^ Yeah I waited almost all night for something interesting to happen then I go to bed and BAM... posting mayhem.

Just watch, I'm ganna go study now and everyone will come on and start posting...

Huber 04-17-2005 11:11 AM

Okay, he's gone. We can start now.

clearvision 04-17-2005 11:30 AM

Yeah lets go :) I just got Nin's still release, it's quality. It has stripped down versions of their songs, i think tool should try and follow this, it would be cool to strip down some songs to acoustic guitar or piano, maybe have it as a bonus disc with the DVD cause we've all been patiently waiting for so long.

/not gonna happen

misunderstood 04-17-2005 12:27 PM

^ That would be great! But what are the chances... :(

The JoZ 04-17-2005 12:28 PM

I've already said I'd be glad to do bass backing tracks if someone wants them. :thumb:

Adam Jones is GOD 04-17-2005 12:50 PM
And kage has now gone from 6 posts in front of me, to 40...hmm... Just my luck though, i go out and the crazy posting starts
Pah, you'll never catch me :p

And 123 on the SFK uploads. Thoug god knows what his gig schedule is like

The JoZ 04-17-2005 12:54 PM

Oh yeah, it may take me longer than 5 minutes. I'm playing it on my 6 string, and yeah...

Tool is much easier to play on my 4, but I don't have it on me...plus it's got the wrong strings on it :(

Adam Jones is GOD 04-17-2005 01:00 PM

No matter, im in no rush. Wont be for a while till I can put it to use with my recordings anyway, as I need to somehow record my recordings first.

You record line in, or with a mic?

clearvision 04-17-2005 01:00 PM

Excuses :p

Darkness 04-17-2005 01:09 PM

joz, I know your busy right now with part of me and only have your 6 string but if you could sometime mabye do the first 3 min of the grudge... that would be awesome.

The JoZ 04-17-2005 01:16 PM

I use a mic.

Darkness - Why only the first three minutes? I can play the whole song...

Darkness 04-17-2005 01:21 PM

That works to :D. I just didn't want to take 8:36 min of your time...

The JoZ 04-17-2005 01:23 PM
That works to :D. I just didn't want to take 8:36 min of your time...
Darkness 04-17-2005 01:25 PM

Me too....if you do a grudge BT i'll definately post somethin.

The JoZ 04-17-2005 02:02 PM

I should be having band practice tomorrow, so that means I can get my four string back.

I'll have to re-string it for Tool, but yeah.

I'll take requests, and do them tomorrow.

Adam Jones is GOD 04-17-2005 02:03 PM

If you taking a few requests

The Patient
Stinkfist
Jerk Off

(I would feel guity asking for loads, but I know playing tool is not a chore)

Darkness 04-17-2005 02:04 PM

What strings do you have on there now?

clearvision 04-17-2005 02:04 PM

Do you play with a click track/metronome JoZ? Would be most useful if you told us the tempo you stuck with if you do :) cheers

EDIT : I second the patient...

I would love to have sober and aenima but I'll stick with what is given :)

The JoZ 04-17-2005 02:04 PM

Those songs in particular are not a chore either...

Although I will have to actually put a little effort into Jerk Off, simply because it's one of theirs I haven't actually learned yet

Edit 1: I have my bass tuned low ADGC. The strings are too thick to do DADG.

Edit 2: I have a composition program, which lets me take MIDI files of Tool songs, and play along with them, note for note, assuming the songs are done right. So I use whatever tempo the transcriber has decided on, and so far, they seem to be the correct tempos. This way, I can hear the guitar/bass/drum/vocals if added, yet it's not the real song. I can see what notes I am playing, time signatures, note values, etc...but still hear the song

ooooo the grudge, schism, stinkfist, or Eulogy.

The JoZ 04-17-2005 02:07 PM

So I'm doing.

Part of Me
Jerk Off
Sober
Stinkfist
Eulogy
Aenima
The Grudge
Schism

Can do, although some of them may not sound 100% like the original (Aenima, Schism)

clearvision 04-17-2005 02:08 PM

That's how i play, i learn this riffs on tooltabs. The use a midi file through Guitar pro 4, recognise the riffs and play along. After about 5 times through i can jam along to the proper mp3 for the riff-based songs.

