Mojo Nixon-The ballad of country Dick
It starts out with a very quiet electric guitar and vocals in the intro in which he sings “Country Dick was a man, big as the Rio Grande. His voice did boom like thunder”. Then it kicks into an upbeat verse. After the first verse there is a guitar solo, it’s pretty much your standard country guitar solo, nothing special. After the second verse comes another solo, this one is quite impressive and more rockish. For the bridge they quiet everything except the drums, this is the best part of the song for me. They close it out with some nice “whoas” and it leads into one more chorus. It’s quite a bit different from the Folk-Punk I’ve listened to before. The vocals are a little annoying to me, but the music is very energetic and the lyrics are great. Other than the vocals (which aren’t horrible), this song is right up my alley. It’s very good folk-punk and has awesome lyrics. I’ll definitely be checking out more of this band. 8/10 Recommendations Against Me!-Searching for a former clarity (Pop-punk) Planes Mistaken For Stars-Copper and stars (Rock-punk? The song starts with some quiet cymbals and a pretty cool riff before the music kicks in properly. It's got a pretty cool rhythm to it. When the vocals kick-in the music takes a turn for the ska but it's not explicitly ska. You might miss it if you weren't listening carefully. The vocals are fairly generic and inoffensive. The chorus is a lot better than the verses musically. The rock and punk sections were a lot better than the ska sections. This song almost has a rockabilly feel in sectionsm which is cool. After the chorus there's a bridge with a pretty cool drumbeat which goes back in to more ska. At one point there's a bit of a needless solo that's a bit annoying. After another chorus it goes into a trippy reggae section to finish the song. This song was alright. It had some cool sections but it felt slightly disjointed as if they'd tried to cram several songs into one. 7/10 Choose from: Gay Cowboys In Bondage - Domestic Battlefield (Punk) Berurier Noir - La Marche Funebre De La Jeunesse Suicidare (Punk) The Dwarves - Everybodies Girl (Punk) The Nuns - Wild (Punk) Soulseek: sketchyjoe Gmail: sketchyjoe |

First of all, I dont know where you get all these bands from Joe, but I can honestly say that every song you've recommended I have enjoyed and this one was no different. I never heard this band and didn't know what to expect and to be honest I wasnt blown away. It sounded just like another punk rock song. I liked the song, it has a good guitar going on and put that together with the fast paced drums its a good song. The lyrics seem a little childish but that doesnt matter the song itself was catchy. I also like the part at the end where the girl goes "Eww your creepy" (my favorite part in the song.) So ill have to give the song a 7/10 because it was nothing remarkable. I'm not as familiar with The Specials stuff after their self-titled. This song is from their second lounge-music infused album More Specials so I thought I'd check it out. The song starts with Neville staples shouting "Warning! Warning! Nuclear attack!" then some war noises and the music builds up into a jumpy ska beat with a great bassline and a cool melody from some what sounds like a harmonica. It's got a really spooky feel to it. Especially when the horns come-in. Throughout this section Neville Staples is toasting about Nuclear war. You wouldn't think a ska song could evoke images of a nuclear wasteland but the Specials specialise in atmospheric music as they proved with Ghost Town. I can't emphasise how cool the horns are in this section. At about 1:10 it builds up again into Terry Hall's disinterested vocals which fit the song well. After a brief verse and chorus there's another build-up then what could be described as a demented guitar solo before more horns. Then there's another verse. Terry Hall's deadpan vocals contrast perfectly with the apocalyptic music filled with random explosions and strange noises in the background. This is a great Specials song in the vein of their classic Ghost Town. If you like ska in any way you have to listen to The Specials and this song. 10/10 Choose from: Gay Cowboys In Bondage - Domestic Battlefield (Punk) Berurier Noir - La Marche Funebre De La Jeunesse Suicidare (Punk) The Nuns - Wild (Punk) Gorilla Biscuits - Start Today (Hardcore Punk) All Girl Summer Fun Band - Grizzly Bear (Power-pop) Soulseek: sketchyjoe Gmail: sketchyjoe |

