and people wonder why rock fans...watever type you are get a bad name. Yeah many of us are open minded and give reasoned opinions...but there are sum who are hate mongerers and thats sad cos thats all the commercial world sees of us YOU'RE GIVING US ALL A BAD NAME AND GIVING PEOPLE AN EXCUSE TO HIT OUT AT US ALL.
Personally I see real rap as an artform that I dont personally appreciate, I wont bad mouth it cos i dont like it personally cos thats closed minded, just like they say metal is all noise and shouting (I SHOULD KNOW, I GET IT IN THE NECK FROM MY GF) well thats my rant for today, open your minds. please!
I didn't read the whole thread, but I love Rap, and I don't know if anyone in this thread is from the bay area, so I got some recommendations. Almost everything I listen to is Underground bay area rap, with the exception of a few:

Mac Dre (R.I.P.)
MC Eiht
Rappin 4 Tay

Probably a few other too, trying to think of all my CD's.
Out of those I only really like Blackalicious, Dr Octagon, Del, Brotha Lynch Hung and Living Legends.

Still, when talking Bay, you should always mention Souls Of Mischief (and the rest of Hiero), Planet Asia, and Zion I.

Hell, I'm surprised you didn't mention Ant Banks and Too $hort, although I got out of that kind of stuff ages ago.
I will never like rap. I dont see any talent in telling rhymes fast which contain the guy having sex and doing drugs and getting pi$$ed. Theyre all good but why keep speaking to us about it ?
Black metal heads liking Bay area gangster rap is a beautiful sight. Not that I like gangster rap - stopped listening to it when I turned 14 or something. This is just awesome.

Ive heard some good rap songs, but 99% of all rap is just lame. I heard some song with this guy singing aobut how cool his 'ice' is...LAME.
Here is a small portion of lyrics from the previously mentioned song:

"I got so many rocks, on my chain and watch
I know I'm da ****, my chain hang down to my dick
I know I'm da bomb, just look at my charms
I know I'm da ****, my chain hang down to my dick"

This is just one example of bad rap lyrics, but these are pretty similar to every other rap song.

I used to be a huge fan of rap, mostly early stuff like Run-DMC (they got some pretty cool guitar parts...) and gangsta stuff like 2pac, ice cube, etc. I don't listen to it anymore though. I think i became obsessed with rock when i started playing guitar. I think people should listen to rap once in a while, as with every other kind of music. Rap has actually really helped me write songs and poetry, and it gives people a good feel for rythms and beats. i'd still pick rock over rap any day, though.

it so pisses me off when ppl are so eagerly prepared to generalise, stereotype and wildly make assumption.
i appreciate rap music for what it is though i listen to mostly metal/indie.
to throw wild percentages is lame..in whose opinion is 99% of rap lame? is that a fact? a correlated figure? i think not...and to say those lyrics are similar to pretty much every rap song is new to me...such wild assumptions cannot be backed.
I've seen it a million times.

Somebody mentions rap, and about 20 comments follow with people saying how much they hate it, and how it isn't music. They claim that is just about money, killing, hoes, etc.

I can't really get angry with these people, for the sole reason that the radio is full of that bullshit. Someone will usually come along and say, "The underground has much better stuff." But without actually hearing some good rap, statements like that don't accomplish much.

So all I ask is that everyone gives rap an honest listen. If you like it, great, if not, then at least you have an educated opinion on it.

To understand rap, you need to know a little about the origin.

Rap is part of the hip hop culture, which also includes graffiti and break dancing. It came out of the South Bronx in the late seventies, stemming from funk and disco. It emerged as a form of self expression for the black and hispanic community in New York. Conditions in these neighberhoods were poor, and the way the people expressed this was through rap. Crews started to form, to give members identity, and this is deeply rooted in the hip hop culture.

Early rap recordings:

* Sugarhill Gang - Rappers Delight
