Tool. :thumb:
They used to be my favorite, it got pretty boring after a couple years though. I also used to think that Maynard was the best singer ever, now I know that there are many many guys who are better. I'm still anticipating a new album though.

Jude 09-22-2005 05:59 PM

Back on topic, I was just now figuring out Face of Melinda on bass...I have everything from the first electric chord to the end of the song, but that's only about half of it. Anyone have a good bass tab for the beginning part (which is really complex and driving me nuts).

Deth 09-22-2005 06:44 PM

Have you tried Powertabs? They haven't let me down for Opeth bass tabs yet.

Well, once if you count the lack of The Twilight is My Robe...

Darkness 09-22-2005 07:03 PM

Ah... Deth... new avatar... it will take some getting use to, I may accidently read your posts now. :P

Don't worry, I've been through that phase. Silly me, the best singers are Mikael Akerfeldt and Freddie Mercury.

Didn't you tell me that yesterday? If so, you need to come up with new material. :thumb:

Yeah, new material. Bleaks overrated. :D

I seriously must have said that about 20 times today. Ever since I saw Bender say it in Futurama, I've been saying it constantly.

Maynard James Keenan is still quite high on my list, but so are Akerfeldt, Vortex, Garm, Vintersorg, Jon Davis, Howard Jones, Spencer Chamberlain (God of harsh vocals), and M. Shadows.

I think Mikael is the best metal vocalist alive right now. He can scream, growl, and sing better than any other guy I've ever heard. The only man who can compete with him is Sven de Caluwe in terms of growling.

Glad to see that another person agrees with what I believe. You can see his wide range of vocals in Bleak if you haven't already. For the first 3 minutes he's doing that totally evil growl and then quickly switches to that beautiful singing voice. I absolutely love it.

Darkness 09-22-2005 09:10 PM

Steven Wilson does some of that.

Yeah Mike and Maynard rank really high on my list, and although Mike is probably better, I.. nevermind.

Det_Nosnip 09-22-2005 09:17 PM
Spencer Chamberlain (God of harsh vocals)
Who?

Shadows 09-22-2005 09:20 PM
Who?
According to the almighty Google, he's the vocalist of Underoath.

Det_Nosnip 09-22-2005 10:52 PM

 That's great...."god of harsh vocals." Pat BOONE has harsher vocals!

Darkness 09-22-2005 10:54 PM

I don't think Mikeals growl can be beaten. Its so crisp and... clean... if that makes any sense.

Mizuzack 09-22-2005 11:02 PM

I like his growl in the newer albums such as Ghost Reveries than in say Morningrise for example.

Darkness 09-22-2005 11:03 PM

Yeah, his growl has improved over time greatly. Hes the highlight of the new album.

Loved his vocal range on the new album you're quite right.

the2stranger 09-23-2005 05:00 AM

there'coming to the Netherlands too in december, can't wait to see them again :D

Thor 09-23-2005 05:45 AM

I'm so glad that they are coming to NC, no one ever comes here. Ever. My state sucks.

Simon__Thats_All 09-23-2005 07:29 AM

Your state sucks?! I live in Canberra, Australia. We get no one... Ever! I'll have to travel at least 3 hours to see anyone decent if they ever bother coming to my country.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I couldn't believe that it was his actual voice when I first heard Opeth. I was sure he must have used some kind of vocal distortion or messed with the recording.

DaveTheAmazing 09-23-2005 09:57 AM
Be warned that very few of their songs are as easy to listen to (for the uninitiated) as TBYF. They do lots and lots of 'cookie monster' vocals. This is assuming you aren't into metal. For their softer stuff, check out all of the album D amnation, Reqiuem, Silhouette, Madrigal, Face of Melinda, Benighted, Patterns in the Ivy, Harvest, Isolation Years, Atonement, and Hours of Wealth. For general recommendations, listen to everyone else.
I likes metals

Twice if you count Face of Melinda :( They only have guitar for it.

Oh well, I'll try and work it out myself.

Panvium 09-23-2005 12:34 PM

recently got into Opeth and found out there going to be in VA(if they haven't come already),near where i live, but the tickets are sold out...

Blasting "Nectar" at the moment...

Why does Opeth kick so much ass? I guess no one will ever know.

Simon__Thats_All 09-23-2005 05:13 PM

Because their song writing ability is second to none.

Special Brew 09-23-2005 05:17 PM
Because their song writing ability is second to none.
Good song writing is purely opinion. I'd say it's Opeth's originality for sure, because not everyone will agree that they are good song writers, but they are original for a fact.

RouteOne 09-23-2005 05:20 PM

I think their earlier lyrics were much more put together and made more sense. Their latests ones i'm not too impressed with.
I think their earlier lyrics were much more put together and made more sense. Their latests ones i'm not too impressed with.
I think all of Opeth's lyrics were well put together, but I dislike the lyrics on Ghost Reveries. I don't think I will ever get into that album, there's too much singing. The only song I tolerate is Reverie/Harlequin Forest. I like the ''heavy Opeth with a little bit of singing'' better. That's what makes his voice so extraordinary. Because he barely did it. On Ghost Reveries he sings a lot, and it doesn't sound the same. It sounded better when it was only a few lines. (Orchid)

Don't get my wrong, Mikaels vocals on D@mnation are amazing, but that's D@mnation. I expected Ghost Reveries to be way heavier then it turned out to be. There's a lot of clean vocals on Blackwater Park, but certain songs/riffs make up for that in the album, which makes it come together all in all. I think Ghost Reveries is Opeth's lightest album.

The Grand Conjuration comes so close to being heavy both musically and lyrically, and that's the heaviest song on the album. I've always known Opeth for their brutality. Ghost Reveries lacks that, there's not enough double kick or violent riffs, and the Keyboards really don't suit Opeth like I thought. They're okay, but... :upset:

When I think about it, I appreciate Deliverance a LOT more now ;)

Kaiwaz 09-23-2005 06:16 PM

I didn't mean anything harsh to GR, I'm obsessed with Orchid. Probably one of my favorite albums of all time. :thumb:

Kaiwaz 09-23-2005 06:19 PM
Damnation?
D@mnation is heavier, only because of the lyrics IMO. Ghost Reveries tries to be hard, you die hard Opeth fans know what I'm talking about.

Definately. I listen to The Master's Apprentices regularly. :thumb:
