Inversions are easy as pie.

You have your chord:

1 3 5 7

If you play it normally, it's a Major 7.

If you play it with the second note of the chord first, it's the first inversion.

Third note first, it's the second inversion. Fourth note first, it's the third inversion. And so it carries on, if there are more than 4 notes.
thats also a very simplified way to think about it because off the top of your head youre not going to know that something spelled Eb G Ab C or written as something like Eb6add11 is really Abmaj7

just pointing out you should know what they spell other than just the basic formula

i can understand that, but you could easily say that to the jazz head, or classic rock person that feels theres no need to broaden their horizons

joas 06-28-2006 01:28 PM

also yeh man i h8 atman and krabs with a pashun

and the problem with that kurrpt is normally people branch out into jazz/fusion styles after dealing with rock/metal/punk/blahblahblah

i honestly hope you didnt recall all that information from the top of your head.

Why?

because i would hate you out of jealousy, thats why

The thing is, the jazz heads and classick rockers on average have much more broadened musical tastes then metal heads :x

agreed. I have absolutely no qualms with that what so ever. I found myself getting into jazz for the complexity of it. Its not like id go out and buy jazz albums, but i can respect it for what it is

joas 06-28-2006 01:31 PM

nah, i would have normally figured it out but knowing your chord subs makes it real quick to figure out because then you know what extensions youre adding and then just subtract the shi thats already gone

but yeah for Ab i know it pretty well so pretty much got it

i find that utterly impossible to believe. I dont think anyone initially gravitates towards METAL music. For me, it was a progression FROM blues/classic rock/grunge. Im no "metal head", but i just see your rationale as a generalization, which leads me to believe you are the subject of your own criticism

I see where you're coming from, any form of close-mindedness os pretty damn ****ty anyway, but I just have a thing against metalheads.

not the music, just the people.

it's true though

close minded metal heads usually end up being the most annoying (and least knowledgeable) out of all the genre exclusivists

look at this forum or the r&m forum if you want evidence

kurrpt 06-28-2006 01:36 PM

i cant say ive ever met any of these "types" in real life. Maybe its just a phenomena that occurs on the internets

maybe i choose not to see it, I'm not sure. I can understand why it may seem like the forums are over ran with that sort of mentality, but come on. They have to be exposed to music outside that small realm they call "metal". Its not like they came out of their mom's vag, holding a megadeath album in their hands.

eggo : Maybe it's because i see no reason to go out anymore, and im only exposed to a small microcosm of people on a regular basis. The yuppies around here are into top 100 style rock and rap/r&b. Metal hasn't seem to even touch these parts

Truth.

I have unfortunatly met people like this, and yeah, they're complete wankers.

well here is how you break it down (or how a great guy in town has for me and i like the thinking)

music is V and I

V consists, in Ab, of Bbm7 DbM7 Eb7 and Gm7b5

I consists of AbM7, Cm7, Fm7

the reason this is mainly is due to the tritone interval in the V chord blah blah blah, on that rational, Eb7 is spelled Eb G Bb Db

subs are Bbm7 (Bb Db F Ab - Eb7 (no root but thats ok because thats the bass' job) with the 11th, Ab, and 9th, F, in it-- you can easily change it to Bbm6 (Bb Db F G) to get the tritone sound and keep the ninth extension

that is one example, but to keep myself from blah, DbM7 has C which is the 6th or 13th as an extension of Eb7, and Gm7b5 has F or the 9th

for I its similar, just Cm7 adds the 2nd/9th and Fm7 adds the 6th/13th

if youre going on inversions, you could use 5 of Ab (Eb again from above) but wouldnt want to include the 7th of Eb because then it sounds like Eb11 instead of the "home base" chord

blahblahblahblahblahblah tension release tension release

kurrpt 06-28-2006 01:43 PM

to the people that have met these metal-head wankers....

do you think these people are born arse-holes, and naturally gravitated towards metal, making them metal-head wankers, or do you think its a learned ability from being exposed to other metal-head wankers?

evilnomore 06-28-2006 01:44 PM

Elton John pointed at me aswell.

if there is any exception to their closemindedness it is merely superficial and irrelevant

like the kid who says he plays a little bit of jazzy blues along with slayer and cob

lmoa i lobe that shi man i know exactly what you mean

its like half this forum probably

Nick 06-28-2006 01:47 PM

sup guys

wow an intelligent discussion in this thread

ok joas I got to the subs bit then got lost

I can handle the V and I bit as I had that bit explained basically as chords that contain the 4 and ones that don't

could you expand more on the substitution bit

evilnomore 06-28-2006 01:49 PM

Me and my friend were a couple feet away from Elton John at one point aswell.

kurrpt 06-28-2006 01:50 PM

i learned one CoB song if that counts

i only listen to about 5 "metal" bands. I find the rest bland and un-inspiring

it kills me every time i see or hear it

personally i'd rather have them be honest

it might not be something i can respect, but at least it isn't as yellow bellied
Elton John pointed at me aswell.
should have asked the man for a back stage pass :naughty:

Speaking of backstage passes, when i saw Symphony X, and got them to sign my CD booklet, apparently they were all staring at my girl. I guess when you go to a show called GIGANTOUR, and see a bunch of nasty guys in all black, a fair dame looks pretty appealing...

anywho, my girl was trying to say that she could go back stage. She wanted me to bet her 100 bucks that she could allow her to go back stage. I was like "wait.... i give you 100 bucks, and you go back stage? Does that mean i can come too?" She explained to me the impossibility of the situation. I told her there was nothing in it for me
