I love xkcd, it reminds me of how engineers have very limited ways of thought

motogrifo 05-14-2010 12:11 AM

also, SMBC
http://www.smbc-comics.com/index.php?db=comics&id=1879#comic
that one is gold

Left Face Down 05-14-2010 12:30 AM

I must say, that one was good moto. The xkcd one posted above was not. Yours definitely rings true. :D
Why do people try to strike up small talk on/waiting for elevators? Some woman who looked like she was in her mid-30's just made my elevator ride weird. Though it probably doesn't beat the two nuns from a few days a go.
Why are you such a sociopath?
I get the joke, but it is poorly done. Plus I'm an engineer and engineering > mathematician. Well, depending what area they study. Engineers focus more on Calculus where mathematics majors often focus on Algebra.
I assure you that anyone with a degree in maths has a pretty diverse grasp of calculus and to lump stuff like Set Theory and Topology under 'algebra' is a bit demeaning, all maths of any use is ultimately algebra in some form (including calculus)

Bwahaha, I'd only just linked someone to that on FB....

SMBC is probably the most consistent comic out there - loads have dry patches (or in xkcd's case, a year-long decline) but SMBC is always at least fairly funny.

Bruce E Kinesis 05-14-2010 06:19 AM

xkcd was actually good once but the problem is he keeps knocking out 3 crappy comics a week instead of 1 good one

the best at the moment has to be Hark! A Vagrant though.

AG 05-14-2010 02:08 PM

Just finished a degree in Media, Communication and Cultural studies. That I hated with a passion.

What do you want to do as a masters?

Bruce E Kinesis 05-14-2010 02:15 PM

I'm seriously looking forward to my master's year

60/120 credits is one full time 10 week project investigating some gamma ray observations that my supervisor has

JoshIsNumber3 05-14-2010 02:29 PM

i agree, thinking about how great grad school will be makes my dick hard. going right into a phd program at some prestigious school for neuroscience and getting paid omg

Shame about that. See it through for the sake of it?

Sort of the problem - I'm not sure.

Audio Tech - Probably too technical.
Performing and Composition - Not an appealing prospect.
Composing for Television and Film - Rather appealing, but I'm not sure I'd be up to it.
Music Management - Interesting, but not something I'd want to do a Masters in.

In short, it seems as though I like the idea more than anything else. I'll probably discuss my options with someone at the university.

AG 05-14-2010 03:30 PM

Yeah, I finished it because I didn't want to come out of 2-3 years with nothing. I'd rather have a 3rd than nothing.

Bruce E Kinesis 05-15-2010 02:47 AM

I doubt any employers will see much difference

**** yeah.

But no.

Maybe do a PhD in ethnomusicology by doing a paper examining the musical tastes of the four cultures is my surrounding area.

For everyone else, sorry, that's something of an in-joke.

House, Techno, Grime and Dubstep?

spirit 05-15-2010 08:33 AM
House, Techno, Grime and Dubstep?
Could probably lump House and Techno together and then include Modern R&B.

Also, House M.D. could stand more 303.

I just applied for a Carpentry apprenticeship starting in October. Fingers crossed.

Bruce E Kinesis 05-16-2010 07:08 AM

They'll be impressed by your dedication to your previous studies

AG 05-16-2010 07:18 AM

I think they may be inpressed that I've not been out of employment for longer than 2 months (whilst gaining qualifications) since I was 16.

Do you work, moaner?

Bruce E Kinesis 05-16-2010 07:42 AM

I work summers, physics degrees are pretty full time tbh

We don't get 'holidays' at christmas or easter we get revision time and during the week it ends up the equivalent of 9-5 once you do your homework

Same here in electronic engineering. Except our hours ARE 9-5 all year aside from wednesdays....

And we're expected to do nearly as many hours work when we're at home. A mate of mine calculated how many hours that would be left free if we did exactly the amount of hours we 'should' do and it turned out we'd get 3 hours free a month or something ridiculous like that.

Considering how badly our department is organised it's pretty much impossible to get that many hours work done anyway.
