I've never got sympathetic vibrations ever, but I don't have tom mics though.

holy fuck. cool.

fishbulb 02-20-2008 07:37 PM
fishbulb...how do you not get your other toms to ring when you hit your bass or snare or another tom?

I had my toms mic'd for a while, but i was getting too much ring in the mic's from all the sympathetic vibrations.
I actually noise gate them. I find it works quite well if you get a good one set up.

Panopticon 02-20-2008 07:40 PM

wow...is that an official video?

TimJim 02-20-2008 07:41 PM

this.

bad stuff.
I actually noise gate them. I find it works quite well if you get a good one set up.
hmm thats a good idea...im actually not sure why i didn't think of that.

Seafroggys 02-20-2008 07:52 PM

I don't like using gates :p Give me all the reverberation you need!

Panopticon 02-20-2008 07:57 PM

you wouldn't be saying that if you heard my audio.

Panopticon 02-20-2008 07:59 PM

http://soundclick.com/share?songid=6289712

i muted the parts where i wasn't using toms, or when i was just hitting one tom at a time...

after that, it got tough so i stopped, it's quite obvious where that was.

Chippy569 02-20-2008 08:02 PM
I've never got sympathetic vibrations ever, but I don't have tom mics though.
you do, just not necessarily something obvious like your snare wires are being affected.

Panopticon 02-20-2008 08:04 PM

chippy...how do you suggest i handle the tom problem? noise gates, or something else?

Berk 02-20-2008 08:07 PM

are you talking about the wierd echo?

Chippy569 02-20-2008 08:08 PM
chippy...how do you suggest i handle the tom problem? noise gates, or something else?
not using tom mics.

Panopticon 02-20-2008 08:08 PM

yeah...it's the toms vibrating when i hit something.

Berk 02-20-2008 08:08 PM

tape

Panopticon 02-20-2008 08:11 PM

nothx cuz then they sound like crap...idk i was thinking of getting pins, but i dunno if that would fix anything.

Panopticon 02-20-2008 08:12 PM
not using tom mics.
ok...is there any other way?

Chippy569 02-20-2008 08:13 PM
not using tom mics.
seriously, they're more problems than they're worth.
especially with how many toms you have. there's soooo many phase issues with all those tom mics, i don't even want to think about it.

use your overheads.

Panopticon 02-20-2008 08:18 PM

hmm...money well wasted...

Chippy569 02-20-2008 08:19 PM

i told you not to bother...

Berk 02-20-2008 08:19 PM

try studio rings

omg this guitar d00d added guitar to a drum track i made and it sounds pro tbqh, i'll putfile it in a minute

Panopticon 02-20-2008 08:20 PM
i told you not to bother...
!!!

Chippy569 02-20-2008 08:24 PM

you could try isolating each drum by putting each drum and maybe each cymbal (but at least every drum separate plus the cymbals not on the same stands as the drums) isolated to keep a lot of the direct vibration, that'd help.

ConnectiveTissue 02-20-2008 08:25 PM

I used to get the same problem with snare buzz and resonance etc.

The highest tom seems to be the worst, most of the issue seems to be tuning, I mean they sound good to my ears, but that's just me.

Panopticon 02-20-2008 08:30 PM

thing is, most of the vibrations are coming from the floor toms, which are isolated. I get almost nothing from my rack toms.

TimJim 02-20-2008 08:31 PM

is bored

i'd like more of an actual ending, but that was pretty nice

berk gettin' it

Seafroggys 02-20-2008 10:15 PM

I think tom mics are worth it, you just have to be a good engineer to use them.

I know I would love having them. But since I get such a great sound just with my overheads, I would barely have the faders up on the tom mics anyway.
