Taxi Driver is great, and I think it's a testament to Martin Scorcese that he can make a movie like that and have it still not be one of his three best.

robo2448 03-07-2006 07:29 PM

Pigpen definitely had the most bluesy voice. I think Pigpen, Jerry, and Weir are all solid singers but none of them are amazing or anything. Just solid and fit the band well.

I like Stevie Wonder.

Glitterati 03-07-2006 07:29 PM
How many people here like Stevie Wonder?
*raises hand*

I love him. He can be politically active while still being very upbeat and catchy.

I sent out Songs In The Key Of Life a while ago.

JonG 03-07-2006 07:30 PM

I have Songs in the Key of Life. It's great.

Illmatic 03-07-2006 07:32 PM

I know someone who says he likes Stevie Wonder yet says he hasn't heard "Superstition".

Tell me if that makes sense.

PinkFreud 03-07-2006 07:40 PM
Taxi Driver is great, and I think it's a testament to Martin Scorcese that he can make a movie like that and have it still not be one of his three best.
You don't think it's in his top 3? What would you choices be?

I'd say Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, and either Mean Streets or Goodfellas.

I'm neutral on Stevie Wonder. I must be the only one here. I can see why other people love him but he doesn't strike me right.

robo2448 03-07-2006 07:42 PM

Scorsese:

1. No Direction Home
2. Goodfellas
3. Raging Bull

Songs in the Key of Life is good stuff. Stevie's got a great soulful voice. I like his often idealist lyrics too.

MBS 03-07-2006 07:42 PM

Songs in the Key of Life is such a cool album, it's got a great groove to it.

jpj 03-07-2006 07:42 PM

I only have Songs In the Key of Life, but I really like it. I've been meaning to pick up Innervisions for like 6 months now.

Badmoon 03-07-2006 07:48 PM

1. Goodfellas
2. Taxi Driver
3. The King of Comedy
4. Gangs of New York
5. Mean Streets

PinkFreud 03-07-2006 07:54 PM

The lack of Raging Bull on your list is disconcerting. And do you really think Goodfellas is his best? I love the movie, it's great, I don't think it's his best.

jpj 03-07-2006 07:56 PM

Raging Bull
Gangs of New York
Goodfellas
The Last Waltz
Mean Streets

I have yet see The King of Comedy, but I really want to. It's on my Netflix queue somewhere.

Illmatic 03-07-2006 07:59 PM
You don't think it's in his top 3? What would you choices be?
1. GoodFellas
2. Raging Bull
3. The King of Comedy
4. The Last Temptation of Christ

3 and 4 always flip-flop, it depends on what mood I'm in
The lack of Raging Bull on your list is disconcerting. And do you really think Goodfellas is his best? I love the movie, it's great, I don't think it's his best.
I'm more bothered by the listing of Gangs of New York.

BigTrav415 03-07-2006 08:00 PM

Well guys, I just got back from the CD store. I could only scrounge up $20, so I ended up buying Gov't Mule - Live With A Little Help. Kind of an impulse, but I have high hopes. It's importing to my computer now.

So, Led-ZeppelinIV, you think you are hXc downloading every episode, eh? I bought them. With my own hard earned American freedom dollars. 150 of them to be exact.

I think we can see who's the true fan.

The whole episode with the Ministry of Silly Walks is hilarious, it's a great example of Python's stream-of-conscience episode editing/creating. All the sketches flow together so well  The Spanish Inquisition one is also like that. The courtroom charades bit at the end was delicious.

It doesnt, that's the problem.

My dad has some of his stuff, both on vinyl and CD. It's great, but I havent heard it in a long time....

Goodfellas is my favorite too. I was dissapointed with Gangs :-/

Superstition was the song that got me into Stevie. I heard it one the radio one day about a year ago, then got SITKOL.

np: Hank Williams III - Cocaine Blues
I'm more bothered by the listing of Gangs of New York.
Yeah I actually agree that Gangs of New York is a little overrated. Still a great movie, but not one of my favorites from Scorsese. I need to see more of his movies though.

