Maybe a little younger, but good thinking
That kid from the Sixth Sense!

Or maybe Dakota Fanning.

Could work. :p

Haha, a little too young. And they just aren't cool enough.
Haha, a little too young. And they just aren't cool enough.
Is anyone cool enough to play Keith Moon?

Lunch 10-03-2005 03:42 PM

Well true, but they aren't even in the same ballpark.

BludgeonySteve 11-03-2005 08:56 PM

The replacement for Keith Moon was pretty good. I can't remember who is was, though :(. Any who heads know?

Kenny Jones, who formerly played with the Faces.

First time around after Moon died it was Kenny Jones of the Small Faces. This time around it is Zak Starkey, Ringo Starr's son. Kenny was given a bit of a hard time by fans, critics, and Roger. Those were big shoes to fill. But Zak is doing just fine. I suppose it also helps that so many years have passed since Moon's death. Kenny is actually a really good drummer. It was just not his time, I guess.

BludgeonySteve 11-03-2005 11:02 PM

Whoever drummed for them at Live 8 was awesome.

PinkFreud 11-03-2005 11:10 PM

jones' style was pretty different than moon's. starkey does a great job.

Lunch 11-04-2005 01:40 PM

Kenney Jones is unfairly underrated by Who fans, just because he was trying to do the impossible. With the (Small) Faces though, he was solid and did some new things in a time when rock drumming was really developing.

wanderer 11-05-2005 04:44 AM

zak can play few more fills if he wants but fact remais that when you listen boots from Kenney era they all blow way everything that they have done with Zak.
They sounded and played better with Kenney, no contest what so ever.

Ah man, I had no idea they were coming out with this. And very reasonably priced. I'm really excited about the Quadrophenia disc, as you can imagine. I have an old VHS copy of the Tommy disc. It's good, but I could live without the guest performers. They kind of cheese it up. Townshend plays only acoustic guitar until the encores because of his hearing problems, but he really bangs the crap out of it. He plays really agressively. And loud. The guitar player they brought with them does a good job, I supppose . But he's relegated to playing in the shadows. It's very much Townshends show.

I was hoping they would release something from the Quadrophenia tour of several years ago, and here it is. I went to a show at the L.A. Forum and was bitterly disappointed. Our seats were kind of high up (but not that high) and the volume was very low. For a concert at least. Low enough that I could hear the guy behind me talk the entire time at normal volume. I had to tell him to be quiet several times. A-hole. And I couldn't really hear Roger, either. If you didn't know the lyrics, you weren't going to clearly hear them from where I was sitting, that's for sure. The Forum always sucked for gigs. I only went because it was the Who and Quadrophenia. Hoped for the best, and got the worst. I figure the volume was low because if you turn it up at the Forum the whole thing goes to hell. So it was the lesser of two evils, I suppose. Which just goes to show how bad it really is.

Guest for the Quad show I went to included Gary Glitter and Billy Idol, among a couple of others. But they really only played small roles. It wasn't like the Tommy gig. They bring GS scooters out on stage and it's a bit flashy. And even though I couldn't hear Rog and the volume was low, it seemed to be a good show. This DVD should make up for a lot.

Thanks for the tip, Lunch. :)

Lunch 11-06-2005 09:10 AM

I'm pretty excited about it.

If it's Who, it's worth owning.

robo2448 11-06-2005 09:40 AM

I don't know if I'll get the Who DVD. Definitely not right away, but probably eventually. I still need The Kids Are Alright and Isle of Wright first. Kenney Jones does get a lot of hate from Who fans, including me. He did his best to replace Moon, but Moon was just impossible to replace.

np- The Real Me

One of my top 5 Who songs for sure.

Lunch 11-06-2005 09:42 AM

Even without seeing the new Dvd I'd strongly recommend TKAA and IoW first.

The new DVD is like a Who Ensemble. They have a horn section, back up singers, percussionist, two keyboard players, I believe, and an additional guitarist. So it's a big band. For the Quad tour they didn't even promote it as the Who, I remember. They had an ad that said "Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, John Entwhistle, Performing The Who's Quadrophenia". Or something like that? They quickly changed it to "The Who" though, because ticket sales were slow.

So yeah, if you don't have the essential Who stuff like TKAA or IoW, best to start with one of those first, as Lunch suggests.

Lunch 11-06-2005 06:51 PM

John, do you have the Deluxe Edition of Who's Next (the two disc one)? I figured I should try to get a hold of it for the live disc.

I don't have that, Lunch. I have Who's Next on vinyl and also the standard edition on MusicMatch. I looked on my music service (allofmp3.com) and strangely enough they have much of the Who's catalogue, including everything from Tommy through It's Hard, but no Who's Next whatsoever? I don't know what that's all about. Sorry I can't be of more help. If they had it I would of picked it up and sent it to you. Good luck finding it.

