JonG 09-06-2005 01:56 PM

I like a lot of Stones' songs on "Exile On Main Street" a lot more than there more mainstream songs. My favorite album by them.

<-- Sportin' the new user title.

Illmatic 09-06-2005 02:00 PM

Let It Bleed is still my favorite, but Exile on Main St. is right up there with it.

Lunch 09-06-2005 02:05 PM

I still like Jumpin' Jack Flash.

WelcomeToTheMachine 09-06-2005 02:09 PM

Gimmie Shelter > any other Stones song

angusmaster 09-06-2005 02:10 PM

JonG-Did you ever get the new clapton cd?If you did,is it good?

Edit:My favorite stones song is Paint it Black.

I didn't like it. His voice to me seems very digitally enhanced, and the songs are repetitive.

I like Clapton when he was in Blind Faith, Cream, John Mayall and the Bluesbreakrs, better obviously.

robo2448 09-06-2005 02:23 PM

I heard that the new Clapton cd blows, but the new Stones cd is good. USA today compared it Exile

I can't imagine it being that good, but I'l check it out.

DeusExMachina 09-06-2005 02:46 PM

The Clapton CD with BB King was supposed to be awful too. I didn't bother picking it up.

I don't know what you're all talking about with Stones tracks better than Wild Horses. The only one that compares is You Can't Always Get What You Want, I think.

robo2448 09-06-2005 02:48 PM

I heard Riding With The King was supposed to be really good actually. I've been meaning to get it for a while. I can't possibly choose a favorite Stones song. Wild Horses is great, and You Can't Always Get What You Want is the song that got me into the Stones, but there are so many great ones.

rockinbass17 09-06-2005 03:16 PM

I actually think 19th Nervous Breakdown and Sympathy for the Devil would be my favorites.

DeusExMachina 09-06-2005 03:21 PM

I like Sympathy for the Devil. But, it's not amazing. And the guitar solo is definitely meh. It's alright, fun to listen to, but nothing special.

However, it does get props for being the song that got me into the Rolling Stones.

Jacaranda 09-06-2005 03:31 PM

Gimme Shelter > Wild Horses. C'mon seriously...

thickasabrick 09-06-2005 03:36 PM

Gimme Shelter
You Can't Always Get What You Want
Sympathy for the Devil

I'd say those are my three favourites, although there are like a hundred other songs tied for fourth place.

DeusExMachina 09-06-2005 03:46 PM
Gimme Shelter > Wild Horses. C'mon seriously...
No way. Gimme Shelter is catchy, but I don't see it as being particularly unique. Wild Horses is unique. It's absolutely amazing.

robo2448 09-06-2005 03:50 PM

Wild Horses or Angie? Both similar songs, what do you guys think?

I'm guessing you all like Wild Horses better, I think I probably do too, but Angie might have Jagger's best singing ever.

Jacaranda 09-06-2005 03:51 PM

Unique? I don't listen to songs for uniqueness I listen for the sound and it is very catchy thats probably why I like it the most. The back-up singers are just so amazing sounding; but not to get me wrong I listen to Wild Horses every day in a little like "meditation" its such a peaceful song.

I had She's a Rainbow stuck in my head all day, kinda annoying.

angusmaster 09-06-2005 04:00 PM

Ive never heard wild horses, but i never was a big fan of the stones,i just like a couple songs here and there.

DeusExMachina 09-06-2005 04:06 PM

I prefer Wild Horses to Angie, but Angie is also awesome. And, Beast of Burden is great too.

To Jacaranda, I also listen to songs for enjoyment, I'm not a musical elitist who refuses to listen to something because it's not completely original. However, catchiness lasts only so long. If a song is catchy but that's it, it loses it's appeal after enough listens. Just, overall, I think that Wild Horses is a much more beautiful song.

Illmatic 09-06-2005 04:07 PM
No way. Gimme Shelter is catchy, but I don't see it as being particularly unique. Wild Horses is unique. It's absolutely amazing.
What the hell?

"Wild Horses" is a country/country-rock ballad with a guitar solo thrown in to remind you that you're listening to the Stones. It's a good song, but it's hardly unique.

I don't really like "Angie", either...the only song that I really like off that album (Goat's Head Soup) is "Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)"
I had She's a Rainbow stuck in my head all day, kinda annoying.
I hate that album...a real misstep for the Stones.

thickasabrick 09-06-2005 04:09 PM

My favourite Stones album is actually Their Satanic Majesties Request. It doesn't have their best songs, but it's one of the few albums of theirs that I really love all the songs on. Some of their albums have like their best songs, but then a couple songs I don't really enjoy so it's hard to make a decision.

Illmatic 09-06-2005 04:09 PM

Do we ever agree on anything?

Meh. I guess I'm ignorant of country/country-rock ballads. But not many songs come to mind for me when I think of songs similar to Wild Horses.

thickasabrick 09-06-2005 04:11 PM
Do we ever agree on anything?
I was just thinking that. We agree on some things, I think. Let's just agree to disagree! (god thats a lame term)

edit- and I see nothing unique, different, special etc about Wild Horses. It's just a plain good song. The Stones never did anything really different or groundbreaking from album to album, they just wrote good songs. (AC/DC took that to the extreme)
Do we ever agree on anything?
Most of us like music, so it's very unlikely you'd agree with us about anything.

Joke.

Jacaranda 09-06-2005 04:14 PM

The Stones were unique for their time, as in pushing the limit on censorship. I've already ranted bout that though.

My 2nd favorite Stones song is Happy I love Keiths voice, before he started using herion and drinking and smoking alot and killed it.

I like every Stones album besides Bridges to Babylon.

robo2448 09-06-2005 04:14 PM

I think I'm the only one here who really likes Some Girls. I think it's on par with Exile, Let It Bleed, and Sticky Fingers. It's got more of a concept to it than most Stones albums. Those 4 all get 5/5 from me.

I guess we will have to.

The difference: The Rolling Stones were actually good and interesting.

I've warmed up to Some Girls, but it's definitely not on par with their elite material. It's defintely behind Let It Bleed, Exile, Beggars Banquet, and Sticky Fingers and it ranks along with Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out, Aftermath, and Out Of Our Heads, ahead of most of their other work.

Some a-hole at my gym was playing their new CD and I didn't like it at all. I think their so far past their prime it's time to call it quits. If they could perform the songs on their new CD and have them sound remotely like they do then I'd be surprised.

robo2448 09-06-2005 04:30 PM
Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out,
Is that their best live cd? I have to say that I don't have anything live by the "greatest live band in the world" None of their live cd's really seem to get great reviews so I'm not sure which one to get.

robo2448 09-06-2005 04:36 PM
Don't get the new Rolling Stones CD. I have no idea where the critics are getting this idea that it's any good from, but I can only assume that they're comparing it to their last few releases, all of which have been dreadful. There's two good songs on it, and beyond that, it's the same as their post-1970something releases, i.e inconsistent, and mediocre at best. I'll review it soon for sputnik, probably. Sweet Neo Con is a song that they should be genuinely embarassed about releasing...it makes Billie Joe Armstrong look like a coherent political statesman, and that's never a good thing. My favourite Stones album is probably Exile On Main Street, although my favourite songs are all spread out over quite a lot of albums.
I'll follow your advice. I trust your advice more than USA Today. Besides, the only song I've heard off of it, Oh If Not For You Again (or something like that) was pretty terrible IMO.