BigTrav, that sounds pretty good. Gov't Mule is awesome, but I only have the Deep End Vol. 1. Tell me your impressions of With a Little Help. They're an awesome live band from the songs I've heard off Nugs. Plus they cover Cream a lot which makes them automatically cool. They sound a lot like Cream too. The same hard blues-rock feel. And great chemistry in their jams.

Illmatic 03-07-2006 08:04 PM
Goodfellas is my favorite too. I was dissapointed with Gangs :-/
I come back to it every time. 1989 and 1990, my two favorite movies (Do the Right Thing and Goodfellas) came out in back to back years and both got robbed of Best Picture
Superstition was the song that got me into Stevie. I heard it one the radio one day about a year ago, then got SITKOL.
Which is pretty funny because Songs doesn't even have Superstition on it...

Eh. Gangs wasn't a bad movie in any sense. Sure, DiCaprio and Diaz hurt the acting a bit but goddamn, Daniel Day Louis redeemed them. What an amazing job he did. The visuals were excellent as well. I enjoyed it, I just wouldn't rank it among his best.

I'm also partial to Casino. If my list were expanded to 5, it'd probably be on there.

Edit: Looks like I'm alone with the Raging Bull and Taxi Driver love.

At least we can all agree that it's horrible that he hasn't won best director yet. Absurd. He should have won fo Taxi Driver and Raging Bull. But no. Whatever.

magicbus 03-07-2006 11:04 PM

1. Taxi Driver
2. Goodfellas
3. The Last Waltz

Haven't seen Raging Bull yet, wasn't too keen on Mean Streets. I did like Casino, but not as much as Goodfellas.
*going to see Buddy Guy*
Have fun, I saw him last summer and it was awesome.

Which reminds me, I'm seeing B.B. King next week

NP: RHCP - Scar Tissue

thickasabrick 03-07-2006 11:11 PM

I thought Gangs of New York was a pretty cool movie.

I wish I could see B.B. King. I passed up the chance to see him and I think I might regret it for the rest of my life.

PinkFreud 03-07-2006 11:36 PM

I know Goodfellas is based off of a true story/book but I still thought the end dragged a bit too much. The whole decline of the character when he starts running drugs and guns. It bogs the movie down. I still like it but thats the one flaw i can find in it.

Remember that time I ****-blocked myself that one time? Same girl tonight, except this time it was on purpose. She just called me and told me to come to her room because it would be "worth it." I said I was going to bed. In my defense, I haven't slept in two days and I'm on aderrall. Let's just say that aderrall has this *little* effect on my body...tonight was the absolute worst time this could have happened. Maybe some other time...

Yea the end part does tend to drag on a little, but I usually don't mind so much.

You mean aderrall shrinks your....

Yeah, I can usually ignore it but I think it takes a bit away from the film as a whole.

And yes. It has that effect on me. And my roomate apparently has the same problem. So it's not just me!

Edit: She's also raucously drunk. I'd like to think that I have morals and I wouldn't take advantage of a drunk girl...but mostly it's the aderrall.

I did forget about Casino and Raging Bull, which both deserve places in my top 5. I also forgot about The Aviator, which easily beats out Mean Streets But, I do think Goodfellas is his best and most others do to (including Roger Ebert I believe). As for the end, I feel it fits and flows just as easily as the rest of the money. And I actually think the end of Raging Bull drags on.

As for Gangs of New York, there are some low points, like Cameron Diaz, but Daniel Day Lewis performs some of the best acting in any Scorsese movie, easily. His performance was amazing.

I still haven't seen The Aviator. Worth it, you say? And I can see where you're coming from with Raging Bull. Different strokes I guess.

Totally agree with Gangs Of New York though. Great set design and costumes too. Diaz just didn't seem genuine enough.

