Six Foot Revolver 04-02-2005 02:54 PM

Permanent Solution 04-02-2005 02:55 PM
Some people would though. Just like some people (lots) will care that the Pope has died.
It won't affect the majority of non-Catholics most likely.

magicbus 04-02-2005 03:03 PM
It won't affect the majority of non-Catholics most likely.
That's probably true.

Endless Obsession 04-02-2005 03:15 PM

I just learned that before this pope there was a pope who died after 20 days. Thats gotta be really depressing for the catholic community.

He's the head of the Catholic church. Above every other priest, bishop, etc.

Is that Steve Howe in your avatar?

He is the voice of god on earth if you're Catholic.

magicbus 04-02-2005 03:25 PM
For Catholics, he's God's representative on Earth. For non-Catholics, this particular Pope played rather a large role in the weakening and downfall of Communism in Eastern Europe, so he's more significant than the average Pope. As he was the 3rd longest serving Pope ever, he's also influenced global politics and ideas more than most people over the last 25 years or so.
I didn't know about the "God's representative" thing. But you're right, he was also a good influence on communism and other political issues. He was a good pope.

So if he told all catholics to kill themselves would they have to do it?

if so power++

Six Foot Revolver 04-02-2005 03:29 PM

I'm quite suprised you two did not know this

Come on, he liked break dancing.

I'm not Roman Catholic, I'm PNCC (long story... in a nutshell, we are Catholic but do not care about the Pope or the Vatican because we were formed on dissent of the Roman Catholic church).

I thought he was a great humanitarian. He even had an assassination attempt on him and he personally forgave his shooter. He has personally apologized on behalf of the church for its mistakes.

He'll be missed, definitely.

I'm willing to bet if he phrased it right, a ton of them would.
Yeah.
Mine too. He rules.

Jom 04-02-2005 03:49 PM
I got into an argument yesterday with a Catholic friend, so I'm being careful. :upset:
I'm sure it was unintentional... you're one of the few people here who is always up for some form of discussion.

Illmatic 04-02-2005 03:55 PM
I've got mixed feelings about him. On the one hand, he was anti-gay rights, abortion, contraception (which could have done wonders in Africa), and the ordination of women priests. Then again he consistently spoke out against violence, war, and played a large role in the breakup of the USSR in Eastern Europe. Although he apologised for mistakes made by the Church, he also conspicuously really failed to take charge of the Catholic Priest/paedophilia scandal, which I think was really unacceptable. But given my beliefs (or lack of them) the fact that I care about this at all means that he was better than the average Pope. If there's any Catholics here who are offended by this, then please don't be, by the way. I got into an argument yesterday with a Catholic friend, so I'm being careful. :upset:
Who doesn't speak out against violence and war, though?

With a few exceptions, of course.

Illmatic 04-02-2005 04:05 PM

So he was good compared to the average Pope.

Jom 04-02-2005 04:09 PM
So he was good compared to the average Pope.
Hmm. Postcount?

lunch998 04-02-2005 04:13 PM

He was even open towards the surviving Jews of the Holocaust, and tried to make amends with the Eastern Orthodox Church(I believe that was him).

Jom 04-02-2005 04:16 PM

ATTN: Med

:curious:

Does all your knowledge stem from classes or personally wanting to learn more? Or both?

Because you know a ton about world issues :envious:

Med57's fact of the week.

Make it happen oh wise one. I miss having informative teachers giving me my knowledge

Walrus Gumboot 04-02-2005 04:42 PM
Heh...I'm lucky at the moment in that I've got two very good history teachers, who focus more on actually understanding the syllabus, and trends in what we're studying, rather than focusing really narrowly on certain issues, and just making us learn the basic facts. I'm also very interested in world issues and news though, so quite a lot outside of what I need to do for school, yes. My Mum's a journalist as well, so you can hardly miss what's going on in the world in my house, as it's always a topic of conversation pretty much.
That's really cool, are you going into politics? O.o

Jom 04-02-2005 04:46 PM

Ah, thanks for the explanation.

magicbus 04-02-2005 04:46 PM

In my history class we were talking about a European arms treaty, and my teacher started the lecture with "20 years ago today, Gorbachev taught the band to play". Nobody got the reference but me :D

Illmatic 04-02-2005 04:54 PM
Yeah, definitely. Personally I'd also put him above a huge amount of world leaders, in spite of his social beliefs (homosexuality, abortion, stem cell research etc), but that may just be me. I think people are overblowing how great he was, and how positive his reign as Pope was, but that's always inevitable after someone dies (just look at Reagan). I'm not saying he was perfect or anything, but people with that sort of power, and yet with comparatively little means of enforcing it, tend to avoid telling people exactly what they think in such open ways.
It's definately the halo effect. Reagan was a schmuck. A likable schmuck, but a schmuck.

Also, I too am interested in going into politics, even if I don't have the money or connections to do it.

That was a test. I defy those who attempt to know more about football during the last decade.

I still love the maths lesson I had where our teacher refered each possible answer to drum rythyms
