About math rock, would be you put Behold...The Arctopus in the same category as Yes? I don't think so.
Well, that was just an example. Of course not every band will fit into both genres, but I've never heard of the one you mentioned. I'm sure you could think of at least one other genre they could fall into? |

Well, sure you could call them tech. metal, but I'm not sure that's any different from math rock/metal. It's generally considered an offshoot of prog anyway though. What is usually described as math rock takes the unusual metres, complex rhythms and general strangeness of prog and gives it a nice big hit of the crack pipe. |

its not. |

That is basically my point. Why do you need both genres? Most bands could be called either. In this situation however, I guess that they are essentially diffrent names for the same genre, but do you see what I'm trying to say. I knew it had something to do with complex time signatures etc. Most "Jazz" metal could probably also be called "Tech" metal |

Yea, to an extent. One metal thing I don't understand is the difference between doom and drone doom. The doom I've heard sucks anyway so, meh. NP: Carcass-Crepitating Bowel Erosion |
Does anyone have ELP - Trilogy, and if so would they be willing to upload it? I was going to try and buy it but I couldn't find it anywhere and don't feel like waiting for an Amazon order. I'm also addicted to ELP so I need more. NOW.

Apparently, it's known as Jazz metal becuse of demanding instrumental parts, complex time signatures, etc. I thought hat you said at first, but it incorporates other elements of Jazz. |

Can you name a band? Metal is very influenced by classical guitar. I have hard time trying to think of how jazz guitar could be used in metal let alone horns and woodwinds. |

There is no influence of Jazz sounds, but the complexity and time signatures used, the fabulous musicians involved etc. are why it gets that name. That's just what I'm told. |

Its prog metal. strays from what other metal acts are doing. two specific genres names are combined that have elements of both genres. |

That's why I was trying to say that there was no need for this genre. At all. |

Atheist and Cynic != prog Atheist and Cynic = Tech Metal Great job on the Brainwashed review Robo. I really want to pick up that album, but the CD shop close by charges too much for it :( |
I prefer Mr. bungle The guitar work is much more complex

I've actually never heard anything by Mr. Bungle. |
Must we really discuss metal genres in the CR thread? I get lost so fast on such a topic.:(

I was listening to my local classic rock station and Nirvana came on . I didn't think the early 90s were considered "classic". Guess I'm getting old :-(
I was listening to my local classic rock station and Nirvana came on
Yeah, same with most of us here. I don't quite get it either. |
Our local classic rock station plays Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Blind Melon, DMB, RHCP, and a lot of other 90's bands.

looks like bus had a good night. he im'ed me last night with something like, "cant stop wont stop drunky drunky." i thought it was a good one. haha.

Ha, I got into my car last night, and Under The Bridge was halfway through on my classic rock station. I don't mind, 'cause that's a wicked song  I'm addicted to The Arcade Fire. |

i'm a patton fanboy. i have almost everything that involves him.
Do you have his Fantomas stuff (Spelt right?) and if so what's it like I've been wanting to pick it up but I heard it was sorta like screamo, and I'm not into screamo.
Must we really discuss metal genres in the CR thread? I get lost so fast on such a topic.:(
123, I actually just find it boring when you have to get so technical about it.
I'm addicted to The Arcade Fire.
I'm addicted to this live Pogues album I just got. Ugh... its horribley catchy. If Nirvana came on my station I would die. I HATE THEM! Also in other bad news my Oldies station isn't on the radio any more, its all staticy were it used to be I go to 106.7 and its all fuzzy. Its not the antenna/radio because I was in a car then tried again at home and then at a friends house. I'm pissed it better not be like cancelled or something, I ended up listening to Exile On Main Street while I sleep. Wasn't that bad I suppose. |
I'm not overly against Nirvana, they have some simple, catchy songs. My local Classic Rock station (before it shut down) used to play Nirvana and RHCP and U2 and other questionably "Classic Rock" bands, but the way they explained it was they were just playing all the greatest rock music of all time...so they included stuff from the 50's all the way up to the present date. Of course, I don't think Nirvana are in the same league as most of the Classic Rock bands we discuss in here...but it's nice to have some variation in the era and type of rock you are listening to.
I've been listening to a lot of Minutemen lately, playing a lot of bluegrass, and listening to a lot of friends' punk music. I don't have much Classic Rock related stuff to talk about. |
Do you have his Fantomas stuff (Spelt right?) and if so what's it like I've been wanting to pick it up but I heard it was sorta like screamo, and I'm not into screamo.
i have all of their stuff minus half of their self-titled. definitely not screamo. it's like avant-garde metal. i mean, dave lombardo drums for it. the self-titled is based off of comic books. their most recent, suspended animation, is based off of saturday morning cartoons. the songs sound like a twisted version of cartoon music. then they did director's cut which is movie themes with their own twist. delirium cordia is just weird and scary. single track. like an hour and a half long. |
Paradise and Lunch = 5/5 album.
We should have a listening party featuring that album. |
I got Matisyahu-Live at Stubb's today. The songs I've listened to are great.
On a completely unrelated note, is anyone watching the Colts vs. Steelers game? I can't take all this stress, and Polamolu got screwed out of that interception. |
