Modes are only used in jazz to give things that clashing sound associated with some modes, but jazz is waaay to technical. My theory is stick to the pentatonic, and if it needs a harmonic/melodic minor or blues not here or there throw it in. I haven't actually learned how to play the major scale on guitar :lol: I just use my Minor shapes...[/QUOTE]

Actually jazz gets easier with time. Also it's extra satisfying when you pump out a god-like solo.

Eventually, as you progress you'll want to move away from the shapes to create more interesting licks. Also chromatics are fun. :thumb:

Opiate is a solid little collection of songs. Nothing ground breaking, but it shows you the root of the too machine, and how their styles have improved.

Plus its funny to laugh at young MJK voice in the live tracks

I reccomend the opiate album :) It has some good songs on there, cold an ugly is magic (to the stranger). I'd have thought you'd have bought undertow first though..(to Jake)

I do use chromatics and stuff when my ear wants me to play them. But it's always the minor shapes for a building block, none of this today i have to play in aeolian mode because the key change goes form this to this to this...etc

I have the giving birth to a stone album by peach ( with Justin), but the bass just let's you know it's him though.
I love Justin's bass sound, so well flowing

Aeolian is the same as the minor scale.

I've had this thought in my head for a while, but I never posted about it. Me and Med were just talking about Ænima on msn. I came up with an explanation of why Tool named it Ænima, and then spelled the title track differently.

The peach album is quality, gotta love spasm, and the cover of catfood is most amusing. Meh i don't think of it as a minor scale, and it was the first mode that came to my head :( maan it's like being in the guitar forum.

Pretty much what i think, and what Tool have stated in the past. The track/album thing is always confused by people though

The Aenima idea seems fair enough to me, specailly with all the bad shizz going on beforehand desenzitization, MJK's childhood troubles, the sellout message in hooker..., whatever push!ts about... yeah seems cool to me :)

That gets me thinking, what the hell is push!t about?

I've gathered that it could be metaphorically being backed into a corner, and then lashing out (the hands around your throat part).

Push1t gives me the impression of a a relationship break up of mutual consent. One where both sides are negatively effected by each other, and realise the only way to continue is seperate

Ok, maybe that's just my personal interpretation based on personal feelings towards the song. But that's how I see it.

I never read the lyrics so I could be wrong based only on what I've heard.

Does it relate to H. ? I always thought that was about a relationship 'I am too connected to you, slip away, fade away. Taste the way i still feel you, touching me, changing me.' Sounds to me like he's had a relationship, but still needs to deal with the person in life, and it hurts. But he uses 'his eyes' instead of your or her... :confused:

meh that was my interp of H, and i was kind of on those lines with push!t, liek he was in a relationship, had a way of getting out, but the fact that the other half still says they love him and he likes the action 'alive when your touching me...' adn the infant mixed up in there somwehre...

But can't get my head around 'staring down the hole again..' i can't really find anythign that can be a metaphor for in a relationship...

Hole - Void. The emptyness of feelings between each ohter. In other words, a loveless relationship that isnt benefiting anyone and has long lost meaning or purpose. Which could then tie in with a drug theme

Amen, it is great. 'Cept when youg et shiz on your mind and can't sleep :( The whole Hole (hehehe) thing is kinda strange though because he says there is still love in the relationship and physical stuff, it's just the fact he's getting sh!t pushed on him that he wants out, and he can see an exit...He's probably held from going through the gap by love, leaving me still confused on the hole thing. Im going to have to look at Pushi[I]t[/I]s lyrics again. My views on that though are biased to personal experiences, and as we know, working out MJK's original intentions is like traversing a minefield with no legs

I think, lyrically and philosophically Aenima was thier best album so far. Hopefully the new one will have as much "meat on the bone" as Aenima.

Well i don't think anyones ever sniffing near a true meaning to these personal songs...It's only songs like the grudge and stinkfist that can be interpreted well...

I usually read the lyrics at songmeanings.net and post what I think the song means. I don't post there anymore because people think its cool to start arguements over what they think the lyrics should read :angry: . Meh, just an idea for a place to read lyrics without getting 500 pop-ups.

The political motive behind Emotive is the main reason I don't own that album. It was an original idea that was worth a try, but I just don't like the idea of Maynard singing about politics. Maybe it's just me.

edit: I don't think Tool will sell out, I just don't think it is possible for such a great band to sell out.

well the political motive and the fact that A Perfect Circle kind of butchered up Led's "When the Levee Breaks" are the main reasons i didn't buy Emotive. When I heard their version of that song, I just wanted to cry because I thought A Perfect Circle could surely do better than that.

I liked Mer de Noms, but my complaint was the lack of originality, I guess. I haven't actually listened to it that much though.

I don't mind when the levee breask, there arem more annoying songs on the album...
