You couldnt really call Floyd prog
I could |
I've never really been into Tool, but with all the great things I hear about them, I might just have to check them out again.
If you like metal, you should check them out. I consider Lateralus to be their magnum opus (unless their new album is even better...), not sure if you should start with that album though. |
Imagine my friend: she thinks Brain Damage is called Dark Side of the Moon. Same with my brother. They make me mad.
I'm one of two people I know that listens to Pink Floyd, and the other guy started because of me, so about three months ago I knew absolutely nothing about them. I decided just to download some songs, and I downloaded 'Brain Damage' except it was called 'Dark Side of the Moon' on Limewire. You know you're a dumbass when you have the song on your computer and you don't know its real name  |
You couldnt really call Floyd prog
Then what would you call it? |

Go out and buy the CD. |
I've listened to Pink Floyd for over 16 years. Absolutely love them. I have all their records. I think the most insane song they've written has to be a toss up between ''Several species of small furry animals gathered together in a cave and grooving with a pict'' and ''Alans Psychadelic Breakfast''
You couldnt really call Floyd prog
Floyd brought prog rock to an new untouched level. and to Flynn...i never really heard of them songs, though they sound odd, but do you own all the albums including live and the other stuff, or studio. |
You couldnt really call Floyd prog
PF is Prog, but you could also call the Space-rock (this term was orginally created to desciribe there early work)/Psychedlic/Prog/Art Rock |
I think they are Art Rock.
|
The genre doesn't mean anything. Listen to Yes, which is considered prog rock, and it sounds nothing like floyd. Music is music.
|
''Several species of small furry animals gathered together in a cave and grooving with a pict''
That is a great song, very weird, but cool. Cool avatar too. |
I think they are Art Rock.
Art rock is just another word for progressive rock, really... |
Sub genres are good for when your trying to be as specific when talking about a band as possible for like when you want to get techencal, but when it comes down to it, rock is rock. Does it really matter if Pink Floyd was Prog rock, art rock, or any other thing they could be classified as? Does it change their sound if we lable them a certain way?
|
pigonthewing, your right, but let the conversation go - its really all this threads holding on by :)
And art rock isnt a 'true' genre...but gives prog rock a nice definition, especially for floyd. Then again, almost all music is a form of art - an expression of emotion |
Progressive rock is very hard to define though, because it must move, or progress, through diffrent movements. Look at Yes, they are no doubt prog masters, yet they had songs that might not fall under the category of prog, but since they had many others that were progressive, it was still prog rock. I think art rock is more used for prog-style music, that doesn't quite follow or progress like most prog. That's just me though.

Then again, almost all music is a form of art - an expression of emotion
Yeah thats a good point, since thats the case I'll throw my two cents in. I think that art rock is defenetly a sub genre of rock, and many Pink Floyd songs are examples of why its a sub genre. A lot of what Pink Floyd does is art for the sake of art, whitch is what my defenition is of art rock. Examples of this are Careful With That Axe Eugene, a lot of the stuff Syd did, and the more "out there" parts of the Wall. Other art rock bands are bands like the Beatles because of things like Revolution 9, or Jimi Hendrix because of the Star Spangled Banner (pure art in my opinion) |
Talking about art rock yet no mention of King Crimson. I don't know much about them, but I think they like invented art/prog rock.

Progressive Metal
You may have heard of this as “Intelligent Music For Intelligent People”. Whether you agree of disagree, most prog metal is made by intelligent people, although it’s fanbase may vary in IQ. This genre is probably the most often falsely attributed genre. However, it is also very difficult to define “prog”. Basically, the rule-of-thumb is that the music progresses. Riffs are generally used a few times, then discarded, in favour of another melody (except for when a main riff is brought back to keep the song cohesive). Drumming tends to be extremely varied and technical, and the music is played at varying tempos and time signatures. This genre features more keyboard and synth then any other Metal genre. Strange instruments also make appearances here. The vocals span a wide range of styles, however the lyrics almost always tell some kind of story, often being expanded into a concept album. Songs are also invariably around 8 mins and over, and feature several solos by every band member. Technicality of musicianship is a hallmark, but not exclusive to this genre. Please note: A concept album does not a prog band make. Sort similar to Rock. I'm writing the proper definition for prog rock right now, actually. |
Riva, if you got a message from me on msn before i left DONT CLICK IT. Its a virus, and now my msn is bust. Sorry for the spam.

Hahaha... I just caught a nasty virus from it. Haha, well, at least I can rejoice in having caught it. Just close any background programs, then make sure you delete run.exe found in the System32 folder in Windows. |

I did too, had to system restore. :( Oh well, i hope the interview was alright. |
Progressive music can differ greatly. I think of it as people pushing the boundaries of music. Many prog bands dont sound the same, but are the same in the fact that they push the boundaries of music.
I just bought "Is There Anybody Out There? The Wall Live: 1980 - 1981" I love it :D |
Go out and buy the CD.
I did, I had literally NEVER heard one of their songs and had no idea what they sounded like, so I typed Pink Floyd in the box and the first song that came up was Dark Side of the Moon, aka Brain Damage. I wasn't going to buy a CD forma band I literally knew nothing about. BTW, if you go back two pages, you'll see I have bought it along with WYWH, The Wall, and Animals. |
What do you guys think of Mother off of In The Flesh Live? I thought it was an interesting take on the song.

Ill have to check that out when I get home. I think he does a good job with Welcome to the Machine on that album. |
For the whole not calling floyd prog thing, the reason I said they werent is because Ive always thought that they were a genre in thier own. Also their style varied, for instance the meddle album was mainly very bluesy but still had that awesome song echoes. That is an example of variation on the one album.

Yeah I like a lot of the takes the guitarist does on the songs on the album. I always felt the sign of a good guitarist was not only to write good songs, but how they improv on others. And again as for the whole "what genre is Floyd" don't try to find one, because at some point or another they have preformed almost every genre, to lable them a certian genre is like calling the Beatles a pop band. |
