IAJP 01-29-2006 10:21 AM

Hello Classic Rockers, long time no see maybe.

I was about to ask this in the R&M Community, but I had a feeling they wouldn't know.

The other day I was at a parent's evening, and I was told that my music performance was just "OK", even though I thought it was good. The song is "Jimi Hendrix - Hey Joe", and I kinda thought it was alright to pick up marks. But I've been told I need to do something more complicated to pick up more marks.

So being the non-defeatist I am, I came home t'other day, and banged out some tunes on my 12 string guitar, and I realised, a great song to do would be a LOVE one. Although I have most albums of their's, I thought it'd be fitting to do one off Forever Changes, cause' it has such a nice ammount of 12 string guitar.

Now, all I ask, which do you think I should do?
Top of my list at the moment are:

#1: The Red Telephone,
#2: Alone Again Or,
#3: Daily Planet,
#4: Maybe The People Would Be The Times Or Between Clark And Hilldale,
#5: The Good Humor Man He Sees Everything Like This.

What do you think? I'm sure you'll all understand my situation, and let me stick it to this music teacher.!

EDIT:

More important is, this has to be recorded between Monday the 3rd of April to Wednesday the 5th of April.

jpj 01-29-2006 10:46 AM

Alone Again Or, definitely. That's my favorite song on Forever Changes by a long shot.

I just got DP 24 :D I may upload it and 22 eventually.

Brewer14 01-29-2006 10:53 AM

My top 5 classic bands:

Jimi Hendrix
The Beatles
Eric Clapton/Cream
The Allman Brothers
AC/DC
Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and CCR were also considered.

I was thinking that, but after listening to The Red Telephone a few times, I think it stands alone better on its own, instead of Alone Again Or, which doesn't sound as good on it's own.

Just my thinking though, I'll carry on having a look.:)
Haha, yeah that made me laugh.

I do, In The Court of The Crimson King is one of my favorite albums.
That's the album that i bought this weekend.

Lunch 01-29-2006 11:18 AM

Red and Discipline are pretty good after that, though I don't like them as much as the first album.

Glitterati 01-29-2006 11:30 AM

I've been listening to a ton of Barenaked Ladies tonight. They're so awesome.

jpj 01-29-2006 11:32 AM

The only song I really like on In The Court of The Crimson King is 21st Century Schizoid Man. I like Red a Discipline more.

The only song I really like on In the Court of the Crimson King is Epitaph.

Zappa 01-29-2006 11:40 AM

I've never posted in here. But I'm listening to Elephant Mountain by Youngbloods right now, and it's sweet. It's the first classic rock record I've gotten in a really long time. Good folk rock with bits of psychedelica.

Lunch 01-29-2006 11:45 AM

Yea it's a pretty good album, my dad has it.

You might like it here, we actually discuss jazz from time to time.

Hmm. Posting in R&M. How 2002 of me.

thickasabrick 01-29-2006 01:01 PM

My friend just bought a Hammond Organ for fifty bucks from Value Village yesterday...we have been having some seriously awesome jams now!

Bob Dylan
Pink Floyd
The Beatles
The Doors
The Grateful Dead

My list is kinda lame actually, there's really no one semi-suprising on my list.

edit - Anyone who's into blues in this thread should check out this guys improv piece he posted in the Guitar section. It's really good. It's near the bottom of the first page I think...not exactly sure, but I thought it was great.

Seafroggys 01-29-2006 02:10 PM

thats fricken awesome, I want to get a Hammond B3, an Electric Rhodes, and a Minimoog!
thats fricken awesome, I want to get a Hammond B3, an Electric Rhodes, and a Minimoog!
I've got a pretty awesome organ...it was my great grandmothers, she passed a while a few years ago and it was just sitting in some relatives house getting unused so they offered it to me. My mom won't let me take it to my friends garage though because she just knows it's in the middle of the hood and all we do is get baked there all day and night and jam out...it's not like I'm gonna break it or even get it a touch dirty.

Man I am soo high right now and I'm listening to Tomorrow Never Knows, and I have to leave for basketball practice right now. My mom just informed me that she wants me to drive...this is the ultimate test. Wish me luck!!! Haha!!

TheDMV 01-29-2006 03:03 PM

I knew all of them minus Neil Young, didn't figure you for a big Neil fan. Speaking of which would people consider Harvest to be one of his better albums's? I want to get a friend into Neil but I don't know what album is generally considered his best.

I'll upload After the Goldrush. It got me into Neil. Good mix of acoustic folk and then rock like Southern Man.

jpj 01-29-2006 03:11 PM

Harvest, On The Beach, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere (my personal favorite), and After the Goldrush (just for Southern Man alone) are all good starting points.

