I feel even worse for Stu Stucliff. I mean, being dead and all.
I feel even worse for Stu Stucliff. I mean, being dead and all.
Ya, but he dosen't have to live everyday filled with regret and what could have been thoughts.
Why didn't you say that when I asked how Paul was scary?! That explains it completely!
Haha.. Well it didn't bother me, since I'm not a guy.

And yeah, it sucks for Pete Best.

DeusExMachina 01-14-2006 09:15 PM
well seeing as Cream sold more records in 24 months than the bible sold in 24 years, and that the Beatles are way bigger than Cream, I think statistics has to disagree ;)
That's because everyone already owns the bible. The bible is the best selling book of all time. So, if we want to look at a time frame argument, I'd say the bible is more popular. Statistically.

/is feeling argumentative.

Seafroggys 01-14-2006 09:23 PM

welll.....bleh to you too

actually, about Pete Best, he wasn't a loner, in fact he was the sex symbol of the Beatles. many people were PISSED that they axed him, and it took people in Britain a long time (well after they were famous) to accept Ringo.
I feel even worse for Stu Stucliff. I mean, being dead and all.
Was Stu a nickname? Kind of like Mitch Mitchell?

DeusExMachina 01-14-2006 09:49 PM

No, his last name is sutcliffe, not stucliffe. Although it might still be a nickname, not sure.

Seafroggys, sorry, I was just messing around.

But yeah, lots of people were pissed Pete Best left. Like in that Simpsons parody.

Oh, that's what I originally thought.

What did Best play? Did he have a solo career?

/asks more questions

Phallus Dei 01-14-2006 10:14 PM

He played drums but wasn't much of a drummer if I remember correctly. Or nothing wamzing

Led-ZeppelinII 01-14-2006 10:23 PM
So, there is something important to personality dynamics when joining a band. There is definitely a lesson to learned here..... :)
Oh, definately. Being in a band is all about collaboration, compromise, and just generally being open. Having the musical skills of any of the Beatles probably wouldn't have amounted to shit if they didn't know how to work with each other.

rockinbass17 01-14-2006 10:43 PM
He played drums but wasn't much of a drummer if I remember correctly. Or nothing wamzing
He was alright. I have a vinyl of The Beatles with Tony Sheridan, an incredibly early album, and the drumming isn't bad. Sure, it's not great, but he didn't suck.

bcf717 01-15-2006 07:23 PM

Pete didn't 'suck' at drumming, but as George Martin pointed out, he was too one dimensional. He was more of a four beat drummer and had trouble working with more complex timings. In song covers like 'Anna' and 'Chains' he tended to still give the 'bam bam bam bam' treatment. Ringo had more finesse and worked well with the bounce that became the template for the 'Mersey Sound.'

Pete was a loner in the sense he didn't hang with the others for the all night carousing and bar hopping that happened after the shows. That type of hanging around was very important in maintaining your clique, especially for teenage boys -- which they were. Pete wasn't 'tight' with John and Paul in that sense and didn't try to get tighter while in the band. George wasn't 'tight' to begin with, but worked to 'tighten' his standings and it payed off handsomely. Yes, Pete was a chick magnet and the others showed jealousy which finally brought on the ax...... however, had he been part of the clique from the git-go,... perhaps that jealousy would have been overlooked (as it was between John and Paul through the years).

Leper 01-16-2006 01:37 AM

Yeah I feel sorry for Pete Best too. You can't really blame the Beatles for going along with Martin and replacing him, but If I was him I would've felt very betrayed.

It'd be funny if the Simpsons parody was 100% accurate and the Beatles' first meeting with Ringo was him on the floor of a bathroom stall looking for a toothpick. I could see Ringo doing that.

Seafroggys 01-16-2006 02:08 AM

has anyone seen Caveman? I really want to see that movie

blue3 01-16-2006 02:19 AM

I've never seen it. I want to though but I can't find it anywhere.

MidnightRider 01-16-2006 02:22 AM

Just thinking about how Pete Best must feel now makes me sick. There's nothing worse than being left out of something big.

