Thanks. I must add that Tool is my favorite band. I can't wait for their new cd :D

Moses 04-18-2005 07:22 AM
I agree...But I think justin helped bring the band to a new level. IMO, the foundation of Tool songs are the bass guitar and drums, and Danney said he had to basically develop a new style when Justin came along. I like Paul's playing for sure, but I don't regret that he left when he did. Enima would have never sounded the same without justin, although there are still some paul influences there.
The reason that Aenima has a few Paul influences is because he wrote some stuff on that album before he left.

I think Paul really would have helped them live in the early days. The pounding bass would have gotten people started, and after the show it would have left a lasting impression on the crowd.

The JoZ 04-18-2005 07:36 AM

You know, I'd just like to point out, nowhere in anything I've said have I been bashing Paul at all.

Paul was a good bassist, and he created some good, slightly unusual basslines at times...including one of the most recognizable riffs ever in "Sober".

But I really think Justin has brought alot more to the table in terms of his abilities and basslines. This doesn't mean Paul didn't make any contributions while he was there, but...I mean, you can compare them side-by-side, and I think one will see Justin is the better bassist...or, if nothing else, at least more experimental.

fatbandit 04-18-2005 07:40 AM

Okay, I don't know how much this has been asked (and answered), so please don't greet me with a 'go away, n00b, its been done before', but whatever happened with the whole Maynard finding God thing? I was suspicious to say the least, especially knowing Tool's penchant for being strange and messing with the fans, though with its close proximity to April Fool's day, and with something similar happening with Head in Korn, I wasn't certain. So I ask. What came of it? Was it true? I never really followed it up. Or is it another one of those 'Bob Rock left Metallica' stories?

Cheers!

jamesclelland 04-18-2005 08:57 AM

i cant believe people actually believed maynard found god. that was the most rediculus thing i have ever heard. have you guys ever read the lyrics to these songs? they clearly show him as a pagan(almost).

if anyone is interested, i can put a couple of songs from the tool cover show up, just from my set though. let me know which you want but be patient, i havent got the video back yet. we did: intolerance, fortysix and two, swamp song, cold and ugly, stinkfist, and sober. sorry to bring it up again, but it was the most fun i've ever had (playing that show)

fatbandit 04-18-2005 09:05 AM

Psh, I take it he didn't become a Christian then?

That's all good then.

The JoZ 04-18-2005 09:34 AM

Alright, here's a question to those who wanted Tool bass tracks from me.

Do you want drums with it too, or just bass? I can upload MIDI drum tracks with my bass playing if you'd like.

Drums if possible and it wont take too much trouble

(sorry if I dont have a say)

The JoZ 04-18-2005 10:13 AM

No, it would take literally zero effort to do drums.

I'll do a couple of tracks here in a minute...

clearvision 04-18-2005 10:18 AM

It doesn't look like ken will show so drums are needed, top man JoZ!!!

siva_chair 04-18-2005 10:34 AM

Time to start spam linking R&M. If we post enoguh ban worthy material in a breadcrumb style, he might give some input on such a deal.

That, and band the thread.

clearvision 04-18-2005 11:24 AM

You can do it, I'll just watch :p

The JoZ 04-18-2005 11:25 AM

Please bear in mind, these are MIDI drum tracks...I'm not really doing drums...I'm not Danny,

But you'll at least have a rhythm behind the bass.

siva_chair 04-18-2005 11:27 AM

Ok, I have a few questions I am hoping you great folks from the Tool thread can help me with:

1) Does anyone know how Adam records his tone in the studio? Does he mic his live setup or what?

2) How accurate are the tabs on Tooltabs?

3) Does anyone know exactly what Adam's live setup is?

Thanks.

siva_chair 04-18-2005 11:28 AM

If you were, I would have to find you and kidnap you.

clearvision 04-18-2005 11:30 AM

1) Probably line in, I can't see him using a mic...

2) very accurate

3) Adam does :), and maybe his roadie...

Adam Jones is GOD 04-18-2005 11:32 AM

1) He has done both in the past. usually for the more straightforward songs he mics up, but others he plays through some weird recording devices, then chops the sound up (DIe Eier Von Satan being the most notible). However, i can neither confirm nor deny this

2) They sound accurate enough to be like the tool tracks for us lower budget guitarists. But I question some parts for ease of playing/correctness

3) It changes so much, there are only a few consistents.

siva_chair 04-18-2005 11:32 AM
1) Probably line in, I can't see him using a mic...
Kinda what I thought.
2) very accurate
Good to know. :thumb:
3) Adam does :), and maybe his roadie...
Yeah. I know he's got a Diezel amp (and I think a Mesa and a Marshall, right?) and sets them up kinda weird, but I wasn't sure if anyone knew on here.

The JoZ 04-18-2005 11:33 AM

Tooltabs probably have the most accurate tabs, although I question some of them every now and then.

clearvision 04-18-2005 11:38 AM

Adam's set up is immensley big and compicated, he has loads of pedals. We have a link to a site that kinda has loads of pedals they think he uses, search the thread to find it.

I don't think i ahev found an innacurate tab on tool tabs. I question the Aenima solo, and so play it the way i think it sounds. But other than that they are cool.

I don't see the point in mic'ing an amp, with line in you cut out so much noise etc....

Sometimes it just sounds warmer. And some effects Adam genreates I doubt can be picked up with line in. THough not knowing much about recording, I cant really stake a case against anything

They dont have the Enima tabs up right now, but a lot of Lateralus ones are kinda weird. for the Grudge they have

which is of course way wrong.

Legend :)

The JoZ 04-18-2005 11:50 AM

Please understand too, if I miss a note here or there, it's not cause I don't know the song, it's cause I don't have my four string.

Next up: Sober

I'm thinking of Eulogy next...confirm/deny?

clearvision 04-18-2005 12:15 PM

Me an AJIG want the patient :p but yeah, someone wanted eulogy...thanks for this man :thumb: some kind of mod needs to rep you...

The JoZ 04-18-2005 12:17 PM

If two people want The Patient and only one wants Eulogy, I'll do The Patient first

clearvision 04-18-2005 12:18 PM

Heh thanks man :)

What is the rippling sounds i can hear in these tracks, is that your bass, the drums? Do you use a pick when you play? you playing sounds pretty aggressive.

/Not criticism :)

Ken can do it before he lays down his drum tracks.

And im so glad you uploaded that JoZ, i've just played through it a couple of times and it's corrected the time/rythym errors I was making while playing it.

Were you playing the extended version or the album version btw? I seem to have 2 bars less in guitar parts than your recording.

The JoZ 04-18-2005 12:23 PM

Uh, it's the album version far as I know...

The bass does have extra notes at the end...Adam just kind of fades out or something...

Either way, it looks like The Patient is up next.

clearvision 04-18-2005 12:29 PM

Answer my Q's please :)

Yay for the patient...
Answer my Q's please :)

has anyone posted their version of the patient yet....im waiting to post mine, but id like to find the backing track for guitar.

The JoZ 04-18-2005 12:31 PM

I didn't see the questions.

I am a pretty agressive pick player, at least on agressive tracks. That and the fact that I don't have great recording equipment, I guess :p
