Those covers are good Mathias. How long have you been playing?

lightningmetal666 10-17-2005 12:15 PM
Yea I watched it last night

I'm learning holy wars rght now
Really!? I was trying to learn that but I took a break to try to learn Pantera's Revolution is my name and AC/DC's beatin' around the bush (I love that song title).

I think he's been playing 9 years. But only seriously for a couple.

call me ditsy but I haven't noticed until now that mathia did a cover of some songs. I'll go back and check them out and voice my opinion on them.

Britton 10-17-2005 12:36 PM

What songs did he cover?

lightningmetal666 10-17-2005 12:49 PM
What songs did he cover?
Holy Wars and Take No Prisoners.

I found that both were good but some noticable (but barely) mistakes were made but as the late Jack Black said "Rock ain't about doing things perfect." The only thing that seemed weird to me was his tone. I don't know if it was the recording software he used but the tone seemed nowhere near as scooped as it should've be for the rhythm, particularly in the part just a little bit past the first verse. There's some nice heavy palm muting that sounds killer and wasn't in mathia's cover. He did the chords right but need to pull some more of the mids out for that killer Megadeth tone.

4.5/5 for mathias.:thumb:

BTW Mathias, Superior job on the leads. I've seen the tabs to some of those bends on holy wars, and I was like "How the F*ck am I gonna pull this off ?"

Nicely done.

Jev 10-17-2005 12:52 PM

and Paranoid. A cover of a cover. It was better than the original I must say.

No, but I'm sure his mixture of hyperactivity and mcdonalds will see to that.

No but I wish I was. I tell ya, I'd be the fattest $100 million lottery winner that I know. I would BUY Marshall (not just the amp but the Company) and ESP.

That would be sweet.

Anyways now that dave's decided to continue with megadeth are there any talks about working on a new album? TSHF was one of his absolute best IMO.

TSHF
:smash:
St. Anger

I think he should take the time for another album while he's still on a roll.

Jev 10-17-2005 01:19 PM

he definately will make another album with them. And tour again :D

yeah, but is it going to be in the next year or two? (the new album)

I'm not a very patient guy. :)

I'm not sure there's no news that I know of but knowing Dave it'll be in the next 2 years.

Themadhatter 10-17-2005 01:38 PM

He's been talking about it in some of his latest posts:

Now that I have made my decision I know I am going to have an extremely busy next few years, at least three to five with Megs if we get a good record contract, and hopefully at least ten with Gigantour. 2006 will have a new band, a new record, Gigantour North America, and possibly Gigantour Oz/Japan, as well as the DVD and CD for Gigantour, and the Megs DVD and CD from tonight, and what seems to be a Gigantour South America at the end of next year, I will be busy, busy, busy.
--
Anyway, I spent the whole day listening to riffs and thinking about how to start the next record, the artwork, song titles, etc. I think my brain is itching and swelling, and this may be a good thing, or maybe not. Two shows to go, and then it is off to demo-ville.

There's more, I just can't find it.
pull some more of the mids out for that killer Megadeth tone.
Dave has a very middy tone man. My tone wasn't that great mainly because of the gear and setup I used. Thanks for the critique though. :)

SKoRioN 10-17-2005 01:55 PM

Hey guys.
I think my music tastes are maturing. I used to bum Metallica etc but recently I've been swinging more towards Megadeth.

Convert meh :)

I've not heard a load and I'm wanting some more to have a listen to. What albums and songs can you recommend for me ?

Cheers :thumb:

MAthiAS 10-17-2005 01:58 PM

Albums... get Rust in Peace first. If you like thrash more, then get Killing is my Business next, if you don't, then Countdown to Extinction.

Should probably get Peace Sells too, even though I think its really overrated.

Songs:
Take No Prisoners
Tornado of Souls
Skull Beneath the Skin
Rattlehead
The Conjuring
Into the Lungs of Hell
In My Darkest Hour
High Speed Dirt
Victory
She-Wolf

Jev 10-17-2005 02:06 PM

I reccomend so far so good so what as your third album after RIP and KIMB.

