Cravinov13 01-11-2006 06:02 PM

I've been listening to a lot of Death Doom Metal like old Katatonia and November's Doom.

Dried Muffin Remnants 01-11-2006 06:06 PM

Isis, Neurosis, Earlier Pelican, and The Melvins(?).

I love I love Celestial by Isis, but I can see why people believe Panopticon is the best. I just love sludgy stuff.

Poofy 666 01-11-2006 06:18 PM
I'd say CoC was classed as Stoner Metal (and risk a lynching from doomsters for using the phrase). Either way they're very good.
I always considered them more Crossover/Thrashy but w/e

Bartender 01-11-2006 06:27 PM

They change quite a bit.

Jondur 01-12-2006 04:13 AM
Jondur (or anyone who can help me)! Doomshine have recently grabbed my attention and I'm thinking of getting their full length album. Are you familiar with them and if yes what can you tell me?
I answered in the death heads thread but here it is again.

Doomshine are epic doom along the lines of Solitude Aeturnus. They are quite emotional compared to the likes of Solitude Aeturnus and Solstice. I must say I don't rate them that highly - I'd recommend the likes of Solstice, SA, While Heaven Wept, Isole or Scald (RUS) instead.

and I replied in Death Heads as well ;)

heh, I havent heard of these bands, thank you, your recommendations rule :D
Yeah dude, I feel like that with Kyuss, I haven't got round to trying it yet

Electric Wizard
Kyuss
Melvins

Top 3 heavy bands of my month ;)
I've been loving Electric Wizard and Melvins this month too. I haven't got around to getting any Kyuss yet but the tracks I've heard are killer (their vocalist is one of the best!).

I've been trying to get some Bongzilla, the guitar tone is absolutely monolithic.

Jondur 01-18-2006 05:59 AM

Can't believe I haven't mentioned BLOODFARMERS in this thread yet! Well that's rectified that omission - check out their eponymous album.

Stoic 01-18-2006 06:06 AM

/notes down Bloodfarmers...

hmm...I listened to some random Electric Wizard songs and really liked them. What is the general attitude towards them in the stoner world and which album is supposed to be their best?

EDIT

Bloodfarmers are not listed in MA, what genre exactly are they?

Only Dopethrone by Electric Wizard is worth hearing

Stoic 01-18-2006 05:20 PM

^Downloaded a couple of songs but I find the effect used on vocals quite irritating :(

What do you think of Grand Magus and Sleep?

Dark_Hero 01-18-2006 05:26 PM

I'm not sure if I posted my favorite stoner/doom bands yet, but here they are.

High on Fire, Bongzilla, Soilent Green, Black Sabbath, Saint Vitus, Clutch, Acid Bath, Blessing the Hogs, Zeke, Sleep, Electric Wizard, Melvins, Neurosis, Thrones, Buried at Sea, Isis, Reverend Bizarre, Sunn 0))), Khanate, Coffins, Eyehategod, Fistula, Jesu, YOB, Esoteric, etc.

Zeke is about as far from Doom as you can get.

Lies, Electric Wizard and Come My Fanatics are both great. We Live is decent.

On a side note, I finally heard The River today, killer stuff, respect to you, Jon.

I really enjoy Supercoven, but I haven't heard Dopethrone, so I don't know how they compare.

It's called stoner metal. I also forgot to mention Dystopia.

He lies! Well not like I've got the other albums or anything, but the songs I've heard are awesome. A lot of people think Come My Fanatics... or We Live are better than Dopethrone.

Oh and to the fellow that said the vocal effect is annoying, Dopethrone and We Live are the only ones with that effect. He sounds so much worse with the un-distorted vocals! I think the effect adds to the character of Dopethrone but hey, whatever blows your whistle.

/pimps his review of Dopethrone on SputnikMusic

EDIT: Ok, maybe not. I don't think I'll be writing any more reviews/band profiles from now on.

UpperDecker 01-19-2006 07:00 AM

Sorry for asking this but what exactly is doom metal? what are the characteristics of it?

tehnick 01-19-2006 07:39 AM

Music that has characteristics of something.......doom-like.

/doesn't know.

Do you mean Electric Wizard or Blood farmers? I never said Dopethrone was good! I don't rate EW at all.

Never heard either. I tend to ignore anything that might even stray into stoner territory!

 alright, alright! Grand Magus however, are not stoner ;)

Bartender 01-19-2006 01:18 PM

Grand Magus are a lot of fun, from what I've heard. Been meaning to get an album for some time now.
Sorry for asking this but what exactly is doom metal? what are the characteristics of it?
This has been explained a few times throughout the thread - quite recently and frequently, I think - so you could find out what it is (along with a whole load of recommendations) by just reading through.

they're doom (stoner)

Vortigon 01-20-2006 10:14 AM

Yeah, anybody with sense already knows about, and is going to that tour.

A_Guy 01-22-2006 11:30 PM

Ok, my friend was telling me that the hidden track on Kyuss' ...And The Circus Leaves Town is dedicated to Kurt Cobain, what's the name of it and lyrics? I've listened to it, I just don't know what it's called.

Jondur 01-27-2006 08:54 AM

Not been any mention of YOB in here. Any thoughts? Not really my cup of tea but I'll admit as far as extremely nasty slow metal goes - it doesn't get much more nasty or slow!

Werny 01-27-2006 09:26 AM
weird, I didnt see any electric wizard on sputnik
I got carried away with my review and band profile so they deleted them.

Well that's what I think anyway. I don't know, I just went there and it was gone.

I missed out on seeing Electric Wizard and Pod People, now I find EW are playing with Cathedral and Grand Magus over in Europe. God dammit.

Oh... I got Bongzilla's Amerijuanican. It's more on the fuzzed-out, 70's rock style but hey, that's what makes it so darn awesome. Heck, on Weedy Woman the drummer does one of those fast beats that no one's done since the early 70's (...I think). It's great, I'm tempted to review it.

They're okay. By which I mean, I've got The Illusion of Motion, and it's okay. Generally though I prefer something with a good, solid riff.

EDIT: Actually, listening to it again, I like it more than I thought I did. Still nothing really better than just "good", though.

Aye, that's the one I've got. I was just listening to "Exorcism of the Host" from that album and I was struck by what a great riff it's got. I just wish there was another one to go with it!

Good but too monotonous.

Did none of you see that thread about Pentagram? Can I not rely on anyone to keep the doom going while I'm away?!

Bartender 02-09-2006 08:48 AM

Creozoth. A side-project of some members of Candelmass, though supposedly closer to just traditional heavy metal than doom, and apparently quite good despite the silly name.

So, anyone know anything about them?

Jondur 02-09-2006 09:16 AM

I heard Lars is doing a side project. Can't tell you any more I'm afraid - I guess all we know for sure is that the solos will be good!

I sent you an email btw... did you get it?

Bartender 02-09-2006 09:40 AM

I hadn't checked my inbox for a couple of days, so I hadn't noticed, but I have got it, yeah. Thanks.

Oh. Silly old me and my paranoia.

...Aren't Creozoth supposed to be power metal?

Speaking of the fellows from Candlemass, I got their self-titled release. There's some quality riffage right there. Too bad the lyrics are laughably cheesy, the vocals are horrid (I've never been a fan of Messiah), the drumming is boring and the riffs occasionally get repetitive. Still a decent album, somehow.

Bartender 02-10-2006 07:00 AM

I don't know, only read the one review. I suppose the reviewer could have been an idiot.