Harvest is a marvelous acoustic album, but for me, nothing can replace After The Goldrush. The songs are simple, and beautiful. The title track might be his all time best.
You like ELP*, the Beatles, Neil Young, Jeff Buckley, Pink Floyd and George Harrison I'm thinking.
ELO* ;-) And way to go check out my last fm, haha. I think I can safely say Trans-Siberian Orchestra is up there in my favorite bands now.

Broken Arrow 01-29-2006 04:21 PM

Neil Young
Pink Floyd
Grateful Dead
Bob Dylan
The Doors

Too typical. :(

Illmatic 01-29-2006 04:35 PM

I'll use non-rappers because no one here wants to see that

Miles
Hendrix
Coltrane
Funkadelic
Curtis Mayfield
Marley

Broken Arrow 01-29-2006 04:38 PM

I thought only n00bs hate rap now.

Seeing that most regulars like atleast one rapper/rap band.

Illmatic 01-29-2006 04:45 PM

I suppose.

Yeah but I'm a rap n00b because I only listen to mainstream rap and am too lazy to find underground stuff :)

I think Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere would be a great one for getting a friend interested, assuming they are into rock. Anyone who likes rock even just a little bit should love EKTIN. Harvest is a great one for his folkier songs.

Illmatic, do you have any rap that you think I would like? You seem to listen to a lot of rap, so I figure you would have lots of different types of rap to offer a guy like me. I've heard rap that I've really liked on my community radio station, but it's all local and underground bands and I can never find albums by them or I just forget their names.

edit - And I've been teaching a lot of my students (Sittin' on) The Dock of the Bay lately, it's so much fun to play along with the CD...although half my students can't play a B chord fast enough. That song has the most amazing bridge type part to it.

I haven't tried playing guitar along to it, admittedly...I have tried to sing it but I'm just not as good as Otis is.

Badmoon 01-29-2006 05:37 PM

Grateful Dead
The Beatles
The Pogues
Ry Cooder
Peter Tosh
Lee "Scratch" Perry

pigonthewing82 01-29-2006 05:43 PM

1) Bob Dylan
2) Pink Floyd
3) Jimi Hendrix
4) Cream (or any band with Clapton in it)
5) The Beatles
6) The Who

Umm, I dunno...I guess guys who you think write well. I suppose more "poetic" guys than what you would normally hear from mainstream rappers like Eminem or 50 Cent (which is about half the rap I am familiar with). Cool backing music would definitely be a bonus cool, like interesting beats or concepts for background music. A lot of the rap that I have liked was more "trippy" than the usual...although I think that word is a little cliche and overused and may not be a helpful descriptor. I'll download anything you want to send me and I'll see if I like it.

I sometimes start singing during lessons when we are playing along to songs. It usually doesn't turn out so great. Especially to someone like Otis. I can always hear the guy singing who teaches guitar in the room right next to me, it's pretty funny. He's got a soft highpitched sorta voice. Imagine Roger Waters singing falsetto in his whispery voice.

Actually, Eminem has written some really good stuff (check out "Stan" if you don't believe me)

I'll throw some rappers out there, if you want specific song recommendations than ask:

Nas
2Pac (I'm wavering on this one...he's kind of a cliche suggestion, you probably wouldn't like most of his materal but you could appreciate some of his more poetic stuff. besides, most of his beats sound very dated)
Outkast
The Roots
People Under the Stairs
A Tribe Called Quest
Common
Talib Kweli
Mos Def (also, Black Star)
Jurassic 5 (I don't like them all that much but you probably would...along those lines, Atmosphere, Blackalicious, Dilated Peoples, a lot of those underground acts that I'm not crazy about)
Slum Village

I actually can't believe it...I definitely think I need to hear it to believe it

I consider myself a good singer (ego++) but I'm not as good as Otis, I'll admit it.

magicbus 01-29-2006 06:17 PM

1. The Beatles
2. Pink Floyd
3. Cream
4. The Doors
5. Jimi Hendrix and bands
6. Jeff Beck

Honorable mentions include Neil Young, Blind Faith, The Band, and Frank Zappa.

thickasabrick 01-29-2006 06:29 PM

Illmatic, out of the artists/groups you mentioned I've only heard 2Pac and Outkast. I've liked what I've heard from 2Pac and I'm pretty sure I've liked most of Outkasts stuff. I'm pretty open to anything. If there's anything you have that would be considered more experimental and "out of the ordinary" I wouldn't mind that. If you don't mind uploading an album, maybe some other people would wanna hear it too. I don't wanna make you upload an album just for me though.

JonG 01-29-2006 06:40 PM

'moon what are The Pogues like? I see you and EMH talking about them, I'd like to check 'em out.

Thanks for the GD.
