Yeah, a name involving giraffes would be fun.

superpeer 11-07-2005 12:40 PM
I can make that happen :)

No not really: Dickinson and MJK are in the top ten so they get to head up their own polls. I like both of them too.

And hey shut up, you nominated COBAIN! If you still think he's a good vocalist then maybe you should acquaint yourself with Paul Westerberg.
I have no clue who he is, to be perfectly honest. But yeah, I heart Cobain. :)
EDIT: YDload, Luke Ciocirri (sp?) is a really good singer, I don't getwhy you saw it necessary to put (ADEMA SUCKS) next to his name, same goes for the (KORN LOL) comment, it's just uneccessary .
He's the vocalist/main guy for The Replacements, I believe.

Regarding Bad English - there is a way for "for" to be followed by "I", isn't there? Just that for takes a slightly different meaning there, maybe.
Ken changed it to what it is now. Presumably he didn't like the irreverent nature of the old one(s).
I dont see why he gets to choose it. Even when he was actively modding he never posted in here.

You mean like "I will not do that, for I am pure of heart"?

"Bow down to me, for I am your God ,"

Bartender 11-07-2005 12:51 PM

Yeah, that's the kind of thing I was thinking of.

superpeer 11-07-2005 12:53 PM
Yeah, that's the kind of thing I was thinking of.
That's because in that case, for is not a preposition, but a conjunction, so the 'I' is still subject in that clause. Hence the nominative.

Reading this post, I realize how little I know about the technical aspects of grammar.

Don't worry, you're not alone in that.

Bartender 11-07-2005 01:04 PM

A native (EDIT: or non-native, now that I think of it) speaker of English, unless they're going to teach the language or something similar, doesn't really have to know all the in-depth grammar rules. It's enough, in using the language, to know when to say what, without knowing why.

Shadows 11-07-2005 01:06 PM

Good point. I learn more about grammar in my German class, but I'm definitely better at using proper Grammar in English than German.

Yeah, but like I told camelfarmer in the pit (he didn't know when to use 'I' and when 'me', then later claimed to be good at English), if you know the theory you'll make fewer mistakes. If you know why you're doing something, you'll do it more easily.

EDIT: But English speaking people really have a very very small knowledge of their grammar. Some people don't even know what prepositions or clauses are. And I learned all that in high school (for Dutch). I think it might have some effect on the poor language skills of many English speaking people.

It's right, as a high achieving english student in England I have no Idea what Jelle is talking about half the time in his rants on the subject, it's a gap in the curriculum, certainly in England.

the sad thing is, everyone in the US is taught the difference. Apparently if you REMEMBER what you are taught in the US, you are in the minority

to be honest, most knowledge of tenses etc, comes from my french lessons, and it's not just that there's a gap in the curriculum but we did get a really crap teacher for 2 years, for our GCSEs.

That was a tough time...

i was ratching around in the garage the other day and found my mother's The Essential Simon & Garfunkel that i got her for her birthday a couple of years ago. i also found David Bowie's Greatist Hits, so i ripped them both to my laptop.

He's the lead singer for The Replacements. Think Husker Du with the occasional tender moment, plus vocals that sound similar to Cobain's but a bit more emotional. Plus he's the best lyricist I know of.

I Am Vikingcore/Eleventeen is on my ignore list for some reason, but I can choose to view individual posts for things such as counting up votes in the poll. My stance is that if I did not allow myself to type in caustic comments about singers who I don't believe should be nominated, then I would surely go crazy from the boredom of it.

I intend to bring a healthy (or unhealthy) dose of opinion to the poll, but I will still remain impartial above all.

Bartender 11-07-2005 02:05 PM

On the subject of Rammstein, could someone please upload Mutter for me and email me the link? As you may know I'm not a great fan of owning whole albums in mp3, but I'd feel justified in this one. I bought it (and loved it) a few years ago, but made the mistake of lending it to a less than reliable acquaintance of mine. It was the red tour edition, too :(