I really like the guitar intro , everything else seems simple. Its a very catchy song, But oh my, Annoying Vocals and the lyrics dont make it anybetter. Overall nothing stands out musically. But the more I listen to it, the more it grows on me. It has cool guitar riffs, but nothing amazing. not the best drumming in the world, A pretty averge band at best. 5/10 New Johnstones Oh My! This sounds like one of those acoustic songs that you hear in a depressing montage in programmes like The OC when the main character's parents have cut their allowance down to just $400 a week or something like that. This song is just bland. Take any inoffensive acoustic song with downbeat lyrics and dual vocals with one guy sounding whiny and the other depressed and you've got this song. There is not a single stand-out thing about it. You can see the chord changes coming a mile off and the next line is so obvious it's standing in ten foot tall neon lights. This song goes on far too long for such a boring song. There's no real reason to hate this song but there's no real reason to like it either. It's just meh. 3/10 Choose from: Gay Cowboys In Bondage - Domestic Battlefield (Punk) Berurier Noir - La Marche Funebre De La Jeunesse Suicidare (Punk) The Two Gallants - Fail Hard to Regain (Folk-punk) The Nuns - Wild (Punk) Gorilla Biscuits - Start Today (Hardcore Punk) Soulseek: sketchyjoe Gmail: sketchyjoe |
Gorilla Biscuits - Start Today
This is the first Gorilla Biscuits song I've ever heard. It starts out with a guitar intro that's very quiet and sounds like it's off in the distance, then fades away. Then the same riff comes back louder and cleaner. It's a fairly straightforward but good riff. There is some very nice bass with in this song, about 0:10 in the guitar stops for a little bass solo. I like the singers voice, but not so much the tempo in which he is singing. The lyrics seem ok, nothing special but not bad. At 1:18 they do a very nice almost metal-ish breakdown, probably the best part of the song. Which then leads into what sounds like a Harmonica solo (I'm probably wrong) that oddly enough fits the song quite well. Is goes back into one last final chorus. Overall it was a good song, good musicianship, good vocals. But the lyrics didn't seem to grab my attention and it seemed to be lacking something, maybe more energy or speed? I'll give it a 7/10 Choose from: Evil Robot Is-Sea Saw(ing) (Metal-ish/Emo-ish/Folk Punk) The Briggs-3rd World War (Pop-Punk/Oi!) Well, I was already an Against Me! fan, but I've never heard this song, so I thought I'd give it a shot. This song isn't as catchy as some of their other songs, but it however does make it a bad song. The song obviously has a lot of meaning to it. It is based around a person slowly dying on a hospital bed from a disease. The drums play a simple beat through the whole song and the guitar only strums once on the first beat of each measure. Overall the song is very choppy, and does not flow well. I think they could've done a better job at making song slow, but I liked the lyrics a lot. Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution - "Here's To Life"
It starts out with a slow, pretty catchy intro with just the guitar and drums, it's pretty cool too. After about five seconds, the horns and everything come in. It gets more upbeat, still pretty catchy and fun to listen to. It has a swing influence, with just a bit more ska into it. You probably could swing dance to this song. After a little bit more, the vocals come it, and the horns tone down for a bit. The vocals suit the song pretty well, and I like them alot, even though I can't understand some of them. I guess they're about drinking. A few times through the verse, it slows down. The drums are kind of funkish, and the horns maintain a ska swing beat. After a little instrumental, the chorus comes, with back up vocals that are pretty loud, it's close to being an anthem which everyone sings alot too. After the chorus, a horn(I don't know which one) has a small solo. It stops, then goes into a the beginning of another verse. The intro to the verse is different. I like a band that changes the song alot, and barely repeats anything. So far I'm enjoying every bit of it. The verse ends, and repeats an instrumental, then slows down again, and quickly regains an upbeat sound, until