Everyone PLEASE watch this. It makes me proud to be an Australian :D |
P.S. It's funny.
|
If you pause it right on 44seconds you'll see a can of Bundaberg Rum and Cola premix. It's what bogans drink.
|
1. I'm not Australian.
2. I have no idea what a Bogan is. 3. I like corn. |
1) I was being sardonic.
2) A redneck more or less, except instead of hunting they take out loans for expensive shitty cars and beat their wives (as well). 3) That's irrelevant. |
God how I hate Australians.
Every last one of them. No exceptions. |

Every last one of them. No exceptions.
Quoted for truth. Except the part that says "God how I hate Australians. Every last one of them. No exceptions." |
I'm going to be the asshole who advertises his thread in the community thread.
Great news and terrible news. First: I bought that ampeg 8x10 for $250. Sure the tolex is destroyed but the wood underneath is in good condition (for the most part) and more importantly the speakers are flawless. Second: I plugged the amp into it and cranked it but it was still quite quiet, maybe moderate listening volume at best. After messing with some amp settings for a few minutes i smelled a faint burning rubber aroma and sure enough it was coming from the back of the amp. I took it out of the rack case (it is a rack mounted head in a case that i hadn't opened before) and it had a repair slip on it. "****!!" i thought to myself. I opened the amp itself and there was a burn mark on the power section of the board. Looks like 1 capacitor and maybe a resistor or two blew out or something. Basically very little is left of the capacitor and i can't tell if the resistor is even connected to the board or if it even works anymore. tl;dr: Trace Elliot RAH 300 SMX has a broken capacitor and possibly resistor. I could not find a schematic of the board anywhere so i could buy a new capacitor and replace it myself. Anybody know where i could find a schematic? If not, should i try and find an amp repair place? If i can't find one would it be worth it to take it to a generic electronics repair shop? Another thing that is slightly bugging me is that the amp outputs at 8 ohms but the ampeg cabinet is 4 ohms. Since this is a 100% solid state power amp this shouldn't be a problem right? Any info would be great. Thanks Apparently my brother beat me to posting a very similar thing on TalkBass and even provided pictures. Eek, I'd take it into the shop and see what they could do about it. If it had the repair slip on it, find out which repair shop it was and take it back there to have them followup with their warranty work - they obviously didn't fix something correctly.
|
I didn't look too closely at the repair slip, i hope a) it has contact info and b) it was close to me.
I can't find much info on this: The back of the trace elliot says 8 ohm speaker out (two of them of course), is it okay to run a 4 ohm cabinet through one of those? Better yet, could somebody point me in the direction of a page to learn about how amps (solid state and tube) and cabinets work as far as what ohm rating amp is safe with which ohm rating cabs? |
I believe this was in your other thread, but it's fairy simple - match up the resistances (8ohm amp = 8ohm cab), match wattage on the amp to the power handling on the cabinet.
The only thing you'll have to know about resistances is when you're combining cabinets. For example, two 8ohm cabinets connected together (aka "bridging") have the same resistance as one 4ohm cabinet. Physics dictates that, in this fashion, resistance adds reciprically: (1/Total Resistance = 1/R1 + 1/R2) There's a chart of the most common resistances and combinations in your other thread. I can't tell from your description what the power handling and impedance of your cab needs to be. Your story makes it sound like the cab was under powered or your head was trying to run at 4ohms and it isn't 4 ohm stable. Can you take a picture of the back of the head so that I can see what you're looking at? |
SPEAKER OUTPUTS
There are two speaker output jack sockets provided, allowing two speaker cabinets to be connected to the amplifier. The combined impedance of these speaker cabinets must not be less than 4 Ohms. Two 8 Ohm cabinets is the ideal load for these amplifiers. If you are using one 4 Ohm cabinet, then no further speakers can be connected to the amplifier or the combined impedance will fall below 4 Ohms. If this occurs you will just be wasting power in heat generated by the output stage and no more volume will be available than with the single 4 Ohm cabinet.
That says that a single 4 ohm cabinet will run fine although the optimal setup would be two 8 ohm cabinets. |
Is the cap/resistor blown up to the point where any numbering/lettering on it is illegible? You might be able to decode the value based on some other numbers, or even the colour, depending on what shape its in/what kind of cap it is.

Mercy me, I quite like the look of this new Ibanez. Spalted maple, ritzy.

I never used to be a big fan of spalted or burl maple, but it's really growing on me.
|
I'm becoming a fan of Red Mallee. Jon Shuker's building me a bass with some for the top wood. But I've never seen it used on a bass before. Only for like... ornamental bowls, hah. It is pretty great looking though.
|
Got any pics of the wood?

google search: red mallee ;p |
Oooh, these are pretty sexy

Yeah, they're blanks for making pens from. The piece of wood Jon has is pretty much bass shaped. Its like it was meant to be ;p Hoping I can get some of that lighter coloured wood from round the edge onto it as well :)
|
That's pretty cool. It doesn't look like large sizes with nice grains are easy to come by.

Hahaha. Jeremy Clarkson.
|
He's all man, baby.
And I'm off to work. |
PeaCe Out!
|
I was over an hour late for work today. I guess my unblemished record in the last 6 months, and my fantastic performance, saved my ass.
|
An hour? What happened?
|
An hour? What happened?
My alarm didn't go off this morning. I have no clue why. I didn't forget to set it... I just don't know what happened. So I woke up at 9:20 (shift starts at 8:30) to a call from my company saying, "Aren't you supposed to be at work?" I freaked out, luckily was able to get a drive, and got there at 9:45. |
I showed up 29 minutes late to work this morning, but no one really noticed.
|
When I rock up late no one really cares, my managers least of all.
