Dude I'm jk fag.
Oh, cool. |
Back to Katatonia, apart from strongly disagreeing that they're doom, I actually only liked Tonight's Decision. I don't know why but sometimes an album just clicks with you. Even though later albums were similar I didn;t get into them at all.
Having said that, they are the worst live band I've ever seen. Worse that May'feedback'Hem, worse than Fear 'prerecorded guitar parts and crap vox' Factory. Even worse than Mortician. |
They don't seem to have too much stage presence from live vids I've seen of them.
Traditional doom >>> Old school death >>>>>> everything else
what exactly is "traditional doom"? like i said, i'm a doom noob. would it be like Pentagram? |
Candlemass
|
haha how did i forget them? i have a hard copy of Nightfall and reviewed it....
:p |
Very good Kage.
Traditional doom is doom metal in its purest, non-crossover form. It is mostly slow, riff-based "downer" metal which was influenced by Black Sabbath, Pentagram as well as the NWOBHM movement. Typical examples include Pentagram, Saint Vitus, Trouble and Candlemass. Four "waves" have so far been recognised in the history of traditional doom: the first one started with the originators of the entire genre, the proto-doom bands Black Sabbath and Pentagram; the second one dates from the mid-1980s, especially in the work of Saint Vitus and Candlemass; the third one started with the success of Cathedral's debut album Forest of Equilibrium; and the fourth has been affiliated with Reverend Bizarre. Also Epic doom is often used as a description for traditional doom bands with a stronger medieval and/or fantasy influences in lyrics. It is quite common that these bands present a more progressive style. Also, vocals have a much more narrative, epic, or even theatrical presence. Epic doom traces its roots through more traditional metal such as Manowar and Iron Maiden in addition to emulating the concepts of pre-doom bands such as Black Sabbath. Some of today's most popular doom metal bands with this epic feel are veterans Candlemass and Solitude Aeturnus. lol wiki |

They are surely much better than Marduk and Dark Funeral.
Cathedral's debut album Forest of Equilibrium
One of the best albums I've ever heard. \m/ |
I think everything Cathedral did after Forest of Equilibrium is much better.
|
i should probably go back and listen to reverend bizarre again
first time i listened to one of their albums i thhought it sucked but that was like one of the first few doomy albums i hear or whatrb |
*namedrops In The Rectory Of The Bizarre Reverend yet again*
Only one I have by them that I liked so far, but it's absolutely fantastic. |
that's the one i've heard
anyway i am going to namedrop Warning! yay namderprrOo! because Watching from a Distance is ****ing awesome. The Strength to Dream is great too but seriously excellent clean vokillz |

I felt that way for a long time, but I like FoE as much as TCB and TEM. And yes, Warning owns. |
Reverend Bizarre is great. They're the only trad. doom band I listen to. Candlemass is alright in small doses but after a while I start thinking, "am I really still listening to this?"
|
the production on Nightfall sort of kills the heaviness on some of the songs
|
I never got into Watching from a Distance idono
|
Kage have you heard Solitude Aeturnus? Although I'd be willing to bet that you'd hate them.
|
Solitude Aeturnus are good, good, gooooood. Well the one album I've listened too, I haven't heard anything else yet :( But that shall change!
|
Which album?
|
I really don't like Rob Lowe for some reason, but I still really really really like their cover of Heaven and Hell.
|
Rob Lowe is my favorite singer by far, but I don't think their HaH cover is that great. Hah

This is kind of vague i know but one song off Ancient Dreams is a complete rip off of another on Nightfall. I'll post it when i figure it out but the song on AD is a slowed down version of the same riffs/structure on Nightfall. @pate yeah i knew most of that stuff, i heard SV and didn't really like them that much tbh. But i've never heard Trouble, and Solitude Aeturnus have been on my "wishlist" for a while. i didn't know they were a doom metal band though.
the production on Nightfall sort of kills the heaviness on some of the songs
what about it specifically? i like the production... |
I have a chance to pick up Skepticism- Stormcrowfleet and I vaguely remember some people talking about it itt. How is it?
|
i'm really excited now about getting some doom/stoner stuff in the next few weeks now. my collection is sorely lacking :(
|
Which album?
That'd be their debut, Into the Depths of Sorrow. If you haven't already, definitely check it out. |
I felt that way for a long time, but I like FoE as much as TCB and TEM.
And yes, Warning owns.
Without a doubt the best album released this year for me. NP: Warning - Faces |
The best album released for a good 8 or 9 years.
I've had it for a year now and still listen to it every day. |
I don't listen to it every day but more than once a week this year for certain.
|

Absolutely I have it. SA are probably my favorite band. |

It's ****ing great and an essential release if you like funeral doom. :) |
