^^Don't ask Lunch. He knows crap about the Who.
Face Dances is an even 7/10. No more, no less. |
Well I know he is a hardcore Who fan, just as I am a hardcore Zep fan. But I'll also take your advice on this one.
|
2006 is gonna be a good year =D
The Who, Radiohead, David Gilmour(still need to get tickets), Deep Purple and maybe Genesis :| Ow yes and RHCP :P there goes my money |
Hey Lunch, what would you rate Face Dances? I listened to it on vynal on my dad's record player a while ago. You Better You Bet is one of my favorite Who tracks, but I felt the rest of it to be really poppy. It would be cool if I had your opinion anyway...
I like that song a lot (you better you bet). I also like squeeze box :P |
I would give Face Dances 10/10 if it didn't have YBYB.....
Almost perfect POP reccord... |
I like that song a lot (you better you bet). I also like squeeze box :P
bleh. i hate squeeze box but i love the album its on. the who by numbers all the way! |
I've always liked Squeeze Box, perhaps because I'm extremely immature. The only Who albums I have are Live at Leeds, Then and Now(compilation), and Tommy. What is Quadrophenia like compared to their other work, sound-wise?

Great I recommend Quadrophnia and Who's Next :) |
See Me, Feel Me better at Woodstock than at Leeds? No way.
Kenney Jones gets a lot of blame for things he isn't responsible for.
live at leeds is a better version? hot damn I have to hear that, I think the woodstock see me feel me completly rocks. |
2006 is gonna be a good year =D
bleh. i hate squeeze box but i love the album its on. the who by numbers all the way!
Meh, I have to admit I like that song. Theres some better ones on the album (Dreaming From The Wast, anyone?) |
live at leeds is a better version? hot damn I have to hear that, I think the woodstock see me feel me completly rocks.
yeah man. woodstock's version is all out of tune. it hurts my ears sometimes. its good but its not great. live at leeds' version is great. dreaming from the waist has some of entwistle's best playing. |
yeah man. woodstock's version is all out of tune. it hurts my ears sometimes. its good but its not great. live at leeds' version is great.
dreaming from the waist has some of entwistle's best playing.
The LaL version is stunning. And Entwistle shines on all the extra bonus tracks they added on Who By Numbers especially Dreaming from the Waist.
^^Don't ask Lunch. He knows crap about the Who. I really like The Who By Numbers. Great underrated album. Coming after three classics and Live at Leeds I'm sure at the time it must of sounded average. But it's really The Who in stripped down form and rockin' along. And yes, Squeeze Box is a gas. I read that Townshend was horrified that the band chose Squeeze Box to record, and even more horrified when it became a top 5 hit in America. But it's a nice little ditty, anyway. And I agree with the above poster about the bonus tracks on the new releases of the album. Excellent live stuff there.
|
i like the bonus tracks on Who's Next almost more then the album itself.....Baby Don't You Do it, Water, Naked Eye, all supurb songs
|
I really like The Who By Numbers. Great underrated album.
I just got that album for Christmas. Its really great, and true its underrated. What I'm really impressed about is how the group channeled all thier problems (mostly Pete) onto record and how great it sounds.
I would give Face Dances 10/10 if it didn't have YBYB..... Almost perfect POP reccord...
Cool, although I think YBYB is really a POP song within itself. Recommendations from anyone - should I get that album? |
I was the original The Who By Numbers whore around here. Great album. I think my favorite song from it is How Many Friends. The live version of Dreaming From the Waist is much better than the studio version. I like Squeeze Box, but it's not an amazing song.
I don't have Facedances, but I've heard most of the songs and they're pretty good, but it's poppier than anything The Who did. I like the Woodstock version of See Me, Feel Me a lot, but still prefer LAL. Anyone who doesn't own LAL should go buy it. Now. Be sure to get the deluxe edition though with the Tommy performance. So much better than the regular release. I want a book on the Who. |
Doesn't The Who do the theme song for the CSI tv show?
|
Doesn't The Who do the theme song for the CSI tv show?
Well, they don't do it for it. The show uses a couple of Who songs for intros and end credits, though. |
I want a book on the Who.
Yea, I have two, no big deal.... The Dave Marsh biography (Before I Get Old) is good, especially if you want to hear someone constantly own the Who. He really cuts them no slack and at some parts it gets almost annoying, but overall it's very good and insightful. Then I got the coffee table Who book which is just cool. |
Doesn't The Who do the theme song for the CSI tv show?
If my memory serves me correct, the songs used to be (at different times) Baba O'Riley, Wont Get Fooled Again, and Who Are You. |

