Well, at the moment, I'm known to be cymbal happy, not just due to the amount of cymbals I have on my set up, but because afterwards someone said to me, "Dude, every time I looked at you, all your cymbals were moving" as in having just been hit. So, on my relatively small kit, if i'm constantly using 4 crashes, I reckon I should more than easily be able to use 7 or 8.

The problem I have is that I've kind of been forced to use all my cymbals and all my kit... everyone knows that I'm a self-taught drummer, and hence I'm under constant pressure to use all my stuff, or else people will say I'm just trying to show off or be an attention seeker :( So, I'm gonna have to start major fills that will use all my toms, or else face being berated :( Likewise, when I got my 24" china, I was told that I was just being greedy, that I'm not actually going to use it. So now my band has a song which is more or less entirley focused around that china. The problem of having the biggest kit in school :(

ArcLite 03-10-2005 06:03 AM

Wow, good explaination. I guess it makes sense then. You'll have to take an updated pic of the kit when you get all the new elements.

GurS 03-10-2005 06:05 AM

Aye, tomorrow evening there should be pics of my new baby up. I can't wait!

I'm probalby gonna buy a mate's splash, and I heard that if you get a cymbal, and kinda push it inside-out, you can make a homemade china. I'm certainly gonna try that with a crappy 16" crash I have (I never use it, I only use 18" crashes or more. But for a china, i reckon a 16" could sound pretty nice).

What's your weapon of choice, cjborton?

Arucard 03-10-2005 06:06 AM

IMO, you only need 4/5 piece kit with two crashes, hats and a ride to sound great. Anything more than that is a waste of money.

ArcLite 03-10-2005 06:09 AM

My weapons are my Ibanez SZ320 (favorite), Gibson SG, and my piss Peavey Predator Plus, which was my first guitar and doesn't get played much anymore. Right now I play though a 15W Marshall, but as soon as I get out of the Army I'll be upgrading that to at least a 60W.

Someone asked me what my idea of a minamilist kit is. I said, 5 piece, 2 crashes, ride, hats, china, double kick pedal.

It seems to be the 'in' thing these days to have a 4 piece, hats and three crashes (2 'regular' size and a larger one in place of the other tom). The best drummer in my school has that, a four piece, with hats, a 16" crash, a 17" crash, and an 18" in place of the other rack tom.

Army, eh?

I should be doing that in a few months. But I'll probably put it of till I'm 25, so I only have to do 6 months + training as opposed to three years. **** IDF... **** Jews.... I HATE THEM SO MUCH! *shakes fist*

ArcLite 03-10-2005 06:13 AM

How the deuce are you only gonna do 6 months? I've heard about an 18 month plan, but that's the shortest I know of.

GurS 03-10-2005 06:15 AM

Well, in the IDF, if you're over 25, the only make you do 6months service, + training. Then again, it's different in Israel. Once you've done that, you have to do 1 month army service a year until you're 45 or something.

Its not really 'in' its just it generally sounds the best. Ok, drummer such as nicko who do ridiculous full kit fills are good, but think of the REALLY good drummers.

Steve Gadd : 4 Piece
Mike Van Dyne (Hes in Arsis, a death metal band) : 4 Piece
DragonForce Dude : 4/5 Piece.

Its just more practical really. But i know that massive kits are really fun.

GurS 03-10-2005 06:17 AM

It switches from drummer to drummer. A lot of drummers can do really well on a basic kit, but there's others who make full use of HUGE kits (Nicko, Peart, Portnoy etc.) Then you get those with the huge kits who can't make use of it (Alex Van H)

Arucard 03-10-2005 06:18 AM

Portney is a very mediocre drummer. He just copies everything Dave Weckle does, but in a poor way.

GurS 03-10-2005 06:19 AM

indeed.

So, my drum teacher totally pwned me the other day by doing the Silent Planet triplets.... :upset:

Arucard 03-10-2005 06:19 AM

But Peart uses his kit well, but you have to remeber his basic kit is only 6 piece, but it gets big with all of the piccolo toms he uses.

GurS 03-10-2005 06:20 AM

Terry Bozio

If you can be bothered flicking back through all the pages you shall see some rather wonderful executions by Bartender, and possibly Riva.

I need some help :\

I downloaded PF - Live in Venice, and it finished yesterday, but it was weird.
Instead of a single file, it came wout about 30 WinRAR files with names like r00 then r01 then r02 that all contained the same img file. Once I extracted the img file I tried to load it up on Daemon Tools, and played it with media player classic and I got some audio but just a blue screen... Also, the time thing said it was only 11 seconds long, but once it went past 11 it still kept on playing...

I really want to see this ><
What does it mean when someone has (a) at the end of his/her post?
(a) is the angel smiley in MSN Messenger.

One usually puts it and the end of his/her message to denote that what he/she said was innocent, but on MX it tends to be used as innocent sarcasm, if that makes sense.

For example,

Ramsey says: Listen to my new song (a)

Antihero says: Plex, why did you hack my account?
Plex says: I don't know what you're talking about (a)