NP: Norwegian Wood

bcf717 01-16-2006 09:18 PM

There's two ways you can handle a situation like Pete's..... 1 - Carry on, find a new band and continue the pursuit of stardom, or 2 - Feel sorry for yourself and wallow in self pity, allowing the feelings to fester, making it easy to concede self defeat. Pete joined other bands after his release, but I think he lacked that 'drive' needed to go on to the top. After the Beatles got famous without him, many Brit bands made it big. The Beatles stardom actually made other Brit bands very desirable to record companies. The Stones, Kinks and even Gerry and the Pacemakers got signed, as after the Beatles proved that Brits could rock, the demand for more British bands escalated. So the opportunity was there.

John, Paul and George lived, ate, and breathed for the band. Their combination was the magic that started it all. However, if one of them had been axed before stardom, I'm sure the drive they had would have insured them stardom in another band one way or another.

Leper 01-17-2006 12:10 AM

Apparently the Beatles almost broke up after they got back from their first stint in Germany. They talk about it in the Anthology book. As I recall they weren't even in contact for a couple weeks after they got back home.

Yeah. That would be terrible. I also feel bad for Sutcliffe, on account of the whole dying thing.

magicbus 01-17-2006 01:58 PM

The guy down the hall gave me a Yellow Submarine poster because it kept falling down. So technically this doesn't break my promise of not "buying" anymore Beatles posters.

Jacaranda 01-17-2006 07:18 PM

No your right. It was at an airport me thinks. But I dunno, the guy sucked at bass any way.

Seafroggys 01-17-2006 07:27 PM

I saw his artwork at the hall of fame back in '01

It's really hard to pick out individual songs, but I will reccomend the albums Rubber Soul and Abbey Road. You could always just go buy 1, that's what first got me into The Beatles.

Seafroggys 01-17-2006 08:27 PM

wtf are Stones songs doing in there?

Laredo 01-17-2006 08:28 PM

thanks

Chilly-Bean-Bop 01-17-2006 08:29 PM

The Beatles are the really the best group in the world. Paperback Writer and Lady Madonna are my favorite songs.

magicbus 01-17-2006 08:54 PM

Jacandra I do not get you.

You didn't really think you'd get away with that did you? Still good songs though, and if you want to get into the Stones I'd check those 3 out plus a lot more.

But for The Beatles, I'd just buy Rubber Soul. It got me into them.

Just listen to all of Revolver, and if you MUST single out some songs, try Taxman, Elenor Rigby, She Said She Said, Got To Get You Into My Life, and Tomorrow Never Knows.

Nice try Jacaranda. I would listen to those Stones songs just for the hell of it Laredo, really good stuff.

Laredo 01-17-2006 10:05 PM

i have a new favourite band!
cheers guys

Yay for the Stones!
And if you by chance listened to any of those songs those are just the tip of the iceberg that are the Beatles. So many much amazing work, I'm not a big fan of pre-Rubber Soul so I didn't include any of that stuff, cause frankly I think its garbage for the most part.

... I'm sorry I couldn't resist guys... I just had to do that.

Nic__ 01-17-2006 11:06 PM

Didn't John only know like 3 chords when he first joined the beatles. Also some more random facts-

*Paul played drums on Back in the USSR
*Paul played guitar on Taxman
*PAUL IS DEAD ZOMGWTF
*Pauls real name is James Paul Mccartney

Thats odd. I can't think of any other facts. They're all about paul :P

Laredo 01-17-2006 11:33 PM

i just found out i had rubber soul, sgt peppers and abbey road on my computer!! :O

but they were under my dads name so i never even looked there...

Magical_Mystery_Tour 01-18-2006 08:01 PM

Well There are so many Beatle songs to choose from that I don't even want to get started on a huge list. I'll just tell you the first song that brought me into the Beatle Nation: Strawberry Fields Forever. Possibly my fav Beatle song of all time. Good luck.

Broken needles have silenced so many records in the past 15 years or so....they should start mass producing them again.
