Does Nick even have a solo career?
 I think he's more into driving cars

Leper 02-03-2007 04:23 PM

I didn't even know Rick had a solo career. What albums do you recommend, Riva?

Yield 02-03-2007 04:27 PM

I haven't listened to any of Rick's solo stuff, but I think Wet Dream is supposed to be good. But don't take my word for it, remember I haven't listened to it.

Leper 02-03-2007 04:39 PM

Haha with a name like that it has to be good!

Montana 02-03-2007 05:01 PM

I've heard four songs from Wet Dream and they were all good but Pink's Song is my favorite(of the four I heard). I downloaded it but still haven't listened to Broken China.

rippa32 02-03-2007 07:40 PM

Haha it seems those albums are Nick's solo career in name only. Did he have a lot to do with the writing process?

Surf 02-03-2007 07:57 PM

Doubt it. I never saw him as much of a writer.

As someone said above, he was always more interested in cars and racing. He seems a really nice guy though.

I remember watching live 8, and he was getting interviewed by some young girl. She asks him whether there's been any tears back stage between the floyd members. "Tears?" he said, "Good god no; we're british". Made me laugh.

Yield 02-03-2007 08:04 PM

Yeah, Nick to me has always struck me as the nicest of the five (including Syd)

Jim 02-04-2007 02:46 AM

I predict Jason will say Broken China :P

Which is actually growing on me a bit. By the by, I got Obscured By Clouds and it's quite good. Other than the rather dull instrumentals (it is a soundtrack afterall, so this is expected), the rest of the tracks are quite poppy (for their time) and enjoyable.

I'll keep rotating it in my deck :thumb:

rippa32 02-04-2007 03:41 AM

Ive been looking out for earlier floyd albums still but no go. Its all Dark Side and Wall etc.

lol Funny but so true.
Roger wrote us in an e mail that for his 64th birthday in September, he got a call from David for the first time in over 20 years wishing him a happy birthday.

Now there is a love/hate relationship.

Jim 02-04-2007 03:45 AM

This is a shame :(

I know most K-mart and Targets don't even sell Dark Side. JB's where I do all my shopping and they have a magnificent range. Is there one near you?

edit: to rippa by the way :P

There are many earlier albums for sale on used record internet stores, but only problem is they charge a fortune for the older out of print stuff.

Jim 02-04-2007 04:02 AM

There's probably some discount CD stores that would have a wide range for sure. Or you could seek out a vinyl shop :smoke:

By the way RedDebil, that story about David calling Roger on his birthday is very sweet :)

Jo Shoe Wah 02-04-2007 05:28 AM

Sweet indeed.

Though lyrically, The Division Bell might not be as compelling as their Roger era stuff, I really like High Hopes, for the lyrics too.

Sounds very much like they describe the relationship/what tore them apart.

Particularly these lines jump out at me:

Looking beyond the embers of bridges glowing behind us
To a glimpse of how green it was on the other side
Steps taken forwards but sleepwalking back again
Dragged by the force of some inner tide

Burnt bridges, how green it was on the other side (before the conflicts), and then moving past it but still drawn back to what they had before.

I think compared to a Roger written song, the lyrics are still quite well written. :)

What do you guys think about this album as far as lyrics go? I mean you can tell from this and David's Solo stuff that he really went ahead and built the musical side up to the balance he had intended, but yeah...i like them. :p

My local vinyl shop is usually a matter of whatever someone has sold to him recently. But unfortunately its a fair ways out. And my "local" JB-HiFi is even further.

Did you know...it was all going to go so wrong for you
And did you see it was all going to be so right for me
Why did we tell you then
You were always the golden boy then
And that youd never lose that light in your eyes

Hey you...did you ever realise what youd become
And did you see that it wasnt only me you were running from
Did you know all the time but it never bothered you anyway
Leading the blind while I stared out the steel in your eyes

^^ Poles Apart from TDB... I think it's more oriented towards Waters than any other songs, but I'm really not sure. Sounds to me like it.

Danger Bird 02-04-2007 11:01 AM

You know Rippa, I know you said you like to have the whole package, but you could download some of those albums from me and buy them later.

Surf 02-04-2007 12:14 PM

But see, as good as Gilmour gets, Waters just crushes him lyrically.

The one above was about the inter-Floyd fighting? try this:

When the sleigh is heavy
And the timber wolves are getting bold
You look at your companions
And test the water of their friendship
With you toe
They significantly edge
Closer to the gold
Each man has his price Bob
And yours was pretty low
History is short the sun just a minor star
The poor man sells his kidneys
In some colonial bazaar
Que sera sera

Just so much more skill and finesse in his writing.

Danger Bird 02-04-2007 12:20 PM

Jesus those guys were bitter.

Surf 02-04-2007 12:24 PM

Yeah, but Waters is bitter in a more eloquent way.

Hamilcar 02-04-2007 01:02 PM
Yeah, but Waters is bitter in a more eloquent way.

At least it seems that most of the bitterness has faded away over time. Life's too short to hold grudges forever.

MattSharpIsCool 02-04-2007 04:08 PM

Roger is probably a better lyrics writer, but I think David can hold his own.

Jo Shoe Wah 02-04-2007 04:17 PM

Shit yeah, Roger has a certain way with his phrasing as well as his obviously talented metaphor, imagery and personification, and as you said has alot more finesse.

Though Gilmour i think still has something going in the lyric department, i hope that can develop to the point where it's like his expression through the musical side of things. <_<

that's so cold. As arrogant as Roger comes off, I've just always liked him best.

rippa32 02-04-2007 09:04 PM

I agree, its not whether you agree with his views, its how damn good his lyrics are.

CaptainWaits 02-04-2007 09:12 PM

How good is "Relics"?? I saw it at a Future Shop for 10 bucks...

ghettoeddo 02-04-2007 11:15 PM

$10 for any album is just about worth it.

well if you like the band's other work i mean.

rippa32 02-04-2007 11:21 PM

I agree. It's mainly just singles from the Barret era but it also has a studio version of Careful With That Axe Eugene which would be ocol.
