ok ok, i admit it, i'm a classic rock nut. i love led zeppelin, the beatles, the who, eric clapton, the doors, and so on. most of the bands i listen to broke up years before i was born. at 17, nearly every song on my playlist is older than me. but is it just my imagination, or is classic rock experiencing sort of a revival. i am running into an increasing number of classic rock fans my age. at my school (an all boys high school), the school newspaper took a poll of everyone's favorite genre and band. led zeppeling got 5th and the beatles got 6th, behind that rap crap. classic rock made up a large percent of ppls favorite genre. is this just by me, or are other ppl noticing this too?
This is the thread for general classic rock discussion.
Yeah, I've definitely noticed it, but a lot of kids in my high school are posers and wear the shirts and crap but only do it because everyone else is. Thats one thing I hate. I've liked classic rock well before every other teenager did. |

How do you know that they're only following trends? How is it that only YOU can like classic rock? Did you interview everyone in your school? No offense, but you come off as a bit of an elitist and a jerk. But, if you enjoy the music, welcome to the thread. |

I may have some reason to believe you if you happened to be born 60-70 years ago. However, even if this were true, it is highly unlikely that you heard Classic Rock before any other teeneage did. You would have to be Buddy Holly's close friend for that to happen  PS- sorry for flaming your first post, but it had to be done :p |
I have been spending most of my time on harmonica lately, it's a good use of my trombone-ear skills
I'm playing harmonica right now  I Should Have Known Better is a fun song to play. |
Wow over the last few weeks I've become a Clapton nut. I always loved Cream, but didn't listen to much stuff besides Cream. My addiction started when on a hunch I picked up his live cd fromt he Reptile tour "One More Car, One More Rider." I was blown away by how amazing the already amazing Cream song Badge was done on the cd. I strongly recommend that cd its become one of my favorite live albums. I also got his cd 461 Ocean Boulevard, though the one with the bonus live cd. The next bit of Clapton I think I'm gonna get is a bootleg from his tour with Roger Waters.

I strongly recommend Eric Clapton's Rainbow Concert. I bought it in July, and it's really good. Great line-up, Clapton, Pete Townsend, Ron Wood, Steve Winwood, Rick Grech, Jim Capaldi, Jimmy Karstein, and Rebop. Great guitar playing, a really awesome cd. I also have Slowhand, which is really good, and Unplugged which is great. This is all in addition to Cream which is amazing too. I hate I Shot the Sheriff, so I never bought 461 Ocean Boulevard, but if you recommend it, I may give it a shot. I should get One More Car, One More Rider next. Oh yeah, I also have a great bootleg of him that someone uploaded a while ago. |

I started when I was 10. |
Tangled up in Blue owns so hard.

Quoted for truth. I think that's the only Dylan song that's equal to It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding). |

I wouldn't be too worried about the track listing on 461 Ocean Boulevard, I shot the Sheriff is the only reggee song on there. But if you do end up picking it up I strongly recommend the one that has the bonus live cd (I think its the delux one or somthing like that) the live cd is worth it alone. |
Tangled up in Blue owns so hard.
Tangled Up In Blue is really the song that got me into Dylan. My parents had Dylan's greatest hits cd (only 10 songs) and I loved it when they played it in the car, but then I went like a full year without listening to any Dylan. Then they bought Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. 3, and as soon as I heard Tangled Up In Blue I knew I needed to get into Dylan. I then went out and bought like 10 Dylan cds in the span of 5 months. Speaking of which, I feel like buying another Dylan cd now. |

If I get it I'll definitely get it with the live cd. Now I love Reggae, but Clapton's version of I Shot the Sheriff  It just doesn't appeal to me. I give him credit for introducing Marley to the mainstream though. |
I love the entire Blood On The Tracks album, frankly.
And I've been becoming a bigger Neil Young fan each day. |
I think the live "Back in the US" version of Hey Jude owns the hell out of the regular version.

I should get that cd, I've seen it reasonably priced. Good cd? And I agree that Blood on the Tracks pwns all. |
Wonderful CD, I hope Paul performs like this on his upcoming tour.
The way he interacts with the crowd is amazing. NP: Aqualung - Jethro Tull |