it goes back into the chorus. After the second chorus, the song slows down and stays that way, with different instrumets have small duets and such over a drum beat. It repeats the intrumental again, then it stops.. and goes into a piano. I don't like this part at all, doesn't fit in with the song, and it's not as happy or upbeat. After the piano, there's some bongos(?) and an acoustic guitar, with soft singing. Still don't like it. I'm glad they tried a change of pace, but they should've just left it out. A bit emoish, but not. It goes on for a little bit, then the piano comes in again. Then they pick back up into the instrumental with their upbeat rhythm. The beat slows down, but there's still no singing. A few moments pass.. they go into a verse, and end it differently, with the guy screaming. I don't like the yelling on this song. After that, it ends. Loved the first half, the second half wasn't all that great. 6/10 Recommend: Electric Frankenstein - "High-Voltage" (Rock, with punk edges) The Cramps - "Surfin' Dead" (Rockabilly) The Replacements - "Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out" (80's Hardcore, but a bit more rockish?) The Cramps - Surfin' Dead
The song opens with a simple drum piece, and someone says something which is really low, and I didn't quiet catch. About 15 minutes in, the rest of the band come in, with a very basic rock riff progression. Very 1950's. Kind of reminds me of one of those songs they used to play at elementary school sock-hops, but lyrically much more morbid. Almost two minutes in there is a short guitar solo, and then everything but the drums/vocals cut out. After a little bridge, the guitar comes back softly, and starts to buildup, and returns to the original riff arond 3:20. Well, I've always liked the Cramps - Human Fly is a great song, and the 'Live at the Napa State Institutue' is freakin' hilarious - and overall the song lived up to my expectations. Very basic structure, but thats characteristic of them, and doesn;t hurt the song. 8/10 Choices Kubla Khan - Revolution II (60's Garage Rock) Fire - Father's Name Was Dad (Psych) Aguaturbia - Carmesi Y Trébol (Light Chilean Psych) hxxp://s10.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=19VN9KND4LCKE3PVMFKXW43PNJ ; IM me (bloodanguts1) if you just want one. |

It starts off with a small guitar intro, it sounds like a semi old song. Like the Beatles, but slower, and not as happy, with a small psychedelic twist? It has a basic guitar riff once the drums come in. It quickly goes into a chorus, and the vocals come in. Yea, it still sounds like some pre-Beatles kind of song, but not exactly. After the verse, it goes into the chorus. Actually, this song kind of reminds me of the early Talking Heads, meeting the Beatles. For some, odd, apparent reason. I don't really even listen to either band that much. Even though I kinda like it. Definately not my kind of music though. After the chorus, it goes into another verse. Then the chorus.. Very simple song writing. Not much of a song. But it's catchy. This is gonna be stuck in my head awhile.. They repeat the intro riff, but has all the instruments behind it. It goes into a verse, then goes in a chorus.. Once again, it's really simple. Overall, it wasn't really something I'd listen to over and over again. It's like the if the Beatles didn't discover the poppy side of them yet. 5/10 Recommended Songs: Showcase Showdown - "Tonight, Tonight" (Faster '77 Punk/Streetish) Electric Frankenstein - "Speed Girl" (Rock and roll with punk/metalish edges) Radio Birdman - "Murder City Nights" (Polished Rock and Roll with a slight Rockabilly feel) I have no idea. :) Joe Strummer & the Mescaleros - "X-Ray Style" (Uhh... The song opens with a rough guitar just kinda jamming, which then leads into a standard fuzzy chord progression, with a simple drum beat. The usualy '70's style, although less refined then most of the stuff coming out of the UK (these guys are Aussies if I recall right). Short little guitar solo around 1 1/2 minutes in. This leads into a brief rehash of the chorus, and the song ends. Rather short. Against Me - Joy (Searching for a former Clarity Version)
