Power/Viking/Folk/Black all tend to get blurry. There's the very genre specific bands that are easy to tell apart, then you have acts like Falkenbach, Mithotyn, Galloglass and Melechesh.
I've never really confused Black Metal with Power Metal...Darkthrone and DragonForce sound pretty different to me. But I see where you're coming from. |
Well, as I said there are the genre specific bands. Dragonforce and Darkthrone are both the archetypes of their genres.
Enya's new age celtic mysticism or something. She doesn't count.
({) |
Can anyone Reccommend me some blues of all types? Thanks.
|
They are.
No, they're not. |
No, they're not.
How are they not power metal? |

They have some PM touches in there, but they aren't entirely PM at all. They have more Irish/Folk resemblance than anything else. Which album do you have? Gaia? |

Gaia and Jesu. I see a lot more power metal in them than folk, and I see little to no Irish folk in it, considering they're Spanish... |

Oh, I need to send you some more then. You need Blefast and Finisterra to really see what I'm talking about. :p |

Look back about two pages. Tons of recommendations. |

Alright, thanks! Although you really won't be able to send me anything until the end of May. :( I'm at school and they block YSI, AIM, megaupload, etc. |
I don't have nearly enough happy/hopeful music in my collection. Would someone recommend me something in any genre (besides power or progressive metal)? I normally listen to post/prog rock and singer/songwriter with random bits of other stuff.
http://www.last.fm/user/pizzatini/ for more accuarate interests. Or any general things that I should listen to, but don't. Thank you :) |

Could somebody recommend me a Mike Oldfield album. I need a place to start. Thanks.
|
Start at the start; Tubular Bells.
|
What Boris album is the best?
|
I've currently been digging Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Kayo Dot, Gong and in a similar vein, though off at a bit of a tangent, Screaming Headless Torsos. Does anyone have some more recommendations for cool Avant Garde groups?

bump
Arcturus. And Solefald. |
I named some bands for that at first, but then realised it was you with a different avatar, and my mind went blank.
What Boris album is the best?
Depends what you're looking for. They change about quite a bit. Akuma No Uta is an EP which has bits and pieces from most of their major styles, which is nice. |

Greg, my boy, let's start with what you like. I know you're not a stranger to electronica, so let's go for his newest album: Light + Shade, which is a very fine album. For rock: Tubular Bells or Five Miles Out. For folk: Ommadawn or Hergest Ridge. For a rock/electronica blend: most of his other albums will suffice, but I recommend Tubular Bells III. |
Well, I took Barkeep's recommendation last night and I dug it, so I'll pursue with what you've mentioned when I get the chance. Thanks. :)
|
You should have just emailed me. I'm hurt, really I am.
|
I was wondering when you would find his post :p

And Fantomas, Lux Occulta (check out their album the Mother and the Enemy), Peccatum and Age of Silence. |
Yeah, Lux Occulta make great avant garde.

Heh, so was I. :p |
Hey, I don't know why you guys think I'm a fanboy. It's not like I've listened to a 25 minute song by him 28 times...
