And I agree, it's a sick DVD. I especially love their performance of that one ****ation song, I can't think of the name right now, but it's the one that goes "Heal myself, a shadow on my heart" or something like that. That's my favorite song from ****ation, and I loved the extended version on the DVD.
A feather* on my heart :P

That's Closure btw.

I really need a DVD player :upset: What all is on that DVD? Performances and they talking about a new album?

Det_Nosnip 09-07-2004 01:21 AM
I don't think it was copyrights, I heard that they could have put older stuff on if they wanted, but the label didn't want to promote albums that were put out by a different label.

Ah, yeah...that's what it was. Grrrr...terrible reason, IMO. The point is to promote the BAND, not just the albums!

Phil Anselmo 09-08-2004 08:24 PM

they are so awesome!!! all their albums are great, listen to all their songs!

IvortheEngineDriver 09-08-2004 10:16 PM

I'm sorry, but where's Flynn? :)

I think my favorite song off of ****ation is Death Whispered a Lullaby. God, I love that song! :)

Big-Bird 09-08-2004 10:21 PM

i still think My Arms, Your Hearse is heavier than Morningrise. Take for example the song Karma, it begins with the heavy drums and guitars, but i could see why Black Rose Immortal could overthrow that.

on a lighter note i think Orchid is their best album

OfSins&Shred 09-08-2004 10:42 PM

Glad to see so many people who love opeth as much as i do.. saw them in sydney earlier this year, best concert, hands down that Ive ever seen.. I think we need an **OFFICIAL** OPETH thread.. what do you guys reckon??

Big-Bird 09-08-2004 10:43 PM

well we got this

OfSins&Shred 09-08-2004 11:03 PM

thanks for stating the obvious there big bird.. maybe we could turn this into an **official** Opeth thread, I duno just a thought..

When I first heard that Damnation was going to be all clean vocals/guitars, I was a little skeptical. But as soon as I heard that track, I rushed out and picked it up. It's my second favorite off the album after Weakness(Am I the only one that likes this song?).

Freaky....mine too! Although, the ending of closure is the best part of the album, IMO.

Antares 09-09-2004 05:29 PM

This one goes out to Flynn. I finally listened to Black Rose Immortal and I must say, it's quite amazing. I especially like the part right around 12:38. The drum beat is so delicious.

I love playing that song ;) That, Blackwater Park, and In My Time Of Need (and the intro to Drapery Falls) are the Opeth songs that I can play on guitar. Great band to just jam out to.

BTW, I noticed on the DVD Mike said his favorite song from ****ation is Hope Leaves. That song always struck me as forgettable, not really worth listening to. hmm.

bucket 09-09-2004 08:53 PM

Hopes Leaves is one of my favorites :D

I struck someone a deal a couple weeks ago. I would give them any CD to listen to, and they would give me any CD to listen to. I gave them Opeth a little early (they forgot the Phish CD). It turns out they can only listen to it until the vocals come on. It's too "devil music" :-\ Apparently Opeth sings about satan all the time

 Anyways that got me mad since our deal was to listen to the WHOLE CD. Oh well.

Big-Bird 09-09-2004 08:58 PM

devil music, funny

Kaden, im jealous

bob the ripper apple. 09-09-2004 08:59 PM

Big-Bird 09-09-2004 09:03 PM

OfSins&Shred 09-09-2004 11:00 PM

the funeral portrait!!!!!!!!!!!

Cardboard Headgear 09-09-2004 11:29 PM

Well I finally got my friend to realize he likes Opeth. He'd always say stuff like "Opeth sucks, emo emo wah wah" to piss me off, but he never really based his opinion on anything. So tonight we were driving around playing music, and I had a mix cd with some Woods of Ypres on it. He said he liked it, so I said "I've got their full length, hold on..." and slipped in MAYH. Here's a brief transcription:

(April Ethereal is on)
Jon: His voice is better on this one. (thinking it's Woods of Ypres)
Me: Yeah, well, uh, this one is newer.
Jon: Dude, he sounds like that guy from Opeth, but better.
(Credence is on)
Jon: This guy's got a tight voice, who is it?
Me: You really want to know? Mikael Akerfeldt
Jon: Hmm. (doesn't know who that is)
Me: Dude, why do you talk **** about Opeth, you like them everytime you listen as long as you don't know it's them.
Jon: WHAT! I'VE BEEN LISTENING TO OPETH!? Oh man, I like Opeth...
Me: Relax, it's not like you're finding out you're gay or anything.
Jon: I know, but it feels like it.
(Silence)
Jon: ****, I like Opeth.

Huzzah!

Det_Nosnip 09-10-2004 12:32 AM

^^ Yeah, sadly, people tend to have negative first impressions of the band. I think that some of it is actually intentional on the part of the band, as alot of what they are represents everything that people are either often afraid of or who people hate without really knowing why (ex: death vocals, or for metal fans, acoustic breaks and dynamics).

ATC 09-10-2004 04:30 AM

me and a girl i am/was in love with decided to go to an opeth concert in april.
heh, she freaked out on seeing the website. decided it was too scary.
and i m like 'nooooooo, these guys arent violent or satanic, just good musicians'
we didnt see them. :upset:

jimihendrix_manson 09-10-2004 04:50 AM

Opeth ****ing usx i saw them and it was ****ing horrible

methodlessman 09-10-2004 05:01 AM

^Shut up.

IvortheEngineDriver 09-10-2004 09:12 AM

Favorite song off of each album:

Orchid: In Mist She was Standing, Forest of October
Morningrise: Black Rose Immortal, To Bid You Farewell
My Arms, Your Hearse: April Etherial, When
Still Life: Godhead's Lament, Benighted
Blackwater Park: The Drapery Falls, Blackwater Park...****, THEY ARE ALL GOOD!!!
Deliverance: Deliverance, Master's Apprentice
****ation: Death Whispered A Lullaby, Hope Leaves

Weakness is a great song, but the song I have never gotten into is A Fair Judgement.

"Lost you there..."

hehe :)

I agree...the Latin Drums just make it awesome. I kinda like the end part of To Rid the Disease...the piano is haunting and I like the way the bass comes in

Kaden 09-10-2004 02:03 PM
Kaden, im jealous
OfSins&Shred 09-13-2004 09:21 PM

What do you guys think the new open will be like?? any ideas??

Push the Envelope 09-14-2004 12:31 AM

In the documentary on the Lamentations DVD they said they wanted to do something very different with the next album; Mikeal wants to do a concept cd again, but wants the songs to have a more 'black metal' feel.

Here's a random quote from an intereview I was reading that mentioned a new album;
Mikeal: Yeah, with more like a swing to it, and also have some ultra extreme parts as well as some of the beautiful metal bits.
