Alright, the Allman's finally kicked in. I love this stuff. Any recommendations as to next albums to listen to? Both studio and live.

robo2448 03-13-2006 04:27 PM

Last.fm

1 Bruce Springsteen 30
2 Tea Leaf Green 26
3 The Beatles 17
4 Cream 15
5 Ancient Grease 11
6 A Passing Fancy 9
7 Aerosmith 8
8 Albert King 7
9 Grateful Dead 6
10 Pink Floyd 5

Another big week for the Boss. And Tea Leaf Green really, really owns. Everyone in here should check them out. I think they might be my favorite modern jamband. Yeah I just discovered them last week, but I've downloaded a bunch of their shows off archive and saw them live. Awesome stuff.

Bus, get At Filmore East next and then Brothers and Sisters. Hitttin' the Note is very good too. And get a bunch of live bootleg stuff.

It's about god damn time, man. Do you already have At Fillmore East? If not, get that. Really, their first 5 albums are all good (s/t, Idlewild South, Fillmore East, EaP, B&S.)

Also look for An Evening With The Allman Brothers Band: 2nd Set, it has a killer acoustic version of In Memory of Elizabeth Reed.

JonG 03-13-2006 05:42 PM

1. Grateful Dead 309
2. Mississippi John Hurt 12
3. Mitch Hedberg 10
4. Paul McCartney 8
5. Curtis Mayfield 7
6. John Mayer Trio 3
7. Otis Rush 2
7. The Who 2
9. Jimmy Cliff 1
9. New Lost City Ramblers

Dead back on top...

What's new?

MBS 03-13-2006 06:56 PM

1 Neil Young 34
2 Barenaked Ladies 14
3 Five for Fighting 12
3 George Harrison 12
5 Radiohead 9
5 The Who 9
7 Johnny Cash 5
8 Pink Floyd 3
8 Trans-Siberian Orchestra 3
10 Guns N' Roses 2

Attack of the alternative bands! Five For Fighting is pretty cool, I like them, although I only have American Town. Barenaked Ladies: Most of the listens probably came from me listening to their live album, I forgot what it was called.

The majority of my Young probably comes from when I listed to just him on shuffle. I was in a Neil mood. :) I've been digging Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere lately, it's got such a good groove.

JonG 03-13-2006 07:02 PM

Anybody have Hot Buttered Soul by Isaac Hayes?

I'm looking for more funk.

BlackDeathMetalJazz or really ANYTHING else please- 03-13-2006 07:04 PM
How pissed is your Dad with you, Schyma? Unlucky on getting caught though. :-/
Well let's put it this way...when he found out I failed the drug test he gave me this huge lecture about some various things but nothing really new, he ended it by telling me he wants to "cut the arms off your friends" since then he hasn't said a word to me.

I've always thought good of the guitar playing for Ash Ra Tempel but now that give it several good complete listens, I can conclude that Manuel Gottsching is one of the greatest psychedelic guitar players I've heard. A German Hendrix possibly? I can actually settle with that title. If anyone's curious give "Amboss" by Ash Ra Tempel a listen.

JonG 03-13-2006 07:11 PM

I'm pretty sure my dad still smokes TBH.

I've seen his piece, but it could've been someone else's.

I doubt it.

PinkFreud 03-13-2006 07:33 PM

Yeah, in the post he quoted you were still using all lowercase letters. Jesus Christ Plath, check up on the times.

I don't think he stopped using all lowercase that long ago.

This just in: Rubber Soul is my new favorite Beatles album. Who's with me?

Never.

Revolver will always be superior.

There are some songs on Revolver that I skip. I like everything on Rubber Soul. However, the high points on Revolver may be higher than those on Rubber Soul, but the low points are lower.

EDIT: Jac, can you upload the last 5 tracks on Damaged, they were corrupted. Thanks.

If you mean Yellow Submarine, I completely agree.

BludgeonySteve 03-13-2006 09:12 PM

but they all live in a yellow submarine... :(

Eh, you're right. I hate that song too.

I love that song, nothing better than a drug induced fantesy turned into a cheery, uplifting, catchy song.

Scuba_Steve 03-13-2006 09:19 PM

Anyone else here like rolling stones? I never hear any of you guys talk about them. (older stuff, obviously........not new zombie material)

Discuss how awesome it is that my friend learned to play a bunch of Janis Joplin songs from her original guitarist for this play he was in.

I just picked up a bootleg Brian Jones cd that is made up of live covers that he did solo. I haven't heard it yet but I hope its good.

that should be pretty sweet, what kinda songs are on it?

BlackDeathMetalJazz or really ANYTHING else please- 03-13-2006 09:29 PM

The only songs on Rubber Soul that could compete with anything on Revolver are "Norwegian Wood", "Nowhere Man", and obviously "In My Life". Other than that Revolver is almost 100% superior. Hard to compete with a perfect album.

Fuck you guys "Yellow Submarine" is great.

pigonthewing82 03-13-2006 09:32 PM
that should be pretty sweet, what kinda songs are on it?
A couple Chuck Berry covers, like Roll Over Bettoven, and other blues or 60's pop songs. I think he only does one or two Stones songs, but I forgot what they were I don't have the cd with me.

