Yeah, but the Parabol/Parabola video blew my mind. I just loved the part where it exploded into Parabola. That's a great video.

Yup, that's their best. Got that one from sputnik7.

I thought the best live performance was The Grudge in NY. Awesome.

Dude3 03-15-2005 07:19 PM
Hey G_Mac07 a while ago you posted a band that sounded like tool, I downloaded that and just chucked them in a folder called: CoG. But now I have forgotten their actual name  So would you be able to inform me of there name?
If your talking about a thread I made a while ago, I said the sound was like Tool meets The Butterfly Effect. That bands name is Cog, and they are probably the best up and coming band in Australia right now (my opinion).

Here's "Third Eye Open - The String Tribute to Tool" doing The Patient

Dr. Jake Destructo 03-15-2005 07:44 PM

Mac, the link didn't work. Do you think you could upload some of Cog as well? They sound very interesting. Hell, anything with Tool influence sounds very interesting. :p

Kage 03-15-2005 07:47 PM

The link didn't work for me either :\ I was excited.

dUSK 03-15-2005 07:48 PM

bugger....

/goes to fix link

kombacha, I'll find my old thread, it has perma links in it. Remember it's not Tool though, it's an influence.

dUSK 03-15-2005 07:59 PM

I'm glad it's working. :thumb:

Here's the old Cog thread. Don't bump it, but use the links to get songs.

Hey, what's everybody's favorite T00L guitar riff?

Dried Muffin Remnants 03-15-2005 08:21 PM

End of Third Eye

Darkness 03-15-2005 08:23 PM

I just watched Ticks & Leeches live. It was pretty crazy... Maynard had to use that synthesizer on his voice though, and it sounded cool some parts but some other parts were kinda crappy. Oh well overall it was a great performance band wise.

Wow, I really enjoyed hearing that. I might pick up that CD if I find it cheap enough.
Hey, what's everybody's favorite T00L guitar riff?
The part at the Patient ("I must keep reminding myself of this")
Jimmy intro
Pushit intro.
The ending of Parabola.

I'm tempted to now, but there's too many CDs I need to buy first.

Dr. Jake Destructo 03-15-2005 08:36 PM

I'd have to say the chorus/delay riff in 'H' is fairly pristine.

The intro riff to Ænima is also pretty cool.

Kage 03-15-2005 08:49 PM

His riffing isn't necessarily my favorite part of what he does. I love the way he fills up space and his rhythmic driving, as well as the way he can build tension and release it with his playing, and he usually doesn't use more than one track for his guitar on the recordings. His textures are so unique as well because of the different chord spacings and Non-Chord tones he employs into his playing. Not to mention a good plethora of kickass riffs.

He's my favorite guitarist for his unique ability to construct songs employing so many different sounds, textures and a variety of stylings and movement on his parts in one song.

Sleeper 03-15-2005 09:14 PM

^^ Ive always noticed that aspect of his guitar playing, Its the space of sound he fills with great riffs.

Dr. Jake Destructo 03-15-2005 09:39 PM

G mac, that string Tribute version of The Patient is pretty sweet. GG on the upload. :p

Kage- Do you ever get on your msn?

Erm...I haven't in a long time. I'll start signing on a little more often though. Right now I have a paper I have to type up. :\

Dr. Jake Destructo 03-15-2005 09:56 PM

It's rave_guitarist, correct? Or something to that effect...

Kage 03-15-2005 09:58 PM

Yeah... at hotmail.com

EDIT: I'll probably be on sometime tomorow.

I thought Adam doubled tracked alot. I read somewhere that schism had like 5 guitars in it.

Kage 03-15-2005 10:29 PM

I read an interview where he said he doesn't use double tracking. There are some obvious places, such as at the end of Lateralus, but I don't think he doubles that much.

Darkness 03-15-2005 10:31 PM

Oh ok.. link to interview?

Dr. Jake Destructo 03-15-2005 11:12 PM

Most of Third Eye is double tracked. The first solo definitely is. It's way obvious, but just thought I'd point it out. :p I can't STAND the tone of the louder solo he's playing. I think it woulda been much cooler if they would have mixed the background solo higher than the other one. :-/ I am just kind of opposed to that solo, however, the second solo of Third Eye is euphoric. :D

hmm I don't know how that's possible. I can't think of a single Tool song that doesn't have more than one guitar track.

edit: If your talking about actual doubling the riff, Its not as much as other bands for sure but it's definately there.

From what I understand, he is a firm believer in "if you can't do it live by yourself, don't do it at all" which is an excellent way to go, i personally believe in that method, but he does use layer guitar as in third eye (as you already know), bottom, not so much lateralus, he plays along to Justin using a whammy which in my experiences proves to give the effect of more than one guitar. I feel that he does an excellent job of filling in space with either single notes or chord variations that just enforce his main riffs so much more than most bands could ever think of. my question is, do they produce there own music is or there someone from volcano giving them ideas? dont tell me that tool is not self produced, please.
