Indie music is virtually impossible to define as all it means is something on an independent label, and by that definition black metal bands could be indie. To me the characteristics of indie music include minimal production, instrumental simplicity for the most part, and often harsh sounding music, sometimes with melody lurking underneath all of that. But I can't really tell you what would be an indie band...I'd just tell someone to listen to a few albums and work it out from there. And yeah, modern rock exists. It's a broad definition, but it's the loosest possible genre for bands like A Perfect Circle, Muse, etc...kind of meaningless, but there you go.
Yeah that's what I figured too...sort of like calling Avant Garde a genre. In the last seven posts, I'm the only one without stars. Oh well, I know for a fact that I don't contribute as much as Lunch, Schyma, you...or Seafroggies I suppose  I just try to make good posts and be friendly. edit- I've honestly had the song Poverty Train by Laura Nyro in my head for about a week now. And I can only remember the chorus... |
I also like how when some of us make threads (my ELO thread comes to mind...), it dies off after about 1 or 2 pages. The most succesfull classic rock thread (besides this one) is probably Lunch's series or the Official threads.
It seems that most of the metal fans aren't open minded enough for good ol' Classic Rock. :( |
Alright what's the name of the Bob Dylan song...I'm trying to think what album it's off of. I'm thinking it's off of Blonde on Blonde, but I'm probably wrong because I listen to Blonde on Blonde quite regularly and I hope I'm not this stupid. It's the song where they stop playing like ten seconds in and they all start laughing, then they start up again. Someone should know the name.

Oh ok! I was trying to think of that forever! Thanks a lot. You were pretty quick on the draw there. :thumb: I was at my cottage for four days, and I finished my book...so I picked up Chronicles and flipped to a page in the middle. Since then I can't go for more than like half an hour without listening to him. I've read Chronicles like ten times now and I still don't get bored of it. I love Bob Dylan with a fiery passion. |

Television - Marquee Moon
That's "Bob Dylan's 115th Dream"...it's on Bringing It All Back Home
Sweet song, one of my favorites by him. |
Man, I missing having Bringing It All Back Home it's his best album. (IMO)
"Darkness at the break of noon shadows even the sliver spoon the hand made blade the child's balloon there is no sence in crying." (something like that) MAN I miss that album! Is anyone cool enough to upload that for me? Please? :( |

Off that album, Maggie's Farm and Mr. Tambourine Man > It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)

Thanks a million man. :D |
Oh schnap....it'll be a while because my computer with that album on it isn't working.
Oh schnap....it'll be a while because my computer with that album on it isn't working.
That's cool take your time it'll take me forever to download this anyway. :)
What is Marquee Moon in? (mp3s, m4as, wmas?)
Off that album, Maggie's Farm and Mr. Tambourine Man > It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)
It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) > Anything Bob Dylan ever wrote Has anyone heard his offcial bootlegs? His 1964 set on Halloween is AMAZING!!! It's probablly my favorite Dylan recording and one of my favorite live sets for sure. |
It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) > Anything Bob Dylan ever wrote
No. |
I don't own his official bootlegs, but I've heard a decent amount of them. I love them. Oh and by the way, I'm pretty sure that verse goes "darkness at the break of noon shadows even the silver spoon the handmade blade the childs balloon eclipses both the sun and moon to understand you know too soon there is no sense in trying." or something similar. That songs amazing.
If you guys haven't visited heard...Martin Scorsese is directing a two part biography film on Dylan and it's gonna come out in September. I'm not sure what my favourite Dylan song is...I could give a top ten maybe. |

