You can do some really cool things with opening and closing the hi-hat as accents, and 16th notes can be cool.

I figured out that the sign of a good drummer is if they can use the hi-hat with just their foot while doing other things with the stix.

And you're a good guitarist if you can tune while playing.

And a good bassist if you don't just follow the guitar.
shuffles and that sort of stuff doesn't work without hi hats. At least not as well. My favorite is like open hi-hat, snare, snare, snare or using my left hand to hit open hi-hats in the middle of a fill.

Did you hear my recording of the coheed song ever?

almost all drummers can do that :-\
No, you can be a mediocre musician and still be in a band.
Watch live videos. Almost any drummer uses it to keep time.

The best ones play cowbell beats on it or something.

BridgeToSolace 09-03-2006 12:19 AM

Drums are one of the only instruments were lessons don't really help you at all.

Eliminator 09-03-2006 12:19 AM

really because i magically got better

BridgeToSolace 09-03-2006 12:21 AM

Lessons tend to help some people only because it gets them to practice, rather than the merit of the lessons's content.

I know, srsly.

You need to focus and know how to multi-task properly.

Well, the drummers I know who have taken formal lessons are absolutely terrible, yet my two friends who drum who are largely self taught (with some help from family members and what not) are fairly decent.

The best way to learn drums is to listen to good drummers.

Drums are one of the only instruments where lessons are pretty critical.

I'd be so much better if I wasn't self-taught.

Eliminator 09-03-2006 12:27 AM

true

one time i took a piss in a drummer's mouth. he liked it so we ****ed. true story.

JohnXDoesn't 09-03-2006 12:28 AM

Chilly-Bean-Bop 09-03-2006 12:29 AM

Alroytie.

I've always wanted to learn drums, but we don't have enough room in teh house and my mom doesn't want me making noise.

Eliminator 09-03-2006 12:29 AM

Chilly-Bean-Bop 09-03-2006 12:30 AM

Self-taught guitarists are usually bad at writing music.

I fail to see what you can learn about drumming from a formal teacher than couldn't be learned just be practicing and listening.

Eliminator 09-03-2006 12:31 AM

does "NO" count?

:(

Um, technique? There's a serious lack of amazing drummers because most think they can get by without taking lessons. If more drummers took lessons, more drummers would be amazing.

What technique?

It seems to me that if a kid was a self-taught guitarist, at one point he would have said "Hey, only picking down is really slow, maybe if I pick up too I'll go faster!!!"

If that's what you mean anyway. I speak in guitar terms.

How you hold a drumstick drastically affects not only speed but also how much you hurt yourself. Improper technique can give you carpal tunnel. Improper technique also leads to broken cymbals, sticks, and drumheads. Improper technique, if uncorrected, will limit your control drastically and make you a sloppy player.

Eliminator 09-03-2006 12:40 AM

i hold sticks like the old people do
