I've only read the first three but I think it's pretty awesome. I mean, I realize it's mostly just senseless violence and that it really only becomes enjoyable because of the context but so far they've made for nice, quick reads. Plus #7 came out today.

yeah it just seems to hit the same button over and over and is about the quickest read I've ever seen. I don't hate it but it's just so insubstantial that it surprises me to see you enjoying it (especially after Swamp Thing!)

Not really a fan of Millar outside of Ultimates anyway really. His style is too overblown and focused on his ideas for my tastes.

That's why I like it, though. It's something I can just sort of blast through. I've actually been reading it on my phone; it's a time waster, really. I enjoy it but it isn't something I'd consider a classic. I'm more invested in Scott Pilgrim right now. Going to finally check Sandman out next, then I'll go back and finish Astonishing X-Men. I want to read some of the Ultimate stuff but it's such a huge investment, there's so much of it.

The Ultimates is the only thing in the Ultimate universe I would make a point of recommending, the rest can be good, but yeah, huge investment for what generally becomes very standard fare.

Sandman <3. I've heard a lot of people not love the first few trades, but I was not one of them. Got even better the second time through as well.

Jason, I might start a comics/graphic novels thread in the Video Games/Movies section FYI so the nerd-dome can go there. There used to be a thread (well, two, one spawned out of the Watchmen thread, the other part of some Marvel thread) but we could use a comprehensive one.

The Ultimates is a complete reinvention of The Avengers. Very cinematic and very fresh. Very Millar too really, loves big splash pages and such. Not my kind of comic generally but it's really well done and the first 2 volumes really do warrant a read. The rest of the Ultimate line just seems to follow the originals far more closely, and because they were ongoing (Ultimates had like 24 issues total, so it was very focused with definite endpoints) they kinda became generic superhero comics.

Walking Dead is way down on my list of things to get, but I enjoyed the second volume if that means anything.

I would frequent that thread, love to find some people to talk to them about. Obviously it's pretty scarce.

Just to clarify, I mean second hardcover volume, which collects The Walking Dead #13-24 or the 3rd and 4th trade paperback.