I like a ton of Dylan songs better than that one on a whole though. I have live '64 and live '75. Live '75 pwns Live '64. Live '64 is good, but Live '75 just leaves me speechless. Probably my favorite Dylan album to listen to. Live '66 is supposed to be awesome too, and I'm hoping that I get that for my birthday next month. Edit- best part of It's Alright Ma is: "He not busy being born is busy dyin'." |
Robo: I actully didn't like Live '66 that much. The acoustic side is nice but the electric side although not bad the sound quality is sub par but the last two songs are classics. It's the famous "JUDUS!!" concert.
thickasabrick: ****, I never get that right. :-/ We talked about that DVD a while ago. Can't wait to see it. I mean it HAS to be good if Martin Scorsese is directing and it's about Bob Dylan. It's a formula for greatness! |
Yea that DVD has to be awesome. Is there a specific release date? I'll probably get the Live '66 cd anyway. It's a famous concert, so it's got to be cool to hear it even if the audio quality is subpar.
|
I've yet to come in contact with anything by Martin Scorsese or Bob Dylan I didn't like.
It's Alright Ma Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands Idiot Wind Hurricane Like a Rolling Stone Just Like a Woman Blowin in the Wind Masters of War Subterrenean Homesick Blues Mr. Tambourine Man There I named ten, those probably aren't all my favourites, but off the top of my head those are ten that stand out right now. |
No.
Indeed There's many better. |
I'm going to be really generic and say that Desolation Row is my all time favourite Dylan song...everything on Blood On The Tracks merges into one for me (that's a good thing), but Desolation Row is pretty much the only song that long, which doesn't really change at all that I actually listen to on a regular basis, let alone particularly like. And lyrically I think it absolutely epitomises everything that made Dylan one of the best lyricists of all time.
Lyrically I'd say Desolation Row is Bob Dylan, although it's not my favourite song by him. I prefer Ballad of a Thin Man and Like a Rolling Stone off that album. I totally agree with you about Blood on the Tracks though, that album alone can take up my top 10 list if it wants. It brings tears to my eye it's so great. edit- And I don't find anything overly generic about your statement about Desolation Row. Usually people just say Like a Rolling Stone. |
So i saw ABB, I guess I'm the last here to see them, but they were great. Warren Haynes just wasn't as good as Dicky Betts was, though
Halfway through the show they rolled in another Amp/moniter, and Trey Anastasio came on to play Mountain Jam. I was like  and then :amaze: and then :D |
I'd expect a reaction like
...............................................................................................................................*music*.........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................*drum solo*..................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................*key change* ......................................................................................................................................................................................................:D |
I haven't seen the Allmans, so you're not the only one, Med. :(

Losers.

CHUCK NORRIS!?" |
Ballad Of A Thin Man is amazing, yeah...overall Highway 61 Revisited isn't Dylan's best album, but I'd say that the stand out tracks on it are the best on any Dylan recording. Blood On The Tracks is the rock album that I consider to be nearest to musical perfection, personally, so obviously that's my favourite Dylan album.
Man, has everyone ITT seen the Allmans recently? /left out :(
I saw them on the 20th at the Tweetah Centah in Boston  My roommate has this awesome book, Rolling Stone: The Decades of Rock & Roll and I've been flipping through it today. Very well-written, very informative. It also has Keef, Dylan, Paul, and a bunch of other rock stars giving their input on certain things. I reccommend it. NP: The Rolling Stones - Salt of the Earth |
I could've gone to see them, but nobody wanted to really go, and it was expensive.
|
I have a live version of the Stones doing Salt Of The Earth live with Izzy & Axl from Guns N' Roses. Such a wonderful band, even after all this time.
I love that song. That whole album is incredible, actually. |
Indeed
There's many better.
I'd say it's not his best, but it's definitely up there. |

Man, has everyone ITT seen the Allmans recently? /left out :(
I'd say Blonde and Blonde and Highway 61 Revisited have the most stand-out tracks, although Blood on the Tracks far surpasses them in terms of entire albumness. We must have really similar music tastes, because I feel the same way you do about Blood on the Tracks, I think only Pink Floyd and The Beatles have produced albums that can stand up to Dylans. I've never seen the Allmans, and I doubt I will ever get to. If I wanna see them it's at least a several hour drive...and school is starting up for me in a couple days and I am going to start working again and stuff so you know how it is. I'm really digging this Marquee Moon album, I'm on the third song...the songs seem to get progressively more wonderful! |
