I actually like the idea of starting the thread off with a joke or inside joke among us regs. But I doubt everyone in here has the balls to do that.

Opening joke:
Scholars have debated for centuries over the definition but have remained clueless. Until now. They've recently determined that classic rock is not a genre, but consists of just one band, the gods formerly known as AC/DC.

Definition of classic rock:

Okay, all joking aside, classic rock is impossible to define and if you ask each reg to name a starting point, everyone will have a different answer. Most feel that classic rock started with The Beatles. Others will say that early in their career the Beatles were poppy wusses and that The Stones invented the classic rock attitude (Jacaphallus). Or maybe classic rock didn't start until 4 British boys who smashed their instruments on a tv show (Lunch). Or possibly with the greatest bad[COLOR="Black"]***[/COLOR] ever, Bob Dylan (me). Regardless of who invented classic rock, most people agree that Elvis is the forefather because he mixed African-American blues and white country music and added his own hip shaking swagger. And thus '50s rock and roll was born with guys like Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ritchie Valens, the Big Bopper, Carl Perkins and more. I don't believe that this was classic rock, but this early rock and roll certainly influenced the first wave of classic rock heavily.

First Wave:

Now the first wave of classic rock really arrived in the mid sixties when The Beatles listened to Bob Dylan and started abusing certain substances. The impact of this was incalcuable. People followed The Beatles footsteps and started to question traditional rules of society. What if I start smoking pot? What if I write about inappropriate topics in my songs? What if my song is twice as long as the conventional single? What if I just don't give a crap about having hit singles and focus on making solid albums? In short, the mid sixties saw a revolution in thinking. People became open-minded. New musical territories were explored. In 1965, Bob Dylan released Like A Rolling Stone as a single. Nobody had released a single like that before. Just listening to the song, you can tell that a new generation was emerging and things would be different. At over 6 minutes long, it was 2-3 times longer than the average radio hit. And the overall sound was just revolutionary. The sneering singing, the pumping organs, the electric guitars. Just revolutionary. And the rest of Dylan's classic album, [I]Highway 61 Revisited[/I] was just as strong as the single. Nobody made albums with depth like that. People came up with a catchy single, and released it on an album along with a bunch of filler. But Dylan rewrote the rules and The Beatles followed. And then everyone started following The Beatles.

Okay, I have to go to dinner, so I'm just going to post what I've written so far. It's not complete but it's a start. Tell me if you like the outline of it and start thinking of some essential artists and albums. On essential albums, I think there should be a rule, no more than one album per artist. I know that is amazingly hard, but it's an essential list, not an "albums I like" list. And don't pick your favorite albums. Just albums that are essential.

Since I enjoy on-topic conversation apparently more than others (<_<) (>_>) let's talk about some great moments you've had with your music, shall we? Something great happened with me last night as I walked home half intoxicated listening to Bob Dylan on a pitch black road leading into darkness. "Mr. Tambourine Man" came on with the gentle guitar coming in then I felt a huge shiver go up and down my spine then the vocals and lyrics took over and for those four long great minutes I had the most beautiful and spirtual conection with music that I've ever felt. It was so incredible, I completly forgot about everything I had just went through, the dark lonely road, my friends, the cops, the fact that I hadn't eaten something in 24 hours, just everything. Looking up I lost myself in the orange haze of pollution that covered the mid-night's moon. I felt almost like I could actualy be a part of it like a stray puzzle piece, like I could waunder through the vast blackness of space touching all the millions and billions of stars in between. I get the feeling like I'm starting to talk like Jack Kerouac here but I truely felt something amazing walking up that road. I don't believe in a god or anything of that sort but there was something about Dylan's words that sent me flying off to another place. (and where ever that place was it was sure better than my reality at the time) This was better than the time I was laying down on my roof-top, tripping, looking at a full moon, with Sigur Ros playing or the first time I tripped while I listening to "The Gnome". Once my dad and I were going down this road in the middle of the woods, not talking at all. He was speeding like hell and that wierd interlude in Don't Fear the Reaper came on. For some reason that freaked the **** out of me and I just sat there thinking I was going to die or something.

Conversely, there was this time we were driving to a Pearl Jam concert in the middle of this huge desert. We were listening to some softer Pearl Jam and I was just looking out at the beautiful landscape. It was awesome.

So James Jamerson is probably the best bassist ever.

He could definitely make a good claim for it. I'd say it's between him, Larry Graham, and John Entwistle.

Edit: In terms of "Greatest" and not best as in technical best.

I think that's a pretty good list. Lots of bands but not overly detailed. I put (?) next to debatle choices.

I'd question Spirit, PBBB, QMS, and Nick Drake. But that's just me.

Essential for me would be Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin, Who, Dead and Pink Floyd. Those are essential, everything else isn't. I mean if we make a list like that why don't we just call it the "Every Classic Rock Artist."

I was looking back at the old CR Poll the Stones got shafted big time, ousted in the second round, then in the wild card.

SRV's out. I'm not a big fan of Stevie either, but he seems pretty essential. But more essential to blues than classic rock. Same thing with PBBB I guess. Love, Spirit, QMS, Booker T, and I think I'll take the Byrds out too. I'm not sure about Nick Drake. He only had 3 albums, but it's pretty awesome stuff. But awesome doesn't make it essential so I guess he's out too. Traffic is definitely staying. Don't try that on me.

What do you guys think about Yes being on that list? Personally, I think they should probably stay but I realize quite a few of you dislike them. And what about Marley? I don't think he can be considered "classic rock" so I might delete him too. I'm also the only Roy fan so I might delete him if anyone opposes to him being on the list.
