I've never been able to understand the claims that Portal is incoherent, when I listen to it I feel like the structure and harmony of individual sections of tracks usually fairly evident if you pay attention. As songs they definitely just kind of keep mutating but is it really that different structurally from what bands like Ulcerate and the Chasm are doing?

Also people who shit on the production are silly, the unsettling sound is as much (or more) a product of the harmony involved as the production value

those videos are actually very good examples of exactly how structured and coherent portal is, so i dunno where you're going with them. beneath the grimeyness the band is very technical and highly structured, and it really doesn't take more than one or two listens to hear it.

it's annoying when people assume I try to hate bands. The bands which most people here like that I don't (Portal, Ulterate, few others) I have listened to full albums multiple times over a period of a time and don't see redeeming qualities in. I want to like them.

you're saying you don't like portal because you can't listen to them w/out laughing. and others are saying that they are incoherent. the gimmicky costumes. robots farting in space, etc.

and rasputin is saying they aren't incoherent just because you can't make out what's going on. assuming that you haven't listened to the album all the way through a couple of times isn't that much of an uncalled for assumption, because i'd imagine initial listens would be too murky/'incoherent' for everyone.

and it just comes down to portal fans saying they are awesome, and others making comments like these (which is fine)

They're just jokes, but at least mine is relevant to the band. I don't have to justify anything in the argument because I'm not really involved in it. I don't actually care that much.

but rasputin is well known for dismissing anyone who doesn't like specific bands and accusing people of not listening to them for more than 2 minutes. not that everyone does, but he sure does a whole lot.

and I was saying that tyler and I probably shouldn't be accused of listening to half a song on youtube for bands we dislike because we do have reputation for enjoying death metal quite a lot and for having a decent knowledge of the genre. we're not out to just make fun of things other people like.
