Id like to see a Syd Barrett movie
Me too. It would be cool. I'd like to know more about Barrett.

appreciate_it 07-29-2005 04:20 PM

i personally think johnny depp is a great actor. The only thing is, i hope we don't get teenage girls thinking Syd Barrett was anything like Johnny depp, you know.. and then we'll have all the teenage girls running round with Pink t-shirts on.. but im sure that wont happen.... But that would be great, hes a great actor and a good guy.

Purple Floyd 07-29-2005 04:29 PM

That'd be cool I guess...

I just saw Willy Wonka yesterday, and boy is that one phucked up movie. I had to double check I wasn't tripping on acid when I saw some of those oompa loompa songs.

Does anyone have any other Floyd concert besides Pulse, Live in Venice, and The Wall bootleg?

Does anyone ever think that Syd Barret wasn't a lyrical genius, just a nut case?

From Bike:

I know a mouse and he hasn't got a house.
I don't know why I call him Gerald.
He's getting rather old but he's a good mouse.

Dude, I mean, cmon.

Purple Floyd 07-29-2005 05:33 PM

I bought Pompei a while ago. Worth every penny.

Yeah man, when I first heard that song, I was like wtf?

None of his lyrics really make that much sense though.

BludgeonySteve 07-29-2005 05:37 PM

No doubt that Rodger and David were brilliant writers. Just not Syd.

robo2448 07-29-2005 05:40 PM

Bike is a catchy song though, you've got to give him credit for that. His lyrics don't make any sense, but their hilarious to listen to.

I agree, but I'd still love to see Depp in a movie about him. He's such an enigmatic character...

pigonthewing82 07-29-2005 06:24 PM

In my opinion Syd was a great writer, I mean yes a lot of his stuff does not make sense, but his stuff does tend to spark an emotion in you, and it defenetly, or at least for me, gets you thinking creativly. I mean you know exactly how down Syd was feeling when he wrote Jugband Blues or how happy (or high) he was when he wrote Bike. His stuff is suppose to speak to your soul instead of your head. Why I think Gilmour was such a good replacment for Syd is because his guitar riffs and solo's speak to your soul the way Syd's lyrics did.

Purple Floyd 07-29-2005 06:26 PM

Hey your back! How did that whole court thing go, or whatever happened?
Hey your back! How did that whole court thing go, or whatever happened?
Yeah I've been busy, I haven't been home for more then 2 days all summer. Yeah they dropped the charges they said there wasn't enough evidence (as there shouldn't be since I didnt do it) that I destroyed the property in that building, as there shouldn't be since I didn't do it.

Since then I've compleated my Pink Floyd collection by Picking up Delicate Sound of Thunder, whitch is very good, I was supprised to see One of These Days on there.

Oh and this is coming from the guy you loves the lyric "When I drink by myself I perfer to be alone".

Some of his lyrics really weren't meant to be takin seriously. His lyrics are full of imagry, they're catchy, playful, humorous it's like they give the perceptive lens of LSD. Perfect for psychedelic music and I'm sure that was his purpose too.

^See, I told you.

WheepingGuitar39 07-29-2005 11:03 PM

Syd Barrett was weird.
He was a genius in his own way, his lyrics were marvelous like Roger said
and he had this musical talent that was pretty **** weird like David said

They both said that he had this ability to always come up with some words and a melody, he wouldnt have to search for them, they were just "there"

Pink Floyd has done a lot for my influences in the type of music my band and I like to record and write. One of the things I think I like most about them is the variety of songs they put out. One mood, or different sort of writing style after the other... Hehe... Bike was a great song, lol.

Dunno what my favourite Pink Floyd song would be... like too many.

True, I see your point. I still like Barrett's work, I just don't think he was as good as Gilmour or Waters.

If they make a movie about Syd Barrett, I wouldn't mind. If they make a movie about Syd Barrett starring Johnny Depp, I will have to kill something. Namely, Johnny Depp. What a pompous twit.

pigonthewing82 07-30-2005 12:46 PM

I think Syd had a great sense of rytheme. Intersteller Overdrive proves it. I think albums like Atom Heart Mother would be much better with some Syd imput, but I can't really find much of a place for him once they got started on their Dark Side of the Moon or Wall sound. Syd's lyrics may be just nonsense, but I find meaning in a lot of them. The thing about psychidellic rock is your suppose to find what the songs mean to you, not what the artist is trying to say. They write in nonsense so you develop a more abstract connection to the song. Kind of like Salvidar Dali's paintings (I think thats how you spell his name). And a lot of other bands do this too. I mean we don't in fact all live in a Yellow Submarine, but that doesn't mean you can't find meaning in it.

some green guy 07-30-2005 12:55 PM

Pink Floyd rules. One of my favorite bands.

Welcome to the forums.

Pigsonthewing, where have you been? Something about a trial or something? Everything ok?

Anyways, I agree that part of psychadelia is finding your own personal meaning in a song, but I think that Waters was better at making me do that than Barrett. The lyrics from Echoes, or a lot of DSOTM, or from WYWH (the song specifically) don't really have any absolutely set in stone meaning, but I find my own meaning in them. Barrett's lyrics didn't have that same effect on me. You use the example of Yellow Submarine, but that song doesn't really effect me at all in terms of the lyrics.

Yeah the trial went great they dropped the charges because they said they didn't have enough evidence against me (as they shouldn't have). I've just been really busy, I've only been home about 2 or 3 days since the summer began. And yeah I see where your coming from with Waters lyrics. I mean there is nothing like listening to somthing like the Wall or Dark Side of the Moon from begining to end. Just the way all the albums lyrics blend together by the end is amazing. Water's does write very abstractly at times, but his way of writing abstractly is much different from Syd's.

rocker128 07-30-2005 01:43 PM

The wall live and wish you were here, 2 of thier best albums no doubt about it, the wall really made me interested in floyd, as for comfortably numb, come on scissor sisters why the remake??? BOO! Origional is the best no argument.

Wannabe Steve Harris 07-30-2005 02:58 PM
Nice!

I will tell ya'll something about Waters and his lyrics.

For truly haunting incredible lyrics, check out the songs "Two Suns in the Sunset" and "The Final Cut" off the underrated album, The Final Cut. Maybe the album is too meloncholy for the general majority of Floyd fans, and is admittingly musically adventurous, but those two songs are amazing. I happen to love the whole album, and as sick of people are of the conceptual design of most of Floyd's albums, it would be a sin for hardcore Floyd fans to not give that album some love.
The Final Cut is without a doubt one of the most underrated albums of all time, and not just as a PF album. I started worshipping that disc in 1986 and it still remains in my top 10 of all time, with the title track being my favorite.

Its a horrible album that i really cannot stand to listen to. Waters "singing" consitutes little more than rhythmic prose, and musically it just bores me.

I think theres a reason not many people rate it.

Marzcho 07-30-2005 04:42 PM

What if Syd made love with Waters?

Follow The Reaper 07-30-2005 04:42 PM

What if you had a brian?

robo2448 07-30-2005 04:56 PM

I think I'll get The Final Cut eventually. Everyone seems to either feel it's really good and underrated, or a piece of crap. I think I'll give it a chance.

Ironic, isn't it?