Well I decided to do Joy, since I've listened to Disorder already and I just plain refuse to listen to rap. Sorry, I just wouldn't give it a fair review. And since the new Against Me! has just come out, this choice seems to be the best. I won't lie, I heard this song on the stolen demo, but I can't say I gave it a listen on Searching for a Former Clarity. So, the intro starts off with a basic chord structure, fairly simple. It sounds like it's D, Against Me! seem to love that chord. Tom's voice comes in at about 35 seconds. The same exact chord structure repeats throughout the whole song, but there's a certain quality in the simplicity of it. This song would fit perfectly into As the Eternal Cowboy. I also heard a little melody lined played right in the middle of the song for maybe 15 seconds. I thought it was a clever little fill in and it gives the song a little more depth. All they would have to take out is that annoying background noise you hear in the beginning. It sort of defies the first line "All is quiet, except for this song." WRONG TOM. Didn't you notice that god forsaken humming in the beginning? But compared to the rest of the album (which isn't their best effort ever), this song stands out among the, dare I say, crap. I give it 8/10 omnibuss. This is a very chilled-out relaxed song. The music is good and manages to stop itself slipping into generic indie stuff. The vocalist (I think it's John Samson from Propagandhi) has a good voice but it does border on whiny at times but the back-up vocals are used to great effect. The guitar work is very cool throughout this song, very laidback and mellow like the rest of the song. This song seems to finish quite quickly despite being 3 minutes long. It's one of those songs that just seems to wash over you. You'd have to be in the right mood to enjoy this song or alternatively, concentrate on this song and it will put you in the right mood to listen to it. A simple, chilled-out enjoyable indie-pop song. 7/10 Choose from: Gay Cowboys In Bondage - Domestic Battlefield (Punk) Berurier Noir - La Marche Funebre De La Jeunesse Suicidare (Punk) The Nuns - Wild (Punk) Bob Dylan - Tangled Up In Blue (Folk) The Two Gallants - Fail Hard to Regain (Folk-punk) Soulseek: sketchyjoe Gmail: sketchyjoe |
Bob Dylan - Tangled Up in Blue
Song starts off with a nice, melodic guitar riff, with some light drums in the backround. Dylan's voice is a little rough, but he still is a good singer. There really doesn't seem to be much variation in the riff, except for a little crescendo when ever he comes up to saying the title, and I think a few more parts have been slowly added in, such as another guitar, and a bit more added onto the drum part. Finally about 5 minutes in, a harmonica solo comes in - a pretty good one, which then ends the song. Well, I liked the riff in the song, but it was too long. If it was maybe a 2.5-3 minute song, it would be good, but it just got to repetative. Still well done though. 6/10. This song starts off quitely with just the guitar and drums before the bass and then more guitar comes in. It's a pretty standard way of strating a song but it works well. The riff is similarly simple and similarly effective. The vocals come-in. They're pretty standard light indie-ish vocals. They remind of David Gray in parts. This is not a good thing. As the song progresses however they get more emotional and less dirge-like which is good. The only real changes in the music from the main riff are a brief pause and some drum fills but it manages to avoid become boring as it's pulled off well and doesn't feel that repetitive despite it's 3 minute length. All in all it's a fairly standard well-executed indie/punk song. 7/10 Choose from: Gay Cowboys In Bondage - Domestic Battlefield (Punk) Berurier Noir - La Marche Funebre De La Jeunesse Suicidare (Punk) The Nuns - Wild (Punk) The Two Gallants - Fail Hard to Regain (Folk-punk) MC Hawking - UFT For The MC (Punk) Soulseek: sketchyjoe Gmail: sketchyjoe |