Maggot Dream 11-06-2005 07:52 PM

I heard about that DVD a while ago, I didn't know that the dates for the tours were so recent. I'll probably pick it up, but I doubt if it can beat TKAA.

I've actually seen it in stores before, the problem is that it runs about $25 and I already have Who's Next. But I would like to have any live Who that's available, especially some from 1971.

I don't think anyone is expecting it to, and if you are then you probably shouldn't. Who w/o Moon<<<<Who w/ Moon.

Being one of the biggest Who fans I feel compelled to point out some minor, obscure details that nobody seems to know or write down.

Roger Daltry was actually the Detours' guitarist at the time Entwistle joined.

Townshend originally saw Keith Richards doing 'the windmill' and copyed him, Richards doesn't remember ever doing it.

The Who did not want to play at Monterey or Woodstock (manager Kit Lambert signed a contract). The Woodstock crew also threatened to tell the anxious crowd the Who refused to play, causing a riot.

Finally, to all you people who say 'Teenage Wasteland' is a song: **** YOU! It's called Baba O'Riley.

(Baba O'Riley comes from Meher Baba, Townshends religious guru, and Terry Riley, a pioneer in synthesized music)

You don't say! Gee, we didn't know any of that here at the Who board. Lunch, you hear about this? It's not called "Teenage Wasteland?" WTF? And that windmill thing? Who knew.

Here's another little known fact. John Entwhistle is dead! Can you believe it? It's quite the shocker, I know. Just wanted to clue you all in.

EDIT: Nice user title, btw. Welcome to the Who board. :)

Here is an excerpt from Pete's Journal dated November 5. He's been posting somewhat regularly at his website as of late and has been putting up chapters of a recent book he has written/is working on/completed. I'm not sure which? There is also a new presentation on "Who TV" that one Rachel Fuller puts on. Apparently it airs at Pete's site at 5:00pm (Birt time) every Wendsday. I will post other interesting things I might find at the site from time to time.

This is just Pete being Pete. He's quite the wanker. Wouldn't have him any other way. I wonder how he feels about message boards.

Cunts!

Fireworks. On Rachel's IN THE ATTIC on Thursday she said one shouldn't wander into a Who Chat Room unprepared. Quite what she was doing there is a question. But I said, they are all 'cunts' in those Chat Rooms.

I was joking. But when I think about it, it was a hurtful joke. Why?

I think that in chat rooms we all become like the press. We push our own agendas, we hide behind our qwerty keyboards, and we allow the feeling of the moment to impose itself on our chosen subject. In Who chat rooms that would seem to be the Who. Someone wakes up with a headache: Pete is an arsehole because he won't work hard enough etc. Next day they wake up feeling better: Pete is OK because he can do what he likes we love him unconditionally.

I really was joking. I don't go into chat rooms. But I was surprised by my own vehemence and so were some chat room 'fans' who have written to me to complain, or to make their position (and their rights to free speech) plain.

Why am I angry about what goes on in chat rooms? Not because I am bullied there, or that fans have ideas about what I should or should not do. It is because when I set up the web site it had a Who Chat Room. Within a few weeks it was being 'flamed' by people who it now emerges ran web sites of their own. Because of who I am I cannot allow the kind of comments that are permissable on sites unrelated to me in a direct way. People were attacking each other, hiding behind false names. We tried to 'mediate' comments for a while, but it is absurd to do that in a free society.

We closed the Chat Room here. Others flourished as a result. That's good. But I suppose I do still have a bit of a resentment that I spent thousands of dollars setting up an arena for Who fans to talk to each other and to me, and it became a battle field. How great is it that today we can set up a Blog for nothing and it becomes an instant Chat Room in a way.

I have to say that the word 'cunt' is a joke word here. It is derogatory, but was truly meant affectionately in this context. I often say: 'We are all cunts!' Meaning we are all of us real, flawed, hopeful, stupid, lost and gorgeous.

I promise you Chat Room people, I cherish you, I depend on you, I love you, I need you, I rely on you, and I never listen to a word you say.

Heh, that's amusing. "Who the hell are Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend and John Entwhistle?"

Bloody non-fans.

Lunch 11-07-2005 09:10 PM

They probably thought it was some cover band doing Quadrophenia. Losers.

Yea John, that's pretty typical Pete. Good ol' Pete.

Lunch 11-08-2005 06:57 PM

I picked up the new Dvd today and started watching it. Tommy was struggling a bit but was interesting and overall pretty good. I only watched the first few songs.
