I had a similar problem. Take the string off, and re-string it again, but try to tie it lower on the tuning peg this time so it's pulled down through the nut and towards the neck more. Your string probably isn't secured as securely into the nut as it should be.

Is that an sXe avatar? Way to be, man. :thumb: I'm edge, too, just not in name.

Anyway, do you know how to restring your bass? If not, you should definitely learn how.

Hey gav is your bass fixed yet?

bottlerocket 01-07-2005 02:14 PM

^ *read my user title*

:p

I put in DiMarzio Ultra Jazzes myself. It sounds awesome. Now all I need is a new bridge and I'm all set for tone upgrades. Maybe I'll get some neck inlays or something.

bassist-bmxer 01-07-2005 02:17 PM

oh cool! yeah i'm gonna put some dimarzio's in my jazz, but first i think i might get a maple neck.

bottlerocket 01-07-2005 02:18 PM

^ I prefer rosewood for the warmer tone, but to each his own!

What stlye DiMarzios, Ultra Jazz or standard Jazz?

bassist-bmxer 01-07-2005 02:19 PM

the ultra's.

bottlerocket 01-07-2005 02:21 PM

^ They're a bit more trebly than the standard Jazzes, but still have the growl. Basically, everything is improved, most notably the highs. However, it's still got great growl and thump. I definitely reccomend them.

Thanks for that link Gav, it was a great help in reassuring me. I did in fact know how to restring a bass (I have been restring guitars for 6 years now) but just wanted written reassurance how to string a bass. Thanks!

Yeah I am sXe, some people won't agree but I think it is the only way to be true to yourself, I am happy and each to their own :)

Finally for this post.......a mystery for someone to solve: I pick up my bass, play the A string open like....6 times and it is fine, then after a few twangs (about 7) it starts to vibrate! :S

bottlerocket 01-07-2005 02:29 PM

^ You added force to the string...everytime you pluck, you exert an upward (or downward with a pick, in some instances) force on it. When you keep plucking, the force goes throughout the string and causes it to vibrate, which, in turn, makes frequencies (notes) that are interpreted through the pickups. The 7th "twang" means you're either exerting too much force, and the surplus force is just "squeezed" out in the form of a "twang," you're plucking strangely, or your bass/amp is messed up.

Yeah, I mean, I don't drink or take drugs, but I hate when people run around saying, "I AM EDGE. SMOKING IS SO BAD. RAH RAH RAH." If people want to kick back a beer with their buddies or have a smoke, it's their right and I have no problem with it. I just choose not to do it, seeing as my friend Joey was killed by a drunk driver a few years ago.

Fair do's bro. Final question for ya then I will stop being a n00b: Whenever I have brought a new guitar I have restrung it straight away. Is it wisefor me to restring my new Fender P here? Cos it may have been hanging in the shop for ages. I think I can restring it to at least the standard it is in here. What ya reckon?

Russ.

bottlerocket 01-07-2005 02:36 PM

^ If the strings feel and sound dead, restring them. If they sound OK,then don't bother. If anything, I say just boil the strings it has now. Do you know how to boil strings? It's easy, I'll tell you anyway:

1-Take the strings off your bass.
2-Fill a pot about 3/4 with water.
3-Put your strings into the pot (make sure they're completely submerged).
4-Boil in HIGH for about 7-10 minutes.
5-Let the water simmer and cool down.
6-Once the water is lukewarm, empty out the pan and leave your strings on a towel to dry.
7-Once they've dried (about 15-20 minutes), re-string your bass.

Boiling them cleans the dirt, grime, grease, and sweat they've collected over time.

i need to boil all of my strings , i have so many i have yet to boil and im out of new strings to put on at the moment , im thinking some DR coated strings

brain_damage 01-07-2005 03:02 PM

I once boiled my strings, and one of them broke at the tip, so I wasted an hour that I could have been playing bass, so I stopped boiling my strings and I just buy new ones when they are worn out.

Fernandes Power 01-07-2005 03:03 PM

Ahhhh... Im not happy. In fact, i feel s.hitty

voiceless one 01-07-2005 03:06 PM

yeah boiling is a waste of time, new ones are only like 15 dollars every three months or so

I don't know why I don't either.

Spaceman Spiff 01-07-2005 03:08 PM

i don't even mind the sound of old strings.

Fernandes Power 01-07-2005 03:09 PM
Hey, FP! Why don't you have any stars yet?
I need to be here for 90 days...lame eh?

And to Russ- Its not much i suppose... My friends and family are p.issing me off today as well as the fact that I just saw one of the worst films ever and I have a terrible headache because of it...

Plus I have been neg repped twice (only 16 points, but still) and the f.uckers havent even left a name.

nisakss 01-07-2005 03:10 PM

I have fret buzzing problems, but it's weird....it think it's down to technique. Wheneever I play in the A string in the fifth fret (that'd be a D) with my index finger it's alright, but when I use my pinky finger to press down the string it frets....don't quite know why....it's not a presure issue.....maybe it's down to the area of the finger and how much it presses down....don't really know.

btw...and I don't mean to be rude.....what is a sXe?

jamesr 01-07-2005 03:12 PM
i don't even mind the sound of old strings.
I agree, plus a lot of bass players never change them.