Chu 10-17-2005 09:53 PM

Should probably just get the entire Discography to be honest...

Mark. A 10-17-2005 09:57 PM

I'm in Web Design atm ha. I hate Dave's tone, his mids are turned up too much.

Jackson_Guitarist 10-17-2005 10:09 PM

First album I'd get is Greatest Hits

Britton 10-17-2005 10:20 PM
he definately will make another album with them. And tour again :D
God I hope so. Everyone else I've missed...Except Metallica

Jackson_Guitarist 10-17-2005 10:28 PM

I think there's gonna be a Giangantour 2.

Britton 10-17-2005 10:29 PM

Their should be. I heard they were great..and looking at the bill I can see why

Jev 10-18-2005 11:09 AM

Really? From the sound of it, it sounded quite scooped. Maybe he's just awesome at palm muting then.

I can get an awesome thrash tone at this eq (bass=10, mid=3, treble=6) on my line 6 spider II and it sound incredibly killer.

What gear did you have? I'm not trying to be picky about your playing because it was awesome, but trying to figure out what went wrong with the tone.

I can't imagine getting any distorted tone out of my Spider II that I would classify as 'killer'.

Schecter C-1 Classic --> DS-1 --> Roland Cube 15 --Line out--> crap sound card

Settings:
Bridge pickup (JB)

DS-1:
Dist - 0
Tone - 12 o clock
Level - Max

Cube:
Metal Stack
Bass - 11 o clock
Mids - 2 o clock
Treble - 2 o clock

Something like that, I think.

Hate Dave's tone!? I know it's an opinion and all but jeez...

MAthiAS 10-18-2005 01:35 PM

I think middy tones are great... I hate the overscooped tone. Fuck Dimebag for popularizing it.

Jev 10-18-2005 01:37 PM

My dad says he hates dave's solos, how he jams notes together, he thinks he can't play properly :-/

clairvoyant 10-18-2005 08:07 PM

I was able to get a perfect Youthanasia tone on my 5150 something like:

Bass: 7.5
Mids: 3
Treb: 5.5
Res: 7
Presence: 1

For Rust In Peace I'd definitely say high mids though.

Britton 10-18-2005 08:46 PM

I'm guessing you're dad is a really good guitar player

Arise II 10-19-2005 02:59 AM

Don't really care much for Dave's tone either, it sounds very thin to me. And the whole scooped out á la Dimebag - he didn't popularize it, 80's shredders did. There are supposedly tons of stories about how aspiring young Yngwie wannabes have dialed in their tone a t a club or something, only to be completely drowned out by the chatter from the crowd cuz they had scooped out the mids way too much

That being said, I'm still amazed at how he managed to have that tone and still not annoy the living sh*t outta me. Hmmm, musta been those arse-kicking solos...

Kirk's Puppet 10-19-2005 05:02 AM

I don't like Dave's tone too. I love Megadeth's lead tone though, especially those on Rude Awakening.

metalmilitia101 10-19-2005 07:53 AM

i adore dave's tones when he solos, but i don't usually like the tone he uses when he plays riffs. i think, like arise, that it is very 'thin', and kind of weak and hollow sounding. really, i listen to megadeth for the solos, although i love their songs too - thats the focal point. who doesn't? :thumb:

Thanks, now I can play like Dave :D

lightningmetal666 10-19-2005 12:50 PM

Now that I've bought a zip disk I can save music that ppl send me.

With that in mind I was wondering if you guys could hook me up with some serious amounts of Megadeth. The only albums I own are RIP and TSHF. I've listened to stuff off of CTE and PSBWB, but I want to hear more.

Any help would be appreciated. my email is lightningmetal666@yahoo.com

thanx.

Britton 10-19-2005 01:09 PM

Well I don't have alot but I'm willing to trade.

brittonmadcap@yahoo.com

lightningmetal666 10-19-2005 01:12 PM

Alright then I'll send you TSHF. Tell me if you don't think this album is awesome.
