Actually, my grandparents sort of got me into Tool.
I'd heard "Schism" on the radio over the summer, while doing volunteer work at the university I now attend...and I was blown away. So I mentioned that I wouldn't mind getting this album by Tool. And at Christmas, my grandparents got my Lateralus. My grandmother said the name was easy to remember, and she heard I wanted it, so there we go. This was Christmas 2001
aww thanks grandma :thumb: |
I was brought into tool by APC, after being reccomended by a friend. I had heard sober and Aenima before getting the whole Aenima album, my friend did a talk on aenima's lyrics in english (he got an A* lolrzzz).
But AJIG rough ride? Papa roach - still loves infest :) Linkin park - Hybrid theory will always be a good album, they may have gone downhill after but meh. Deftones - White pony is an amazing album, Around the fur is also cool, i should check out more i suppose. Not exactly a rough ride me feels.
I was referring more to the big black void of no music in my life before then. And JoZ, you should try the album trick with your grandma mor eoften. Try and get some really obscure black metal album this year. And Deftones still own to this day. Though LP i've lost the will to lsiten to, and Papa Roach become boring. |

Its amazing I think. Ive heard a bit of Interpol, they sound decent. Which brings me to Oceansize. Ive heard Cataclism i think its called, and its great! Can anyone tell me what Efloresce sounds like thru? Ive been meeaning to pick it up, but hesistated at the last minute. |
OT: clearvision, is Antics any good? i've heard the 3 released tracks, and only Evil has stood out to me as an interesting track. The other two sound too similar.
PDA was a cool track though |
I may have told this one before, but I first heard Sober in '99 when MTV used to play some good music videos and was blown away. SO I looked it up, found out that it was on the album Undertow, bought it, and I've been hooked ever since. I got Ænima about a week later, and I got Lateralus a day or two after it came out. I was hooked to Ænima from the start but Lateralus took some getting used to.

Sorry to butt in, but any ETA on the new album at all? I would search through the 220 (!) pages but I have school tomorrow.....

Fallen Angel
Nah, man. Nothing yet. Believe me, if there's a new CD comin out then you'll notice it right away, people'll be going crazy and the album itself would likely get its own thread. People have heard June at the earliest though. Hope that helps. :thumb: |

Yeah i think if you like C'mere you'll like the whole album. It is all pretty similair...
Oceansize are actually great, incubus-floyd-radiohead is how i would describe them. Their site is http://www.sizeofanocean.com . The song you heard was catalyst, not one of my fav's but still a cool track. Please do check out the album, it is great. |
This is C'mere http://s28.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0RC9D9X9JCL1539L8CSVCXOT1X
If you liek this you'll probs enjoy the album. I'll upload one of my favourite oceansize songs... |

Oceansize - you wish |
Adam Jones
Adam Jones is a decent guitarist. Dont worry im not here to thrash him :thumb: , i respect him immensely and just because he uses lots of guitar effects doesnt mean he sucks at all. Some guitarists are extremely talented, take any of the obvious, Hendrixes, Jimmy Pages, Stevie Ray-Vaughns, Tom Morellos. But one thing that i love about Adam Jones is that he doesnt need balsy, shredding riffs to tug at your soul and move you. So he may not be the most talented, but i think it says more in that he's been so sucessfull and dosent need amazing skills to prove anything.

Oceansize - you wish
Thanx Vision. Il Prob be buying the album next. They are definatly progressive. |
I have heard that if you play Tool's "Lateralus" album in a certain order it is one big song pretty much, but I forgot the order. Anyone know it?

Yeah, I agree, although I think he is very talented. I love his style. The way he incorporates certain chord progressions along with rhythmically unique riffs and the effective use of different non-chord tones to build riffs and create a song, with true progression, I find incredible. The way the songs branch of into different directions, but always return to some kind of likeness is genius. |

Well, first off, Tom Morello isn't anything special technically. But you're right, neither is Adam Jones. But IMO, Adam Jones has by far the best SOUND in his guitar. The distortion is just so right. Not only that, but he his brilliant at creating an atmosphere. But back to your point, technical-wise, I'd say that Vai and Petrucci are the apex. |
Shred wise, Tom owns the hell out of Adam. Proof? Know your enemy and Darkness solos, plus on the new Audioslave record he said "their will be plenty of guitar shredding for everyone"
Sorry off topic... In reply to what Kage was talking about, the way he builds songs, have you noticed that they almost always return to the intro riff/riffs? |
I have heard that if you play Tool's "Lateralus" album in a certain order it is one big song pretty much, but I forgot the order. Anyone know it?
And so here it is....Again: 6,7,5,8,4,9,3,10,2,11,1,12,13 ("The Lateralus Prophecy") or 6,7,5,8,4,9,13,1,12,2,11,3,10 ("The Holy Gift") I just copy/pasted that off a site so sorry if there's a mistake in there or something. |
I apologize for my laziness, but can anyone tab the single string opening riff for Lateralus. I just love that opening.
|
We should have a thread (locked so no one can reply) with the alternate order and news on the new album in it.
I heard about Tool from a Pearl Jam forum and eventually lent Ænima and Undertow from a friend at school. |

I think his talent is definately in song writing, voice leading, and harmonizing. He knows what chords create moods and what chords to create to lead into the next mood. Also he knows which non-chord tones to move into the next chord change. It's a different kind of talent than shredding. The solo on Parabola is an excellent example of the leading that I'm talking about. |

They've said it themselves they are an album band. The songs as seperate entities are great, But put them together and listen to them all at once, its a bigger and more fulfilling experience. This means if you are downloading these songs to go buy the album  Listen to Enima, then Lateralus, then Undertow then Opiate, imo. |

I really hope this isn't the case, but i heard a rumour that Maynard was converting to christianity, and there are doubts that he will continue with the band, and even doubts that the new record will go ahead........(not a regular tool fan, so sorry if that's late news)

I might have to try that, i bought aenima the other day, but I also have the other albums. One thing that I was slightly dissapointed by was that have the british version so the booklet is different to the usa one which i heard was really cool. Oh well.
They'd better play in England soon after the new album release if they know whats good for them.
Yeah, I really hope they do. |
I hope they stop by Edmonton again....
