/reads through thread

I really don't see why this discussion of spamming, feeling that one is or isn't a "useful... productive poster," etc., and all that other crap is still going on. It was discussed and should be dealt with. It is really not that difficult of a concept to grasp.

Don't you think that the thread is a hell of a lot better now than it has been? I can come back at any point over the course of 24 hours, and see that, at a maximum, I have to read five pages to see what's going on.

There were two instances when the thread reached a new page in less than ten minutes. That was fucking ridiculous. People bitch about the AIM chat because "it moves too fast to my liking." Well, you have to reach a compromise somewhere down the line, because nobody owns this thread, so it can be easily shut down, closed, and forgotten about. Would spam increase in other areas? Likely, but that's the price people pay. Destiny is calling... uh, nevermind :p

Anyways, I'm glad Yogi brought it up. I like not having to go back ten pages in the morning to see posts of:

OMFG HI2U
OMG HI2U BACK
Sup thread
STFU, ur gae amirite?
omg ursorite
I no Imrite
[decent topic to discuss]
Meh, take it to Politics/Other music/the chat/etc.
STFU fag
... and so on.

Finally, the thread is starting to reach a point where someone will post a topic, and everyone reads it, it's just that people are finally exhibiting some self-control and realizing that they can't put in an empty one-liner just so they think everyone will recognize that he/she posted. Everyone is guilty of that. People like seeing that you responded to something, but if you don't have anything decent to say at all, then that opens the door for empty, pointless postcount increases. It's basically less severe than spamming the other forums, like Mind Revolution and sociallyimpaired do. They think it doesn't go undetected, but oh yeah, they'll have their postcount reset or face a ban. It's just that the mods don't care about things like that.

After talking with a few people, it's obvious that the state of the thread began deteriorating with the implementation of rep and the whoring that ensued. I remember the early stages of the first thread, when people like Rob were posting. I then took a hiatus, but then was invited back, and then the thread just started bottoming out. Now that we have rep v.2.0, things are nowhere near as painful as before.

What's sad is that people like me surpassed a lot of the regulars in the old thread (Bobo, for instance) because at least half of any posting that these people have done was in the community thread. It's disappointing when the original regular members don't have the desire to post here anymore because any visits they have, they see spamming and substanceless discussion. You can't tell me that when it takes less than ten minutes to reach a new page, that it's not spam.

With all this discussion, people are getting increasingly pissy. Just relax, this place doesn't own your soul. A lot of things are out of your control. Make due with what you have, and just accept the negative things. Yeah, I get annoyed by a lot of the sporadic posters here who are attention whores (you know who I'm alluding to, think of a user whose username is mispelled). They post here, and people ignore them. It's really not that big of a deal. The discussion that warrants discussion will be talked about, and that will be the end of it.

Most of the people don't post or don't post as much now because they don't know what it's like to have an influx of new members spamming the hell out of something they instituted.

Someone has mentioned to me in passing via AIM that a lot of us know each other pretty well, then all these masses of people come in and think it's a place to spam. I have to agree.

I don't think any of us have our qualms about a big community. I'm also very glad that most people are beginning to exhibit some self-control.

It's just that some posters need to think more about what they are posting. If it's mindless (example: no one cares that you have to seek counseling because you're fucked up, so stop repeating it), then don't post it. If you have something positive to contribute (and there is such thing as positive spam in my eyes), then post it. You shouldn't have to think, "Oh, I shouldn't post this, but I'm going to do it anyway." Instead, I'm beginning to feel that people are starting to take peoples' wishes for less spam and more constructive posting seriously, and that's fantastic. Not every post has to be a friggin' essay, but at least have substance.

One thing that I notice and am guilty of is that when people enter the chat, they usually say hello, and maybe something else. That's not a problem, but then a whole bunch of people feel the need to say hello back, and at the very most, post a follow-up question. You don't have to lose the feeling of a community, just keep the crap out with the one-line "Hello " posts.

The worst argument that I absolutely hate to see is the "This is off-topic discussion, we can post what we want." No. Pitiful argument.

Also, just stop it with the "Oh, my posting has been challenged by the community, everyone's pointing the finger at me" horseshit. Stop whining. Apparently nobody picked up in the last thread that I was mocking people who say this, so let me be very direct: if you took that seriously, well, I don't know how to respond to that.

In essence, I'm glad that things are progressing towards a healthier community. Yeah, there will still be the sporadic idiot posters, but again, they can be ignored. However, if the thread starts regressing towards a spamfest, I would be all for deleting not only this thread, but the first one as well, as opposed to closing them and keeping the posts. Just stop whining about how you think everyone's out to get you. No one is questioning your integrity, we're all trying to be on the same page, so seriously, just stop taking what people say about you on a friggin' Internet forum to heart so much.

And with that, I'll conclude my catching up with the thread. Sup.

Well said, man. Well said. Have you considered moving to England? ;)

Also, sorry about stepping on your toes when it came to the YSI uploads thread.

Eh, but yeah...My comp crashed before, I'm still looking for maps of Liverpool, can't seem to find anything.
PLUS: I got a nice Black Sabbath Greatest Hits Guitar Tab book today, and a chrome slide, I love my bottle neck one, but this one is great

Bartender 04-22-2005 09:59 AM

Liverpool, eh. My flatmate lives in Widnes. Gone back there tonight actually, for a gig.