I really like Cactus. Cool boogie-rock with great drums and bass. The guitarist is actually really good too. The only weak point is that they start the sound the same a little bit.
Do the Right Thing
I really enjoyed that movie, but Radio Raheem has to be one of the most annoying characters in film history. And even though I don't think it was Spike Lee's intention, I still think Sal was kinda villainized in a way.

Krabsworth 03-08-2006 06:33 PM

Meh I need some more Frank Zappa.

Anyone have Absolutely Free and Jazz From Hell?

what!

I loved Radio Raheem.

I don't think Sal was villainized. He was agreeable and likable (mostly) for most of the movie. I think Pino was the only character who was depicted as a bad guy.

magicbus 03-08-2006 07:19 PM

I still want to see Do The Right Thing.

So I listened to my dad's copy of the new Derek Trucks album, and it's really sweet. I hope he goes on tour this summer or something.

This also lead me to searching through the rest of his cd's for stuff to listen to, and this is what I pulled out:

Savoy Brown - Looking In
The Best of Ray Charles
Savoy Brown - Shake Down
The John Scofield Band - Uberjam
Buddy Guy - Bring 'Em In
ABB - Eat A Peach
Grateful Dead - Blues For Allah
Marshall Tucker Band - Where We All Belong
Sly & The Family Stone - Greatest Hits
Tom Petty And the Heartbreakers - Greatest Hits
RHCP - Mother's Milk
Derek Trucks Band - Soul Serenade
Derek Trucks Band - Joyful Noise
Derek Trucks Band - Songlines
Eric Clapton - Sessions For Robert J

So I'm going to rip all of them, and listen to the ones that I haven't heard before.

PinkFreud 03-08-2006 07:21 PM

Amazing. You feel like uploading anything? Like, I don't know, those last two on the list...?

magicbus 03-08-2006 07:30 PM

Nice.

Blues For Allah :thumb:

I don't think I'll be going to Gov't Mule :(

robo2448 03-08-2006 07:37 PM

Yeah I have Joyful Noise and Soul Serenade by Trucks. Both are pretty good, but Soul Serenade is a lot better, so it seems like he's still improving.

How do you like Savoy Brown? I got their from Chris and it's awesome.

RHCP- Mother's Milk is a great cd. I was listening to that yesterday. So funky. Have tickets for the RHCP gone on sale yet? I know they have a new album out and are touring and I've heard great things about their live show. I bet tickets went on sale a while ago though and are already sold out.

np: The Beatles- If I Needed Someone

Awesome, thanks.

Robo, RHCP's new album isn't out yet. I don't think tickets have gone on sale yet. I might be wrong. They'll most likely be expensive and I won't spend the money.

Yea my dad said Soul Serenade is better too. I haven't listened to those ones yet though. Same with Savoy Brown.

I know RHCP aren't touring America until August, its all Europe for the first part of the summer, so I doubt tickets are sold out yet.

JonG 03-08-2006 07:47 PM

Joyful Noise has Home In Your Heart. That song is amazing. Excellent jamming song. Don't argue.

:)

Listen to Blues for Allah if you haven't before. It's amazing. I love the drums/percussion in The Music Never Stopped.
I know RHCP aren't touring America until August, its all Europe for the first part of the summer, so I doubt tickets are sold out yet.
Sweet. Somebody in my school said they were playing here in like June so I got worried. Glad to hear they're in Europe first.

And I knew their album hadn't come out yet. Typo. I'll probably buy it shortly after it's released.

The more I think about it, Soul Serenade just completely owns Joyful Noise. I mean Joyful Noise is good, but it just doesn't compare to SS.

np: Ancient Grease- Odd Song

Edit- Yeah Jon that's a good song, but SS is just more consistent.

PinkFreud 03-08-2006 07:50 PM

Soul Serenade has "Drown In My Own Tears" with Gregg Allman on vocals so it obviously wins.
