AJG, have you heard any Mars Volta?
Only the tracks that have videos to accompany them. I was going to get FTM last week, but decided on the new Mogwai instead. Fair to say, im still waiting to dig my teeth into them

Otherside 03-19-2005 12:58 PM

You want me to upload their first cd for you? It's major ace.

Adam Jones is GOD 03-19-2005 01:00 PM

Set me up with a few tracks, that are not the Esp one or televators. il probably end up buying both in either case

Otherside 03-19-2005 01:02 PM

Ok, I'll upload Roulette Dares and Take The Veil Cerpin Taxt, those are pretty good.

mars volta has an amazing live show, i saw with a perfect circle and well it reminded my (in an odd way) of a zeppelin show. the way they improv (nothing there was exactly the way it was on the versions i've heard anyway) the energy, the acoustics were bad (**** tacoma dome) but excellent show.

jamesclelland 03-19-2005 01:35 PM

btw, i'm getting a live dvd of a tool show, it's bootlegged for sure, i'll let you all know if i got really ripped off or just a little ripped off. suposed to have:
sober, flood, stinkfist, parabola, eba, patient, aenima, lateralus, etc...

clearvision 03-19-2005 02:04 PM

Listen to TOOL at 1.4x speed. It's quite an interesting listen, and believe me, it's awesome.

Recommended Songs:

46&2 (This whole song sounds so good.)
Lateralus (The last half of this song is great.)
Parabola (The intro simply... plows? It's awesome.)

46&2 and Lateralus at 1.4x sound better than they do at normal speed.

Be warned though, after listening to some of the songs at 1.4x speed, the songs at regular speed may seem boring.

Dude3 03-19-2005 07:29 PM
Listen To Tool At 1.4x Speed. You Will Love Me.

Recommended Songs:

46&2 (aaaaaamazing)
Lateralus (the Last Half Is Soooo Good)
Parabola (the Intro Sounds So... I Just Want To Rock Out)

Now! Do It!

(sorry For The Caps Lock, My Keyboard Is Broken And I Don't Feel Like Holding Shift All The Time)
why listen to them at 1.4x speed???

Neurotoxin 03-19-2005 07:35 PM

...they haven't released new material in how long?

Sometimes it's nice to change it up and try something new.
Any Tool fans who really don't like APC in here?
There must be a few.
I'm not one of them, although i would rather see another 2 Tool Albums than one of each.
Well I only listen to about 3 APC songs, so yeah I guess I don't like them. They're just monotonous, too radio-friendly for my tastes (I have a phobia).

I think it's good for Maynard though, because if he had no place to sing simple, short, pop songs, then he'd probably get bored of singing all of these 6 minute songs.

Kage 03-19-2005 09:43 PM

I wouldn't call APC songs "simple, short, pop songs."

I used to despise APC. The first time I heard them, I was sort of determined not to like them, because I didn't want to like them better than Tool. So eventually my friend bought both their albums and I lsitened to them, but everytime I tried to get into them I was in this weird mindset that I shouldn't like them, so I didn't.

Then it progressed into a loathing because they kept taking time away from what Maynard could be spending with Tool. I knew it was rediculous, and I just kept thinking This is good stuff, this music is exactly the kind of stuff I like, yet I don't like it. Finally, one day I sat down and blasted Thirteenth Step at full volume, and it melted away all my pre-set biases and blew me away. Now I'm a huge fan.

Dried Muffin Remnants 03-19-2005 10:46 PM

APC? They're not Tool. I think that APC is a lot more melodic and catchy than Tool. However, I think that Tool is a lot more creative, thought-provoking, and just more interesting.

But I try not to compare these bands because they're different styles. Some people consider APC a "prog" band. I disagree, the stuff I hear from them doesn't sound particularly "ground-breaking" per se. Their songs have a clear beat. Tool does not.

I guess I went on a bit of a tangent, but I like both bands and for different reasons. I like Tool more overall, because it gives you more of a lasting effect.

Yes, I agree with you mostly. I don't think APC and Tool have much ground to be compared, because they are significantly different styles. I just had an assciation, which is obviously because of Maynard.

But I view APC as a completely seperate entity as Tool, and obviously they are. I definately like Tool more. They're more powerful as a band, and I like them better as seperate instrumentalists as well.

I think APC is prog, but in a more alternative sense and probably one of the simpler prog bands. If nothing else they're an Alternative band.

Dried Muffin Remnants 03-19-2005 10:58 PM

I just don't get how they're "prog"... Their songs are melodic and have pretty typical beats. Maynard's vocals are superb, but that's a different thing.

The Mars Volta is a prog alt band because they are really "all over the place" in a good way. There's a lot of change, not a lot of chorus nor are there repetetive riffs.

why H. last? Third Eye is the best closing song i think if your combining them.

Kage 03-19-2005 10:59 PM

Eh, I'm not exactly sure. Prog is so broad that it's really hard to argue. For the sake of clarity, though, I'll just call them Alternative.

My iTunes automatically erases seconds off songs... It pissed me off for everything except for Son Et Lumiere into Inertiatic ESP by the Mars Volta. That worked quite well.

Dr. Jake Destructo 03-19-2005 11:14 PM

I have gone through multiple stages with APC. At first, I liked them quite a bit, then, after about 5 or so listens through 13th step, I stopped listening to it. Then, about a month later, I popped it into my cd player while I was on a road trip. I found it to be extremely boring. I let it collect dust for another 2 months, then I popped it back in, and found it ok. My new outlook on APC is that it is Maynard's outlet to make radio rock so that with Tool, he can do a bunch of expirimental stuff. :-/ This is, of course, the abridged version, but you get what I am getting at, I think.

While APC do incorporate many progressive elements into their music, I generally consider them alternative/metal/art rock. Art rock in itself is kind of like progressive rock's little brother.

Dr. Jake Destructo 03-20-2005 12:52 AM

art rock is prog rock, as far as I'm concerned. And, by no stretch are APC metal. I don't even consider Tool metal. Not like it matters.