Adam Jones is GOD 04-17-2005 02:10 PM

I can play most songs on their own without backing, but some i need the track playing in some form, or at least the beat.

I tend to pick up the cool riffs I like first with tool songs, then fill in the gaps. Im the typical must-learn-everything-but-leave-rytyhm-parts-till-last guitarist.

See, I've been playing cello for years, so I learn music by reading it.

I need sheet music to learn songs. Although I did figure out the Parabola riff without it.

Wow me to.

clearvision 04-17-2005 02:18 PM

I play tool stuff for my rythm playing...

I don't find the lead stuff too challenging...well i don't play it fully, like effects and everything. But I love the way adam uses dead notes and such, and his use of the Dmaj Barré, that's why i play tool most of the time.

Anyone else noticed how his solos are often similair? Example : he plays big bends on the 10/12 frets in sober and the same thing in swamp song....

I would kill for the oppotunity to be taught all over again, and be able to read music easily. My chance at having theory taught to me for free has gone (stupid bad high school decisions).

Self teaching is ok though I guess.

clearvision 04-17-2005 02:27 PM

I was never really 'taught theory' /says a grade 8 pianist...well that i can readily apply to guitar. I take music As level at the moment, and i took GCSE music too. But the courses deal with classical music and jazz. Any mention of a powerchord is blasphemous as a chord is meant to have 3 different notes in it. Almost like evolution to a christian  . I mainly picked up the theory i apply to guitar around the net, though i think if i sat and learned the notes on the neck/how to read off sheet music, i may be able to apply some knowledge to my guitar. I have guitar lessons atm, but i don't really learn too much...

.../point of rant was to encourage you to learn theory how you want. And explain that being able to harmonize a melody using the rules of western tonal harmony isn't gonna impact your gutiar playing too much. Obviously it helps because it explains what is going on, but i play guitar using shapes and it works for me :thumb:

Adam Jones is GOD 04-17-2005 02:31 PM

My old school is noted for being one of the top music colleges in teh country though. Local bands use it for recording and everything, and people who took the courses are so much better off for it.

However, seeing as I cant go down that road now, using internet articles helps. Its annoying that most of them have drastically different approaches, sometimes conflicting explanatins to certain things (modes being the worst).

Huber 04-17-2005 02:34 PM

Depending on what I'm playing I need sheet music. Simpler things don't call for it, but some things do. For instance, the quieter part in Ticks And Leeches, and the very loud part after. Soooooooo many ghost notes.

I never use tabs. Drum tabs are evil.

clearvision 04-17-2005 02:36 PM

Meh fcuk modes. I just rock out with the Pent/harmonic minor shalpes. Using the modes is just a way of overcomplicating guitar imo. I could use them if i sat down and learned the names of the neck. But they are pretty much a waste of time i think. They are just an outdated form of scale really. The melodic/harmonic minors are more modern and more easily used. But you don't really have to worry about the extra notes and can just stick witht he pent.

Kage 04-17-2005 03:30 PM

The backing tracks are going to be awesome, it's cool that you're doing that. Can't wait to play along with The Patient, Stinkfist, and The Grudge.

Clearvision, you'll never catch me :p.

It's true that modes do overcomplicate it, but in jazz they are used 90% of the time. I've been playing classical piano since I was five, and I got into jazz last year and it was weird because I never had to improvise before that. Luckily we're talking about Tool.

clearvision 04-17-2005 03:42 PM

That maybe true Kage, but only cause you spam this place up and i don't :p

/biterness

Where were you earlier :upset: i wanted the still mp3's, nm i found em now. Can you answer my post in the with teeth thread thnx :)

Modes are only used in jazz to give things that clashing sound associated with some modes, but jazz is waaay to technical. My theory is stick to the pentatonic, and if it needs a harmonic/melodic minor or blues not here or there throw it in. I haven't actually learned how to play the major scale on guitar  I just use my Minor shapes...

Dr. Jake Destructo 04-17-2005 03:47 PM

Yesterday, I finally took the plunge and purchased Opiate. Man, so far, it's almost as amazing as their other material that I've heard. (Ćnima and Lateralus) Hush has a few sweet riffs, Part of Me has a nice drumline. I'm only half way through listening to it, so I'll have more comments in 15 minutes.

I haven't posted in here for a while. How goes it, fools?
