Mmm, new DVD.
Live Octavarium sounds godly to me. |
Yeh but you know what i mean. Did DT do a cover of Aces High?
I don't think so, although I do have a version of The Trooper they did with Bruce Dickinson. |

I didn't know that. Does anyone have that and are willing to upload it? |
Mmm, new DVD.

Yes, its being recorded in New York in March. |
Sounds pretty great.
I'm going to watch Budokan tonight... |
So I thought maybe some of you on here could help me out.
At my college I'm a volunteer DJ for the student-run free-format radio station. Periodically throughout the semester, we could sign up for "artist features" where we basically play one artist and tell the listening audience a little about the artist. So of course I jumped on one and picked Dream Theater. Each artist feature show is an hour and a half long, which as you can imagine is proving to be a challenge with Dream Theater. I had the concept of possibly doing one song from each of DT's full-length with the exception of WDADU (because I don't like it and don't officially own it) and one for each dist of 6DOIT. I was wondering what you guys thought of this idea, and if you like it what songs would you recommend I play. If you want to suggest something, I'm not looking for single-song suggestions, I'm looking for entire playlist suggestions (keep in mind I have an hour and a half and I have to talk about the significant events with the band in between each song). Thanks in advance anyone who tries to take this on. Btw, I have my own playlist already selected, but I'm wondering what you all think and I might alter mine a little based on what you say. |
What's your playlist?
It would probably be better if we commented on yours then 20 people making lists. |
Mmm, new DVD.
Live Octavarium sounds godly to me.
amen brotha. amen. i just might get...a little happy watching it. im so jealous of europe, SA, and asia that got to witness 8vm live.
JP's solo at the end of In The Name Of God on the Budokan DVD is better than the Hollow Years one IMO. Not saying Hollow Years doesn't rock, I just absolutely love the end of In The Name Of God.
anyone notice that in "in the name of god" on budokan, he's out of tune in the end? and one of the last high notes he holds b4 shredding into the band's final "all-out" moment is cringe-worthily flat. |
amen brotha. amen.

which show were you at?
and when you say jordan's solo...is it the one in 8vm? or did he play one before? i have some vids of them playing 8vm live, and it didnt seem like JR extended his solo |
I saw them both nights at the Hammmersmith Apollo in London.
It was the thing he plays right at the start of it, on his red pad thing. It lasts about 3 minutes on the album but it must have gone on for about 10 minutes live. |

That bored me.

People help me please :O:O I watched this video of mike portnoy and it has some parts from songs (from train of thought), and i was wondering which song belongs to ''short movie'' 6 (if you count the part ''audio commentary'' as 1), or the second last of all, the really like hard metal riff.. i like it and i want to know which song it is :). please help me with this..
|

http://www.youtube.com/w/MP?v=qrNeMlmDg6k&search=mike%20portnoy |
What songs you want to the names of? All of them in order they're played on the video?
As I am Honor Thy Father Can't tell what the next one is, it's just drums Endless Sacrifice Honor Thy Father again Stream Of Conciousness Not completely sure on the last one. Might be in The Name of God. |
the second last one.. not like the-end-of-a-song-fading-out-thingy, but the really like hard metal riff thing before that:P honor thy father i guess.
thanks man :D |
If it's not that try Stream Of Conciousness.
|
ok thnx..
|
actually, better idea :]
get the whole album. there's nice heavy riffs in each song except vacant. |

Oh God I got that all wrong. |
What's your playlist?

Images & Words - either Metropolis Pt. 1 or Under a Glass Moon Awake - Scarred Falling Into Infinity - New Millennium or Lines in the Sand or Trial of Tears Metropolis Pt. 2 - Fatal Tragedy or Beyond This Life or Dance of Eternity 6DOIT Disc 1 - The Glass Prison 6DOIT Disc 2 - either War Inside My Head + TTTSTA or just TTTSTA Train of Thought - This Dying Soul Octavarium - TROAE or Panic Attack With the right (or rather wrong) combination of these songs it brings it to right around an hour and a half, which sucks because I need time for talking about the band too and probably station programming. What do you all think? |
Good idea.

Change of Seasons Scenes From a Memory: The whole record... :( Like in Roseland. Six Degrees: The Glass Prison, Misunderstood, War Inside My Head ToT: ITNOG, Endless Sacrifice Octavarium: Panic Attack, Root Of All Evil, Octavarium, Sacrificed Sons. I honestly would break down if I ever saw them playing a set resembling this.
I really like 8VM, it's one of my favourites, actually. Not as much as SFAM or I&W, But I really do like it.
I'm going to have to agree with that. Except I would choose it over Awake. 8VM is amazing, and is like cross between I&W and the First Disc of SDOIT. Which to me, is pretty perfect. Except for an entire album sounding like SFAM again. Which would be amazing. |
Good idea.
Images & Words - either Metropolis Pt. 1 or Under a Glass Moon Awake - Scarred (I would go Lifting Shadows Off A Dream) Falling Into Infinity - New Millennium or Lines in the Sand or Trial of Tears Metropolis Pt. 2 - Fatal Tragedy or Beyond This Life or Dance of Eternity 6DOIT Disc 1 - The Glass Prison 6DOIT Disc 2 - either War Inside My Head + TTTSTA or just TTTSTA Train of Thought - This Dying Soul (I would say Endless Sacrifice) Octavarium - TROAE or Panic Attack
Picks bolded or italicized. |

The time limit I have is an hour and a half, hence why I'm not playing CoS or 8VM. I made that post because those are the songs I'm thinking about playing and I was wanting some constructive input about what you all thought. Deth-Thank you for your post, I appreciate it. I have to say I'm not a fan of Lifting Shadows Off a Dream and that as good as Endless Sacrifice is that I like the fast paced-ness of This Dying Soul. Thank you for your input though, I'm definitely taking it into consideration. |
I only just figured out that i love In The Name Of God.:p I never even noticed it before that. BTW does anyone think that the start of Octavarium(song) sounds a lot like Pink Floyd for the first 3 mins or so.
|
Hey, I'm starting to get into Dream Theater, and I was wondering what you guys thought would be a good album to start with. I have an iTunes gift certificate so I'm probably going to buy one of their albums from there.
edit: ok, basically off itunes I can buy three of their albums: Live at Budokan Train of Thought Octavarium I can also buy Metropolis, Once in a Livetime, or Awake, but those three are only "partial" albums so I can only buy the songs individually and not all the songs are available, so I'd rather not go that direction. So out of the first three mentioned, which is probably the best? |
i personally like Octavarium more than ToT. But Train Of Thought has great songs like Stream Of Conciousness. But id go for live at Budokan. It has songs from both albums. And songs that aren't from either so it gives you a feel for the band. And its live!

I still love it, I probably am going to listen to a few songs from it tonight. Amazing album in my opinion. |
Cant go wrong with Train of Thought if you ask me, also Metropolis II: Scences from a memory should be checked out
|
Cant go wrong with Train of Thought if you ask me, also Metropolis II: Scences from a memory should be checked out
That's to be expected from someone who has dimebag as their username, ToT is by far their darkest, heaviest album. However, that isn't what DT is about to me. I think anyone new should check out Awake or I&W to see what DT really is about. |
I would get Budokon. It has both stuff from ToT and 6DOIT, as well as the awsome Instrumedley and a few songs from other cds (Pull Me Under).