He also bought a new guitar recently. I think he has five now :-/

pigonthewing82 04-22-2005 10:02 AM

Yeah I need to get a slide, I'm currently using a Zippo lighter as one. You can create some really cool effects with it, but its not a very good slide.

IAJP 04-22-2005 10:04 AM

Five guitars...waha...

I have like 3 acoustics, but a lot of them need re-stringing, I have my strat which is my "experimental guitar" which is in random tunings, sometimes whichever letters I can think of ("FADBAD" etc) and my Les Paul, which I absolutley love...That's usually in standard tuning, and I always use this for gigs.

And I went out today, I saw an absolute beauty, 12 string Yamaha...I did well not to buy it, cheap as hell, only £80 actually.

But yeah, no jokes about Liverpool :upset:.

Pigonthewing:
How would you go about using a Zippo lighter as a slide? Unless your guitar is acoustic, I'd be incredibly careful about the overall finnish, a zippo lighter could really do some damage.

AND, I would post a picture of my two slides, one is litterally a neck of a broken green bottle, it's (well, was) my uncle's, and is older than me :p . The other is a Chrome Dunlop bright tone. Cheap, but it does the trick.

Bartender 04-22-2005 10:08 AM
Five guitars...waha...
Well, two electric guitars, one acoustic/electric, and two bass guitars (one five-string, one four-string).
Well, two electric guitars, one acoustic/electric, and two bass guitars (one five-string, one four-string).
I've always wanted to try a 5 string bass, there are a few reasons I could never get one though:
I don't have enough money to throw away at an instrument I'm not that good at, and don't play primarrily.
I already have a 4 string bass, allthough not very good, it has a decent(ish) range of sounds.
I can play my bassist's for free :p.

Nah you just use it as a regular slide only you have to hold it down with your finger so its not as easy to use. A couple people in the 60's did it, like Syd Barrett, you can use the Zippo to get really cool effects out of it too.

IAJP 04-22-2005 10:18 AM

I'll have a look into that.
For some reasons, I always feel homeade slides (or at least ones you didn't buy) sound a wee bit better than the ready made ones.
Just my opinion. :)

Heh, fair enough. He was a bassist in one band first, and then wanted to try guitar (which ended up with being in another band, I think). He didn't go out and buy multiple guitars, though; the 'electrocoustic' and the newest one he's bought just in the time I've known him (since October).

Reduced from £600 for various reasons.
Do you know what specific model he got? Was it Electrocousic or just Electric?
Electric - the acoustic was significantly less, and was bought a few months ago. I think the new one is a Yamaha Aes820, but that's just what I managed to get out of the hurried reply he gave me when I asked what it was.

My dad grew up in and around Liverpool (well, close), I think, for the first five or six years of his life at least. I'm not at all sure why though; his parents were from up around Newcastle, and moved back there after a few years. Not sure if he was joking.

My flatmate, being from Widnes, kinda views both Liverpool and Manchester with apathy - if he goes to Liverpool everyone treats him as if were from Manchester, and vice versa.

So I went to an exhibit at another college to check out the Petra exhibit.

Here is a link: Petra exhibit.

It was for extra credit, which is something I desperately need for this class.

Well, I have to say, I thought it was going to be boring as hell, but it was actually rather interesting. The inhabitants there were extremely skilled and crafted out various aqueducts and things... and all the channels expanded for miles and miles. I guess it's comparable to the Incans and the Mayans and their developments, even though the city was founded in the 14th century-ish.

Anyways, it was just cool. It wasn't discovered until the 19th century, so to go for over five-hundred centuries without being located on a map, especially of a city with such an amazing construction (everyone was built out of the cliffs in modern-day Jordan).

Unfortunately, the entire city was struck with a devestating earthquake in 363 AD, and so all that's left are the artifacts at said exhibit. I also learned about the lost wax method of sculpture.

I was just really surprised.

Wow, the Aes is a decent enough guitar I should say, I want a twelve string acoustic Yamaha so bad right now...It's like the only kind of guitar I'm missing, I have an electric, a Bass, an Acoustic and an electrocoustic. Maybe (deffinitley:p) for my birthday.

And I can see what you're saying, Widnes is kind of "Neither here nor there" it's a cool place though, from what I've seen of it. :)

To be honest, and I hope to God no-one in here is from Manchester, I don't really like them.
Generally speaking, they are incredibly loud, in your face, and raucous. I've had bad experiences, mostly to do with football, with them.

And no, I don't support Everton (But that was funny... :p )
Question: What's the general opinion on people from Manchester? Because one of my brother's faltmates didn't seem to think too highly of them :-/
To be honest, my experience with Mancs?/Mancunians? is limited. I've met some, but I've never spent any decent amount of time in Manchester that wasn't just catching a plane out of there. To me Manchester is just one of many vague southern cities that I know little about.

They make some good music occasionally, though.

IAJP 04-22-2005 10:56 AM

Nice to see a Bowie fan.
And yeah, I have that Clash Album, it's decent enough, and the Clash are possibly (maybe excepting the Stooges) the only Punk band I like.