I also picked up Dicks Picks Volume 30 that has the Dead jamming with Bo Diddly, haven't listened to it yet but it looks good.

robo2448 03-13-2006 09:36 PM

I love the Stones. So does Jac. Beggar's Banquet - Exile on Main Street are all amazing albums. Their Satanic Majesties Request and Some Girls are both very good too.

Rubber Soul is special because it's the first Beatles album I got. Revolver's pretty awesome though. And I like Yellow Submarine. So yeah, song-by-song I prefer Revolver, but Rubber Soul has that special significance, so we'll call it even.

You know what song I don't really like:

/prepares to run

Elenor Rigby

/runs

It's actually a good song and I really like the lyrics, but for a while, I got really sick of it. It probably still is my least favorite on Revolver though.

I never really liked the song till I heard a really good live version of it. It was a lot faster and it works really well that way. Ever since I heard that I've had it stuck in my head and that song, like many Beatles songs, once it gets stuck in your head its not coming out.

That's like the best song Paul McCartney ever wrote.

I love Rush. And yea, I can see how the voices might annoy some, but I personally love both the instruments and the vocals.
So what are you saying? It's a good song but you hate it......?

It's not that. I've never hated it, I just wasn't turned on to it until I heard another version of it that opened my mind to it. I like the song now, but I can see where people are coming from who say they dont like it because I used to be one of them. The reason it grew on me is once it got stuck in my head I started taking in the lyrics more and that is really what I think is the best part of the song, the instrumentals grew on me in time.

Krabsworth 03-13-2006 09:54 PM

Meh tryed to get my friend into some new music, but man...

He says Piper At The Gates of Dawn is too Beatle-ish (w.t.f.) to be a good Pink Floyd Album and that Frank Zappa is annoying.

/gives up

Glitterati 03-13-2006 10:11 PM

Abbey Road will probably always be my favorite.

I'm finally listening to the new Neil Young album....When God Made Me is a georgeous song.
So what are you saying? It's a good song but you hate it......?

I never said I hated it. I said it's my least favorite song on Revolver but that doesn't make it bad. I enjoy almost all Beatles songs (everything except Wild Honey Pie), but I find Elenor Rigby to be one of their less enjoyable songs. What I'm saying is that it's not a bad song, but it's weak compared to The Beatles best. I don't see how that's so hard to understand.

Glitterati 03-13-2006 10:23 PM

I really dislike Wild Honey Pie. It's just weird.

Ugh Stones talk. But seriously shut the fuck up about this zombie shit, that has to be one of the only things that can get me (really) worked up.

I cannot stand any early Beatles, "I Want You" or w/e or about half the stuff from the White Album. But I think I've established this already, many times.

Ahhh! All these new avatars are confusing the crap outta me... Trav, Robo, Liam (used to his changing.), Krab and Schyma.

Glitterati 03-13-2006 10:43 PM

I can stand early Beatles stuff, but I prefer their more mature 1966-1970 material.

Jacaranda 03-13-2006 10:44 PM

Ya, I worded that wrong I can stand it. I just have never listened to one of their older albums probably more then two times. They have a few songs here and there but meh... not my style.

I'll see if I can get that Black Flag up before I head to bed, does anyone else need it speak now, because I'm just going to send to JPJ. Don't want to spam up the inboxs.

Krabsworth 03-13-2006 10:46 PM

Jacaranda I always know it is you because of that...um...person in your avatar.

Phallus Dei 03-13-2006 10:51 PM

What now!

And that would be Mick Taylor of the Stones <3.

Uh, okay I have a really odd question but does anyone have Jane's Addiction - Strays? For some odd reason my computer deleted it from my comp and I have it on my iPod still but my CD copy is so scratched so I can't really rip it to my comp. I tried slsk but I got a really shatty quality version that was like a leak from before the album was released. So if anyone could help me I'd be forever greatful.
Oh come on now Jac we know there are many things that get you really worked up. You're an excitable guy. It's hilarious actually.
So today I found Meddle and The Final Cut in the 2 for $30 section, and I also picked up Syd Barrett's self titled album...it was the only one in stock.
I don't think he stopped using all lowercase that long ago.

I'm not sure if I can pick a favorite yet, but I am listening to Rubber Soul a lot more. It's just so good! Which reminds me, Norwegian Wood is very easy and fun to play. (I just learned it).

I'm starting to get into more of the early stuff now that I've watched the Anthology. Before then I never really gave most of those songs a chance, but after hearing them on the movie, I realized they're good too.

Early songs I really like:

A Hard Day's Night
I'll Be Back
I Should've Known Better
Can't Buy Me Love
If I Fell
Eight Days A Week
I Saw Her Standing There
Please Please Me
Love Me Do
Do You Want To Know A Secret
Twist And Shout
It Won't Be Long
All My Loving
Till There Was You
I Wanna Be Your Man

I don't like all the other stuff that's like Chuck Berry covers and 50's rock type stuff. I don't really dig on that.

And while on the subject of early stuff, the entire Help! album is great.
