Every species has a single genome (ex. the human genome). Comparative genomics works to use evolutionary concepts to identify species relationships and the evolutionary tree, from which you can derive gene functions and potential locations for gene therapy. For example, if no other primate gets a disease that humans do, we can compare their genomes and identify places where they differ such that there is a very limited number of possible reasons humans are susceptible, then try to fix it. Also useful in things like cancer which damage genomic data since we can use it to examine your DNA and see what risk factors exist and where mutations are occuring. |
