Scissor Sisters. I'm thinking their Pink Floyd cover is ace.
|
That Magic Numbers album is one of the most distinctly average albums I've heard in a while. I mean, it's definitely not bad... it's a good album, but at no point does anything on there exceed "just good". And it all sounds a bit samey to me.
Other than that, I've been digging Quitter, Architecture in Helsinki, Mr Bungle, and Bruce Kaphan. |
From the songs I've heard, that Magic Numbers album seems to me to be "pretty good".
|
Yeah, "pretty good" is about where I'd place it. Not quite as fond of it as Iai seems to be, but I wouldn't call it just average either.
|
I've been listening to a lot of REM's 90's stuff latley. Particularly there last three albums. Including the latest, Around The Sun. I just keep hearing stuff in those albums I overlooked before. I really love New Advantures in Hi -Fi, too. Vastly underrated, IMO. I don't care much for Monster, and am just plain worn out on Out of Time. So I'm not listening to those. But the others just have me hooked. And of course, Automatic for the People. Which is a perfect record....
|
New Adventures in Hi-Fi is underrated, but it's their last good album. Monster was pretty weak, but nowhere near as bad as the awful last three.
You know, I tended to agree with that until recently. But I gave the new one a fighting chance and then started listening to Up again, which led me back to Reveal. And something just clicked for me. Glad it did because now I can enjoy them again, lol. It was a tough go for awhile. I just took a listen to Reveal and am loving it . I don't know what happened? But I'm glad it happened nonetheless :thumb: |
Dream Theater - Octavarium
The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots (5.1) I've loved Yoshimi for so long that I'm not sure why it took me this long to get the 5.1 mix. The experimentation with multiple channels makes the album such a more absorbing experience. |
That's what I think of REM too. Their 80s material is absolutely great, and their first 5 WB albums were good as well. Up and Reveal on the other just bore me to death and Around The Sun is very weak as well.
|
I tried really hard to get into them, since I'm a massive R.E.M. fan, but there's something about them that doesn't do it for me. I just prefer the more sparse, minimal stuff they were doing in the early 80's.
Oh man, that's great stuff! Good thing about a band like REM is you really can pick and choose because of there long history and diverse output. Murmur, Reckoning, and Fables of the Reconstruction are brillant records. I can only imagine how original and fresh they sounded at the time they came out. And they manage to rock. Life's Rich Pageant is most likely my fave, although I know they took heat at the time for going with a mainstream producer and turning up the electric guitars. But no matter, I love it. Document as well. Green is my least favorite. But that's a small gripe considering the good. I think it's Micheal Stipe that is attracting me to the new stuff. His lyrics, vocal style, and perspective just always seems to be evolving, and at the moment I've become very intrigued by what he's been doing since Up. It's like rediscovering the band through him. Really enjoying them and myself doing it, too. :) |
Yes, his drumming is really good. That's proabably what makes the newer REM so dull. The drum machines don't necessarily make them sound as good as the other albums.
|
The Dismemberment Plan's Emergency And I has been on heavy rotation the past few days.
Also getting into Notorious B.I.G's album Life After Death (Ready To Die is possibly my favourite rap album ever but I didn't like Life After Death too much on first listen so I'm giving it another chance) |
Bjork - Homogenic
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless and my newest purchase: A Silver Mount Zion Memorial Orchestra and Tra-La-La Band With Choir - Born Into Trouble as the Sparks Fly Upward I sat in the Target parking lot and listened to lattermost. It's eargasmic. |
Converge - Jane Doe
Coheed & Cambria - The Second Stage Turbine Blade |
Rage against the machine,
The Arcade Fire, Rise Against |
I'm digging "Bitches Brew" very much right now. |
I'm really far too lazy for this. Hey, you've got a local mod here to clean this up.
|
I definitely applaud them for constantly reinventing their sound and challening themselves - I doubt I'd like them as much if they had released thirteen Murmurs - but there's just something lacking about the new albums that doesn't grab me like the first few do. Maybe it's the absence of Bill Berry, who is one of the best drummers of all time.