The production is spare, and it's not as, well, ok, it is a bit poppy. But the Who were never a stranger to pop, as much of pre Tommy era Who bears out well. Classics such as The Kids Are Alright, I'm a Boy, and I Can't Explain are among them. |
Yea, we can't forget about their whole "Pop art" thing.
|
Yea, we can't forget about their whole "Pop art" thing.
Pete was practically married to it. He was an art student, as you know. Took it quite seriously. Led to the whole mod thing, too. I think the band has always been the better for it. |
Hey guys, since you guys seem to know your stuff around here, can one of you please go to the Def Leppard thread and tell me if I'm doing anything wrong? I don't want to get into any trouble being so new, but my posting has come under fire there. I think I've expained myself pretty well and of course I don't expect some to be pleased with what I say, but I'm being told what I'm saying is inappropriate and wrong although it's no different then what some starred members have said. Can someone please explain this a little. Thanks.
|
I was actually going to post how funny it was that the Who fans were the ones saying how bad Def Leppard is.
Basically, I don't really see anything wrong with your posting. When John did a similar thing he doesn't get attacked for it because he has a high postcount and stars. People figure that since you just joined and have 22 posts that you don't know anything and are just being a douche for the hell of it. Clearly, that is not you. In the future, I just wouldn't go into threads and make statements like "Worst rock band ever", because as you've seen, people get angry over that. Even if you do justify it. I find it's better just to leave it alone. |
^^I'm 100% with Lunch on this one. As would most others be.
I'm not going to bring this sort of thing into this thread, but I can tell you your posting is not wrong or inappropriate in that thread. In this one it would not be tolerated and it would be pointless, but in that thread it is fine. Your explanations were also reasonable. I wouldn't of even done that much. This is the way MX goes with new people. It'll stop after awhile. Don't worry about it and keep posting. |

All I can say to you man is just be humble about everything. I'm about as new as you, so... just take it easy man... |
^^This is also sound advice. Just to make things more comfortable at first. We've all gone through it.
|
It's kind of like an initiation ritual. You have to earn your respect around these parts.
Back to the pop art thing, I was never really big into the idea (but he's Pete Townshend and can do anything he wants, so I don't have much beef here), but I don't feel that their music at the time reflected the "pop art" concept. Maybe at the time it did but when you look back on it just because they were releasing 3-minute songs doesn't mean it was all radio pop. Even on A Quick One, the songs are far from what I think of as 60's pop. The Sell Out album was the final mocking of the radio song idea (though also a tribute to the pirate radio in Britian). |
^^Well yeah, musically speaking the Who were never a pop band. They were always a rock band. It's just that it had been mentioned that Face Dances was "too pop" and that took me back a bit. Because pop has always been a thing they have done to one extent or other.
And you are right, I don't think Pete's art leanings influenced the Who's music very much. Or that the music conveyed a pop art concept. But I feel it lent the band a style and image that has served it well. It somehow set them apart from the average rock band and helped them become an above average rock band at the time. Or at least give them the air of one. Let's not forget the fashion and style that was so important to them at the time. Yes it was common mod, but the Who made more out of it. Got creative with it. Carved out there own niche with it. And I think they were and stil are somewhat different (in a good way) because of it. And it's Pete's time spent in art scholl that made this possible, IMO. |
Yea the fashion was definitely key, because as you said it gave the Who a stronger identity. And the "pop art" idea definitely didn't have a negative effect on the group.
|
Thanks for the advice, guys. I'll take it until I'm a little more common around here.
It's nice this thread is here. As a hardcore Who fan I should know better then clicking on anytihng that says Def Leppard, anyway. And yes, they were stylish lads, weren't they? (The Who, I mean). |
And yes, they were stylish lads, weren't they? (The Who, I mean).
Ha, yea, during this whole conversation I've been thinking about Pete in his British Flag blazer. |

Well yeah the Who never strayed that far from pop, and a lot of The Who Sell Out is psychadelic pop but Face Dances is a different sound compared to the arena rock sound they had developed in previous albums. From what I've heard from it, Facedances is better than the albums right before and after it (Who Are You and It's Hard). And Def Leppard blows. It's good to see some new intelligent users joining recently. We had a little bit of a dry spell. Edit- 3000th post. w00t. Party:chug: |
It would be great to keep this Who thread active.

Yes! And look at this pic. Quite the sharply dressed young lads. Oh, and I've just been called a troll in the Def Leppard thread by the TS. I'm not going to respond and just move on. It's silly. |

This thread really has been the highlight for me since coming to MX. And you are dead on when you say Face Dances is better then the albums which came before and after it. Although for the real deal, pick up Townshends solo albums of the same period. Empty Glass and All The Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes, respectively. I may feel a sputnik review coming on for one of those....
It would be great to keep this Who thread active.
I think it's always done well, Lunch. And you hold down the fort and keep it respected and respectable. Kudos for that. |
I've always counted on you to keep it alive, which you've done, obviously.
I really should actually own Face Dances. |
I've always counted on you to keep it alive, which you've done, obviously.
I really should actually own Face Dances.
Ah, thanks man. I do it out of the love for this band. And although it can get slow at times, it always comes back around. And with exciting new Who stuff going on this year, I'm sure we will see more discussion and perhaps even some healthy debate. And yes, Face Dances is worth owning. For "Another Tricky Day" alone. John also has a couple of nice contributions, and to tell you the truth it's not a bad album at all. It's actually good. In an okay sort of way. I'm sure you have heard it. Different for The Who at the time, and that might throw some people off. But all in all a good effort and listen. Although a couple of songs are dead clunkers. |
