/slack

I just heard after a long waiting period the infamous Black Rose Immortal.

meh..kinda dissapointed. I say anything before MAYH was kinda below par. But I guess it was a different genre back then. Anyway.

The new album rocks btw, At the mo I REALLY dig TBOTH and Harlequin Forest. Awesome riffs. I guess I like it so much because alot of the riffs on the new album remind of MAYH...<< my fav Opeth album ever.
Blasphamy! It's my favorite song of all time!

penelope_weird_hands 08-24-2005 07:48 AM

'lo folks.. recently converted opeth fan and even more recent (as in now..1st post!) musicianforum'er.

my ears never really agreed with any form of metal until i heard opeth. the growls took a while to get used to but i love them now.. and the musicianship.. well.. it goes without saying.

i have yet to buy any albums but i have downloaded still life, blackwater park, da*mnation and (couldnt help it) ghost reveries. fkking brilliant. i'm well on my way to becoming obsessed ;p

fav tracks thus far, though they change daily (2 off each album i have heard)
moonlapse vertigo
the moor
the leper affinity
BWP
ghost of perdition
beneath the mire
closure
windowpane

anyway..! sorry for the n00b post..
opeth owns
opeth fans own
that is all.
^ Get Deliverance. You skipped that one...
will do .. along with the first 3.

can't wait to hear them all

_HiGhVoLtAgE_ 08-24-2005 11:33 AM

can someone recommend me some opeth
i know of a couple songs and they are ****in awesome
blackwater park
bleak
a fair judgement

i would of posted in the music recommendations thread but i cant find it

Jude 08-24-2005 11:36 AM
I have heard most of those songs, and I still wouldn't call them metal. They have some metal/rockish riffs but I haven't heard one song that I would consider fully metal.
Wedding Nails and Orchidia and CHAM and Strip the Soul are fully metal. Shallow too. The rest may not be all metal, but the riffs are still metaller than most other metal I've heard.

I really don't think they are, they sound more hard rock to me.

I'm seeing Opeth on the 7th September in Manchester, can't wait

from what i've heard:

off Blackwater Park
The Leper Affinity
The Drapery Falls
The Funeral Portrait
Dirge For November

off Still Life (all of them own..but)
The Moor
Godheads Lament
Moonlapse Vertigo
Face of Melinda

off Damnation (much more mellow than previous albums)
Windowpane
Closure
Hope Leaves
Death Whispered a Lullaby

off Ghost Reveries (coming out on the 30th)
Ghost of Perdition
Beneath the Mire
Atonement
Reverie/Harlequin Forest

and for anything off of Orchid, Morningrise, My Arms Your Hearse, or Deliverance you'll have to ask the veterans i haven't heard all that much of either of those,..

Darkness 08-24-2005 11:54 AM

From Deliverance get Deliverance, Masters Apprentices and Wreath, from My Arms Your Hearse, get When and Demon Of The Fall and April Ethereal. The others are a bit harder to get into, so get these first.

RouteOne 08-24-2005 01:26 PM
Black Sabbath.....they created the genre, if it weren't for them there would be no opeth, because all the bands that inspired opeth would not exsist in their entity either
Sabbath wasn't that great actually.

Reflection 08-24-2005 01:35 PM

Off Orchid:
Forest of October
The Apostle In Triumph
In The Mist She Was Standing

Off Morningrise:
To Bid You Farewell (long, slow acoustic song)
Black Rose Immortal (23 minute epic)
Advent

Jude 08-24-2005 01:54 PM
Sabbath wasn't that great actually.
Yes they were. Up until after Dio anyway.

I've heard Still Life, ****ation, and Ghost Reveries, I have Orchid, BWP, Morningrise and MAYH too but I haven't listened to them all that much yet.

Off Still Life:
Face of Melinda, Godhead's Lament, Moonlapse Vertigo own.

Off ****ation:
Windowpane, Death Whispered a Lullaby, and Closure stand out.

Ghost Reveries:
THE GRAND ****ING CONJURATION. The other songs are good, but they CANNOT step to this monster. The main riff owns every other metal riff you've ever heard. I wouldn't have minded if they had just played that riff for ten minutes.

And if you can't call Wedding Nails, Orchidia, Futile and the middle of Arriving Somewhere But Not Here metal, then NOTHING is metal.

ATC 08-24-2005 02:14 PM

Off Deliverance (since it was missed):

Deliverance
Wreath
By the Pain I see in Others

EDIT: I see Darkness of Greed did do it, but not in a vertical manner :p

Special Brew 08-24-2005 02:23 PM

I don't like them. I don't see how they created the genre either. I'm not saying they didn't, I just don't see many similarities.

penelope_weird_hands 08-24-2005 02:26 PM

ffs
1:25 into the Leper Affinity and thereafter.

rips me a new pineal gland ;p
Are you on dial-up?
I'm on cable. The audio streams fine. The video streamed fine for me once yesterday for about 1:30 of the video.

I can't understand this lack of love for Grand Conjuration.

ROH 08-24-2005 10:52 PM
I can't understand this lack of love for Grand Conjuration.
I loved it at first, then I heard Ghost of Perdition. GOP smokes TGC out of the water, IMO.

But those are the only two I've heard so far. So that isn't anything close to a full opinion yet.
