Wasn't it based on a game played by the Chinese in ancient times?
The Chinese may well have played a similar game, but football in Britain developed from battle. Specifically the victors kicking the heads of the losing side around afterwards. That got adapted to a game (in the north at least) to some kind of race, with a ball; a mile race, usually, the winner being the one to kick the ball over the mile mark, or something. That then got further adapted to a kids' game, involving kicking an inflated pig's bladder around and scoring points, much more like actual football.

And it is Wintermute who has that avatar.

What? Canada sucks.

Anyway, I'm interested in reading this Sin City review. I've not even seen it yet and I feel strangely protective of it.

Jom 04-07-2005 08:48 PM

Heh, that's what I was thinking as well. I may* go see it this weekend.

*probably won't get around to it

I'll have it up shortly.
“Sin City” is the best and worst movie I have ever seen.

Stylistically, the movie is nothing short of inspiring. The gritty black-and-white, shadowy city is occasionally accentuated by carefully placed color, which goes beyond just giving noir a fresh new feel — it is an artistic achievement. It is a bold approach to the visual component of storytelling and does an amazing job of making the story seem like one worth telling.

Its content, however, revels in brutal violence, cheap sexuality and glorifies misogyny to almost a science. In short, the movie is just plain sinful. The sacred and the profane aren’t just mixed — in “Sin City,” the sacred is the profane. Never has a more wretched cast of characters assembled — there are no good guys, just some who aren’t quite as bad.

Women are nothing but objects to use, protect or abuse — sometimes all three — in this world. Even the prostitutes, who defend their matriarchal society with an arsenal of Uzis and samurai swords, are incomplete without a male savior.

The movie essentially comprises one story told three different times with different characters. In each, a hard-boiled male protagonist must save a woman from a fate she is utterly powerless, and possibly incompetent, to avoid on her own. Doing so requires acts of such graphic vengeance they would make Hannibal Lecter squeamish and a lot of over-the-top narration that is likely to make the audience squeamish (Although, for the record, I enjoyed those bits immensely).

The amazing quality of “Sin City” is that it manages to subject viewers to severely disgusting and violent visuals and still be extremely entertaining. Despite the emptiness of the plot, soulless characters an overall heavy-handedness, the movie maintains a distinct brand of energy right up to the end. It is like a summer action flick with the flavor of a snuff film. Fans of “Kill Bill” will probably feel right at home.

It is undeniably fun. The acting, cinematography, special effects and action — all of these combine to create a wild ride through an unforgettable, dark fantasy world. Co-director Frank Miller (the author of the graphic novel on which “Sin City” is based) has a definite eye for compelling visuals, and a definite ear for entertaining dialogue.

On the whole, however, the movie is more superficial than “Clueless.” It puts on so much make-up over its decadence that it manages to sell itself as beautiful. The sadness is that after all the spectacle is over, there’s nothing left — no resonance, no point at all. The artistry of the story couldn’t approach the level of the way it was told.

I watched the contents of the world’s most beautiful trash can get dissected for two hours, and I enjoyed every minute. But when all is said and done, I only watched somebody dig through garbage.
Come on now, comparing it to "Clueless" because the author felt it was "superficial?" :-\

All the newspaper people are jackasses. It must be a newspaper reporter vs. DJ thing. But seriously, we just had this big scandal at my uni over the College Republicans, so its coverage has plagued the paper as of late.

In a nutshell, they had an affirmative action bake sale:

Five cents for a Native Americans
Twenty-five cents for African-Americans and Asian-Americans
Fifty cents for women
Two dollars for Caucasians

It was a huge scandal, and for the past four weeks (weekly-run newspaper), the editorial and opinion pages have been littered with a back-and-forth College Democrats vs. College Republicans debate, and it's getting torturous to read the paper nowadays.

I mean, I feel that I already know it's good and worth defending against people who don't see that it is.

That guy strikes me as the sort of person who claimed they saw the end twist of The Usual Suspects coming. He basically said that it was an amazingly well done and hugely entertaining film, but it's not any good..

I think the whole aim of the article was to be as ambiguous as possible. Whatever. All the articles in the paper are horrid anyway.

Can you be entertained by a movie that isn't very good? I hadn't thought of this, but I guess it makes sense.
Real classy...
Yeah, that's what I thought (as well as thousands of others, apparently), and I couldn't care less about Democrats vs. Republicans to begin with, really.

The article today was about how the President, Vice President, and Treasurer of the College Republicans were asked to step down and they did. Pages of coverage

It was Tucci's crazy ***. She assigned an 8-10 page research paper, and gave us about 3 weeks to do it. In her defense, I guess I could've worked on it over Spring Break, but saving it until the last night is much more fun.

In more good news, I just realized the whole thing wasn't double spaced. Now my paper is 9 pages instead of 7!

And today was a good day in Hunter. We talked about Les Miserables.

I'd think there would be people out there who saw it and didn't like it because of the excessive, almost over-the-top violence, in which case they shouldn't have seen it in the first place.

TUCCI! AH HAH HAH HAH HAH HAH. She's fucking nuts, dude. She has like eight chinchillas in her house and thousands of other animals, and those things are pretty awesome.

I painted a room in her house over the summer for her. Lime green. One uglyass color, but it came out rather nice. It was better than the salmon pink she had in there before :-\

I also moved a couch out for her with Mike, so he could take it to uni for his room. Fun times getting that out of her house and into Mike's van

Hunter, even though he was an asshole as a teacher and just a complete dick to everyone, he knew his stuff. Everyone bitches about his tests, but I got A's and B's on all of them.

Yea she's definitely nuts, I have her for 2 classes. I like Hunter, he's not really a dick to us. Maybe because he might be retiring this year.

But seriously, after this paper, I am doing nothing for the rest of the year. In any class. It's complete slackin' off from here on out. :D

BIG Senioritis.

Hahaha, chinchillas. She always tells us about them, and brought a few in this year. Around wintertime, a few of them died off, and she didn't know why. That was kinda weird.

Jom 04-07-2005 09:15 PM

Hahahahah, is Pépe still around? She always brought him in, along with another one whose name I can't remember.

Chelsea would come in to our class and just chill in the back with the chinchillas when she brought them in.

Is Tucci still as scatter-brained as ever?

Well, I guess if you want your dining room painted lime green, then I guess you might be a bit nutso.

EDIT:

I liked Tucci a lot, though, she was one of my favorite teachers. She helped me outside of school with things. I was never one of her "patients" but she gave me a lot of advice about things. Every time I come home I go and visit her, and she always yells at me because I don't have a visitor's pass.

The bake sale.

I got the impression they were selling native americans and african americans and such.

Jom 04-07-2005 09:22 PM

Haha, I remember when I was painting her house, she said she would go and get lunch for me when she went to Home Depot to get some supplies.

"Hi there, I didn't feel like driving to a fast food joint or anything, so I just picked you up some munchies at the register."

1 Big Grab bag of Cooler Ranch Doritos
2 Red Bulls
1 DNL (the upside-down 7UP)

I was bouncing off the walls like crazy, man. I was so loopy.

She did go and get Burger King for me the second day, though, thankfully.