Well. I must say the title of this band caught my attention. I was thinking this band was going to be a bit awkward, because of the unusual name. I was pretty much wrong. It's not too bad, but you probably won't hear too much from them in the future anytime soon. It starts off with some quote, with the guy saying all he wants to do is play Rock and Roll. Hell yea. It begins with a chord then some feedback on the guitar. After a little bit, the entire band comes in. The guitar riffs are like the Ramones, but not as poppy sounding. When the vocals come in, it sounds like a teenager, or just a young adult with a childish-voice. It's slightly annoying, but I'm kind of used to it already. The verse goes right in to the chorus, which isn't all that great. The kid claims he has his own Domestic Battlefield, but I don't know what the rest is about. Over the verse, there is a small guitar riff that's kind of cool, but doesn't sound that great with this semi-low recording. After the next chorus, a guitar solo comes in that sounds fun, but I don't know if I would consider it talented. But I'm not a guitarist, so I wouldn't know. The solo goes right into another verse, then the chorus, then it ends. Simple song structure. It just sounds like some kids wanted to form a band to play. There not bad, but there not too good. 5.5/10 Recommended Songs: Showcase Showdown - "Tonight, Tonight" (Fast '77 Punk) Radio Birdman - "Murder City Nights" (Rock and roll, Rockabilly twist) The Skulls - "Aye Aye Aye!" This song has a really cheesy intro with a couple of big drum beats leading into a big riff. The singer says "Alright Now, Hit It!" and the other instruments kick-in. It may be cheesy but it's also well done. The singer has quite a distinctive voiec. It reminds me of Glenn Danzig's in parts. The lyrics are quite puerile (bout having sex with a prostitute) and may seem entertaining to a 13-year old but the vocals work well with the simple music. The chorus is quite anthemic. The music retains the same up-tempo hard-rocking feel for most of the song. There's a brief mellow section at about 3:10 that builds back-up into the harder music before a brief pause, and the big riff that has popped up throughout the song comes back-in until the end of the song. This song was well-done but fairly-predictable. The lyrics were bad, the vocals were okay. I enjoyed the song in parts but probably wouldn't check out an album. 6/10 Choose from: The Max Levine Ensemble - Leopard Print Girl (Punk) The Four-Eyes - R&R Martian (Punk) Berurier Noir - La Marche Funebre De La Jeunesse Suicidare (Punk) The Nuns - Wild (Punk) The Two Gallants - Fail Hard to Regain (Folk-punk) Soulseek: sketchyjoe Gmail: sketchyjoe |
Berurier Noir - La Marche Funebre De La Jeunesse Suicidare
The song starts out with a low drum beat with high hat (or at least it sounds like one). Soon a guitar riff comes in, in the backround, as well as what sounds maybe like a violin, although it has an almost middle eastern quality to it. A few new things can be heard being added in the backround as well I believe, as he song progesses. About 1 minute into the song, some backround vocals come in, chanting "Laaaaa Laaa La Laaaa Laa" or something like that. Slowly the music all fades away, and is replaced by an electric guitar just kind of going crazy, which leads out the song. Well, the most I can really say, which by no means is a bad thing, is that it was rather weird. Not amazing, but I'm still giving it an 8/10. This song has a standard rhythm and backing music that persists throughout the song. It's quite bouncy with a nice organ part and a pretty cool bassline but it all sounds remarkably familiar. The vocals are alright. They grate slightly but fit the song well. This song never rises above mid-tempo but the music periodically builds into crescendos and drops again into the standard beat. This song is technically fine but it's just not that exciting. The music doesn't excite and neither do the lyrics or vocals which have a talking section at the end of the song, just like every other song that sounds like this. This song doesn't really do anything for me. 4/10 Choose from: The Max Levine Ensemble - Leopard Print Girl (Punk) The Four-Eyes - R&R Martian (Punk) The Nuns - Wild (Punk) The Two Gallants - Fail Hard to Regain (Folk-punk) Stockyard Stoics - Not For Sale (Punk) Soulseek: sketchyjoe Gmail: sketchyjoe |

The first 20 seconds of the song starts off slowly with a folk/country influenced riff and as the drums kick in the song gradually begins to speed up until the lead starts off the song by yelling a deep growl. The song suddenly begins to spin its wheels in full motion as the song progresses. The snare drum is hit quickly, the guitar roars with fantastic punk riffs that flow beautifully with the singer's voice. "We live in a big city, take a look around!" is being chanted as the drummer continues to smash the drums as the guitar yet again rolls in with another amazing riff. The song soon ends with a giant crash from the drummer's crash cymbal and leaves you pumped.