I think I have finally made my list of my Top 10 Favorite Floyd songs of all time. (Out of Meddle, DSotM, WYWH, Animals, and The Wall) I'll say a bit about why after each song.
10) Sheep This is my favorite song off Animals, barely beating Dogs. I think what I like about it is Gilmour's awesome guitar riffs, Wright's great effects and keyboard, and Roger's great bassline and vocals. But easily the best part of it is the epic outro riff by Gilmour. It's just insane... Gilmour will always be my favorite guitarist 9) Fearless Pretty much just a really great song. A beautiful, light guitar tone, an uplifting bridge riff, fun imaginative lyrics by Gilmour, generally just an awesome song. Great to listen to when you're feeling down 8) Astronomy Domine Yeah, it's not on the albums I listed above. I've never actually heard the entirety of PATGOD, just this song. It's just a really groovy, trippy song, with off-center lyrics in Syd's affable English monotone. Just a cool song 7) One of These Days One of the most rocking songs I've ever heard in my life. Starts out with a heavy bass note echoed over and over, then joined by another bass, with some well timed effects, up to the drum-guitar break-in, with some great slide guitar by Gilmour. And a huge rise up to the infamous Mason lyric "One of these days/I'm gonna cut you into little pieces", then bursting into an all-out fast jam, with Gilmour and Wright leading with great playing by both. Just a rockin' song 6) Nobody Home This may seem kind of an oddball pick, but it's definitely one of my favorite songs off The Wall. It's just so simplistic; great bluesy lyrics, great piano, great everything... it's one of the only songs of The Wall that doesn't have a million effects on it, but still stands out in my mind very well. When I used to sit in my bed at night and listen to The Wall, this song would just give me goosebumps from its greatness. Definitely one of the most underappreciated Floyd songs. 5) Echoes This song had grown on me a whole lot. When I first downloaded it, I never really listened to it, and I never did until I bought Meddle. It struck me as a good song, but not one of the best. But as I listened more and more, I really started to appreciate it more. It's a song you just can't describe I guess... it's just... good 4) Wish You Were Here Who doesn't like this song? One thing about music is that often when you hear a song, it reminds you of something... or someone... this song definitely reminds me of my old science teacher. he was a Floyd fan too, but we never really talked about them at all... I knew this was one of his favorite songs by them, and I think of him everytime I hear it. It's just such a beautiful song anyway... brings many emotions to you... one of Floyd's best, easily 3) Time This is mostly because it is my dad's favorite Floyd song. It was at his house one fateful weekend when I first heard "Dark Side of the Moon", on vinyl, the same vinyl my dad and his buddies in college wore to the nub by playing so much. I say it's a fateful weekend because A) I pretty much discovered Pink Floyd and B) because it was when my dad told me he was getting remarried. I met the woman he was marrying two weeks before they married, and she lived 2 1/2 hours away. We listened to DSotM on tape on the way down and on the way back. It's just a memory that sticks so much in your mind... 2) Brain Damage This is my 2nd favorite Floyd song, by a very close margin, for a few reasons. It was literally the first Floyd song I'd ever heard. It was the first song I ever learned on my guitar. It was the song during which my dad told me he was getting remarried. Of course the song itself is great, but its position on my list is partly because of its meaning in my own life. But that's what music is about, isn't it and.... my favorite Floyd song ever... 1) Shine on You Crazy Diamond Where do I start with this song... I guess I'll start when I first heard it, on my class trip last year to the mountains of North Carolina. I bought WYWH while I was down there, and listened to it when we walked back from the mall to our hotel room. I remember just listening to it and being completely amazed by it, and the entire album. But I think the main reason that this song is my favorite is that it has the strongest tie to imagery in my mind than any other song... Whenever I hear this song, I think vividly of riding the old train through the mountains, stopping in Bryson City, one of my favorite places ever. I remember staying up 'till 2:30 in the morning playing poker with my closest friends. And, most of all, I remember the breath-taking beauty of the Appalachian Mountains, and whenever I hear this song, I feel like I'm there again... I guess it's good that I have such a good memory tied to such a good song Well, that was my list. I don't really care what you say, comment if you want, whatever :) P.S. I posted this in the Floyd thread too, I just wanted to see what you guys thought. Not that I care that much... whatever :smoke: |
I've got too many favorites to compile a top 10.
With anything. |
I've got too many favorites to compile a top 10.

I could never name my favourite Floyd songs...albums maybe. I think it's a crime to take Floyds songs and listen to them outside their album. I used to hang out with a guy who, after one of us puts on any Floyd album, immediately stops it, puts in DSOTM and listens to Money like five times in a row. It's the main reason I stopped hanging out with him, besides him being a complete jerk in every sense of the word. He almost ruined Money for me.
|
Thats a good point, to listen to a Floyd song on a compilation or something similar puts the song out of context. To listen to a whole album through as opposed to the song itself sort of sets the mood.
|
The real question is....which Pink Floyd album is most intense? Like which album do you get so into that if the CD or record starts to skip, your heart skips a beat.
I'd say Saucerful of Secrets and DSOTM for sure. By the time the kazoo solo hits on Jugband Blues me and my friends are dancing around the room singing along....although I can recall quite a few times I've been so into DSOTM that we all screamed waiting for the clocks to chime on Time...and I'm pretty sure I've seen tears of joy in my friends eyes as Eclipse concludes. Me and my friends have a very strange and intimate relationship with Pink Floyd though. |
Hey, question for you guys. I don't know if ya know it but one of the bands I play in is a Classic Rock cover band. Would you guys be interested in hearing some recordings of our show from this Saturday nights show? If so I'll record it. Lemme know....
|
DSOTM when chilling out with mates, smoking up or drinking or what not and just sitting there in silence with the lights dimmed getting absorbed in the music until the album finished, Great Gig in the Sky is fantastic when all these blokes are trying, whilst under the influence of something or another to hit the high notes. Brings back great memories, that album in particular. I also like Meddle a great deal, I would have to say that would come in second.

Yeah man, that would be awesome. Do you take requests? Haha I'm just kidding...surprise us. Better be good! edit- Great Gig in the Sky is my favourite song to listen to in the shower....drives my family nuts, but I can sing pretty high. I'm actually twice as accurate when singing falsetto...which comes in handy sometimes (and othertimes just creeps people out). |
