Ugh.

I have to do a current event for 2 (of 4) high school classes, and the one I found this week just makes me sad.

Fried. Freaking. Coke.

'Cause you know...the average American needs to get even more fat =/

Crazy and Stupid 10-27-2006 08:44 AM

aren't you just a ray of sunshine?
hahaha octavian. Wonder where you got that from :P
Where did I get that from?

maniac0796 10-27-2006 10:26 AM

According to Cocaberry, why does breaking a stick everytime i do a rimshot make me a better drummer?

Bonham#1! 10-27-2006 10:33 AM

Because breaking sticks is so HXC

We_Love_Lime 10-27-2006 10:35 AM

It makes you a man and gets more tone out of your drums.

**** that, My drums sound the same if I use 5a's or 5b's

maniac0796 10-27-2006 11:01 AM

define HXC?

In other news, i've just realised i've been here for about a year now. My year old MXDP anniversery.

Vannaroth 10-27-2006 11:49 AM

2 years for me, hooray

Cocaberry 10-27-2006 11:58 AM
According to Cocaberry, why does breaking a stick everytime i do a rimshot make me a better drummer?
That's an exaggeration.

I said you aren't a hard hitter if you don't break sticks. You use 5As FFS.... and claim to be a hard hitter. A hard hitter would definitely snap 5As.

Wood drumsticks do not have an unlimited lifetime when in the hands of a hard hitter, even the thickest kit sticks. I've worn down and snapped Vic Firth metal hickory sticks. Those are among the thickest kit sticks Vic Firth produces.

You hit like a pansy. Give it up. You have no evidence that suggests otherwise.

trysthedrummer 10-27-2006 12:01 PM

It says on my Join date. Nearly....2 years? Christ that's gone quick.

I might not come on here anymore, hopefully my life won't go as quick

maniac0796 10-27-2006 12:06 PM

1. define hard hitter
2. Bear in mind drum angles and playing height ETC
3. Explain why i should be hitting hard and trying to break drumsticks
4. Not everyone has to break drumsticks to satisfy their own playing

Cocaberry 10-27-2006 12:38 PM
1. define hard hitter
I'm not going to define it since everyone here has a different idea what a hard hitter is and to draw lines and make specific rules would launch a huge discussion that I don't have time for.

Some hard hitters just off the top of my head are Brad Wilk, Danny Carey, Dave Grohl, Dave Abbruzzese (from Pearl Jam 1991-1994), John Bonham, Josh Freese, Abe Laboriel, jr., and John Tempesta.

Personally, I believe anybody that classifies themself as a "hard hitter" should be able to easily crash a medium ride hard enough for it to open up. After watching your video, I can easily tell you don't have that capability.
With a reasonable set up anybody can put power into their playing. Even people like Travis Barker, with his ridiculous setup still puts some power into his playing. If he can do it on a set up like that then you can too on your kit.
3. Explain why i should be hitting hard and trying to break drumsticks

Well let's see. Most drummers who get anywhere end up backing a band. Most bands have to eventually play live.

You must prepare yourself for all circumstances. What if you have to play unmiced?

You think your little half-stroke rimshot backbeats are gonna cut through amps? Remember if the band turns down the amps, the people in the back will have hard time hearing. What do you do? Think about it.

Do you think you entertain the crowd by doing little half-stroke backbeats when the song is mainly 2 & 4 with hardly any chops? Haha, lots of people from the crowd are watching the drummer because the drummer generally moves around more than everyone else. Looking like you're half-assing it is surely going to piss people off.
4. Not everyone has to break drumsticks to satisfy their own playing
Yeah, true. Many people get by hitting like pansies. But you know what? Versatility is a large part of what separates the drumming gods and drumming legends from the average run-of-the-mill drummers like yourself.

Josiah 10-27-2006 12:39 PM

In order for drums to sound their best, and techniques to be used at their best. There need be a particular amount of force used.

These people who says a pair of sticks last them months.. that's not playing drums. That's tapping them.

And if you ever want to play live, you best get used to playing drums.

Cocaberry 10-27-2006 12:41 PM

Yeah, you gotta OWN the drums..

OWN DAMMIT

And in order to own, you have to put some power in your playing.

I wasn't gonna do this, but i am, and this is what i say for it.

"I'm not going to define it since everyone here has a different idea what a hard hitter is and to draw lines and make specific rules would launch a huge discussion that I don't have time for."

that alone loses yours and mine arguments

"With a reasonable set up anybody can put power into their playing. Even people like Travis Barker, with his ridiculous setup still puts some power into his playing. If he can do it on a set up like that then you can too on your kit."

I meant in terms of breaking sticks, and i'll admit i made that a very unclear statement.

"Personally, I believe anybody that classifies themself as a "hard hitter" should be able to easily crash a medium ride hard enough for it to open up. After watching your video, I can easily tell you don't have that capability."

Why do i have to sit there and pelt the crap out my drums at home in my living room on a sunday morning. I understand that i will have to hit harder at a gig, and on one occasion i've actually drowned out singing and guitarists whilst doing that.

What i don't understand is, why does hitting hard mean i have to break drumsticks.

And what does a paiste 302 ride count as? Med? Med thin?

Josiah 10-27-2006 01:10 PM

It's not hitting hard. It's hitting better. The more energy you put in the stick, the more energy in the stick, the more the stick can do without you working to make it do it.

Sticks break from wear, not like 1 massive smal. Rimshots, mostly for me. Ahh see, this is what my sticks look like after about a week of practice, notice the rest of the stick is in pretty good shape, even up on the shoulder (glancing blows on cymbals)-

And ever since i first heard you say that about 1/2 year ago, i've been applying it, and it works. It enabled me to get faster, more clean fills and rolls.

Vannaroth 10-27-2006 01:14 PM

Josiah's big toe is smaller than his second and possibly third toes

Josiah 10-27-2006 01:21 PM

Excellent maniac! My sticks wear that way because of the angle of attack I get on my rimshots, it produces the rimshot sound I enjoy the most. Consitency is what kills the sticks.

Vannaroth - that's classic male dominant feet!

sexual_harassment_panda 10-27-2006 01:23 PM

josh, dude, you have some very unsexy toes there

Josiah 10-27-2006 01:43 PM

I'm glad my toes do not appear "sexy" to another male.

trysthedrummer 10-27-2006 01:56 PM