Yes, his drumming is really good. That's proabably what makes the newer REM so dull. The drum machines don't necessarily make them sound as good as the other albums.
The loss of Berry hurt. I think perhaps they didn't feel like the same band after he left. I've never quite forgiven him as a fan for doing so, either. But what can you do, ya know. REM has certainly been a different band since his departure. At least on record. I saw them the last time they swung by Los Angeles and they were just incredible. The same great live band they have always been. Perhaps after all these years they really are just about pleasing themselves now? Which I guess is something they've kind of earned. I just really found myself missing them, quite honestly. I hadn't given the newer records much consideration, either. So i started listening. If you guys wanna give it another shot I would suggest starting with Reveal and the more accessible tracks on Up. And then move on to Around The Sun. Maybe just listen passively at first. You might start to hear something you can connect with. |
Dredg's 'Catch Without Arms' is wonderful. There's somewhat less concept/abstractness than El Cielo, but it's an absolutely beautiful album.
|
Massive Attack - Protection
Why does no one ever talk about this album? It's fantastic. |
I've checked out Sun Ra: Super-Sonic Jazz and I have to say I'm impressed. It's what's described as space jazz. It is jazz but with weird and crazy elements thrown in that make it all weird. Check it.
|
I am really loving Gorillaz Demon Days. I think on the whole album there is one song I dont really like.
|
Been listening to alot of rap/hip-hop today, artists/groups such as Mobb Deep, Jay Z, Ice T, and Nas. I should really get some of their albums.
|
King Tubbys Meets Rockers Uptown by Augustus Pablo is a really cool record that I downloaded yesterday.
The Dresden Dolls by the band of the same name is another great record that I put on for the first time yesterday. Yesterday was a really good day for music. |
Dresden Dolls are awesome.
Today I'm enjoying Coldplay, Maximo Park and The Magic Numbers. |

All I can say is that it is a grand moment because . . .
I'm rockin out to 'The Faint' today and chics dig scars! What happens now? |
I've been playing the new Spoon album much of late, along with the Pony's new release, Celebration Castle.
Massive Attack - Protection
Why does no one ever talk about this album? It's fantastic.
Agreed. It's overshadowed by what's around it is all. Plus that cover of Light My Fire is horrible. Today I dug the new Shpongle, heavily. It's unreal. That's now two 5-star albums released on June 13th. 2005 is absolutely owning so far. Best year this decade, easily. I also listened to The Mint Chicks' new album. Wasn't impressed at all. |
Over the last 4 days or so I've listened to a lot of stuff:
Captain Beefheart - Safe As Milk Handsome Boy Modelling School - So... How's Your Girl? Gorillaz - Demon Days The White Stripes - Get Behind Me Satan Deltron 3030 - Deltron 3030 Rob D Jeff Buckley Ryan Adams - Cold Roses Modest Mouse - Good News... Bloc Party - Silent Alarm David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust Beefheart and Handsome Boy for the first time. "To Buy List" +++ |

Tortoise, Slint and Gastr Del Sol rock my current playlist
|
Nation of Ulysses kick so much ass.
|
Agreed. It's overshadowed by what's around it is all. Plus that cover of Light My Fire is horrible.
Especially after "Heat Miser", which is one of the best songs I've ever heard. Today I've dug: Stars Miles Davis The Jolly Rogers Massive Attack |
Circulating between both Gorillaz's albums, giving the new one a just listen
|
Hmm, haven't been around these parts in a while. School and friends and non-computer hobbies have been stealing my computer time.
But anyway, I've been diggin': The Olivia Tremor Control The Starlight Mints Tub Ring Faith No More Cannibal Ox Kayo Dot Denali etc. My brother recently gave me his old computer, which has my old stash of mp3s. Some of bands I've half-forgotten about, like The Bees and De Facto. I'm especially diggin' the rediscovery of The Bees. |
the pod for the day
Manic Street Preachers
Yeah Yeah Yeahs Tracy Bonham The Organ (great show) Chics would dig these ladies!! Electrelane- (YES DEVIOUS) And still. . . . . The Faint rock my world |

|
Did you actually purchase the album? It doesn't seem obtainable here in the states. |
Massive Attack
Rise Against The Mars Volta |
The Jolly Rogers
Have you found/gotten their demo yet? I've been scavaging for them on soulseek for awhile and havent found anything by them. Lately I have been listening to Ester Drang. heavily. They are a nice dreamy post-rock-esque band. |
