I wish Bill Ward from Black Sabbath got more recognition from both Rock fans and Metal fans. Not only is he the first "metal drummer," but he doesn't have anything close to the typical metal drumming style...he drums a lot more like Mitch Mitchell than Lars Ulrich, with that free/improvisational style.

PinkFreud 01-13-2006 05:33 PM

very true. ward is great. mike bordin idolizes him if that would influence any metal-heads. ha. peart should do well. i don't like him but i can see what h e's done for drumming.

I don't like what I've heard of Black Sabbath so I never really bothered to listen to any of their stuff closely. So I'm not nominating him.

I absolutely hate Rush, so I can't vote for Peart... even though I recognize his technical skill.

I did some nominations but I'm not done yet. Jim Gordon is a really underrated drummer who you should all nominate even though there's no way he'll get in.
there are some STUPID people in my rock music class. these girls sitting behind me didnt know what a record label was, who the rolling stones are, and when a clip of ray charles playing "i've got a woman," they said "THAT'S A KANYE SONG!!!!11" and they were serious. no lie.
Tsk tsk. Then again, I love both artists, hehe.

I don't really pay attention to drumming that much, but Moon and Baker are my two favorite drummers.

Also, I think Sufjan Stevens is excellent. Sort of like a less depressing Elliott Smith.

TheDMV 01-13-2006 06:28 PM

I wouldsn't be surprised if this Hellhammer character won. Lots of people have nom'd him.

I'll vote for Ward for sure. One listen to Rat Salad could convince many voters. I prefer that solo to Moby Dick. Also, Ian Paice's work on Deep Purple's Burn is marvelous. Hopefully it can sway some voters to him.

Check out arcturus and Age Silence, if your not a fan of growling you'll enjoy age of silence much more. I can send you some tomorrow if you want (Im leaving for a bonfire in a little bit)

Some guy just tryed to tell me creativity cant be proven.
If that were true then we would have no need for the word creativity
dead.

do you guys have any opinions on sufjan stevens? i like him a lot. i think he's a great songwriter and lyricist and shows a lot of potential.
I like some songs off of Illinois, but he's kind of boring and doesn't seem to have much going for him (IMO).

And knowing Illinois (the state), I feel can say that I am not satisfied with his representation of it. No songs about Al Capone, Bugs Moran or Dean O'Bannion! WTF!

MBS 01-13-2006 06:57 PM

Hey guys, I may not post for a week or two. It seems that my internet situation has deterioated into something much worse, and I can't update my newly installed Norton Anti-Virus. I don't want to be running around on the internet without an antivirus software.

Also, we are switching from Verizon DSL to Charter Cable, so it may take some time to get that done, so I can't post at all. I'll see you in 2 weeks.

jpj 01-13-2006 07:13 PM

I've heard so many great things about Sufjan Stevens. I'd really like to hear some of his stuff, but I don't even really know what I kind of music he plays.

I nominated Bill Ward. I've been a big Sabbath kick lately. His playing on the song Black Sabbath is nice, it really adds to the whole dark atmosphere that songs creates.

I just got the 3 disc Fillmore West Grateful Dead set. I can't wait to give it a listen, but right now I'm listening to Sabbath's s/t again.

MBS: I'll miss my little OC fag.

magicbus 01-13-2006 07:15 PM

Sufjan plays acoustic chill music. More complex than Jack Johnson. You might like it, might not. This is boring.

Glitterati 01-13-2006 07:16 PM

So long for now Mister Blue Sky. I'll remember you every time I'm rocking out to ELO.

He does folky stuff. I could send out Illinoise in a few days if some more people want it.

Woodstock 01-13-2006 07:28 PM

I wouldn't mind it.

I'm glad Google finally allowed you to download vids. I'm downloading a bunch of them to my iPod.

So far:
Pink Floyd Live 8
Ten Years After at Woodstock
The Dirty Mac
The Beatles on Celebrity Deathmatch

NP: Tubular Bells Pt. 2

jpj 01-13-2006 07:40 PM

Does anyone have My Bloody Valentine's album Loveless? I swear I remember seeing them on someone's last.fm. I had always just disregarded them as some whiny Alt/Indie band because of their name and this "punk" girl that worships Greenday who wears a MBV shirt, but they seem to be more than that.

Glitterati 01-13-2006 08:00 PM

I bought a MBV album t'other day (Isn't Anything) but I haven't listened to it yet.

PinkFreud 01-13-2006 08:04 PM

i have it. i used to confuse them with my chemical romance. they're like, the epitome of shoegaze. definitely alt/indie though. i'll try to get it up. the videos i downloaded from google dont work!

Glitterati 01-13-2006 08:23 PM

I Am The Walrus is such a fu'cking trippy song. It may be my all-time favorite Beatles song.

I love Bill Ward, definitly one of the best. I didn't bother to read through all eleven pages of the poll, but did anyone besides me nominate Cozzy Powell?

PinkFreud 01-13-2006 08:54 PM

i did. his work with rainbow and jeff beck is great.

robo2448 01-13-2006 09:03 PM

Anyone else besides me nominate Jim Gordon? He drummed for Derek and the Dominos and was a session man for a lot of guys like George Harrison. Good drummer. I have like 10 more drummers I need to nominate but I was in a rush so I couldn't do it before.

np- Any Road

I love Brainwashed so much. I think I'm going to review it sometime soon.

I wanted to avoid cliche answers from bands I don't like, ie Bonzo so I actually had a lot of trouble thinking of enough good drummers. How many do you have?

np: Turn on Your Love Light - GD (this guitar solo kicks ass)

PinkFreud 01-13-2006 09:10 PM

that's odd. i chose my nominees based on whether they're talented or not.

i was going to vote for gordon but i couldnt think of anything that would show his talent if someone challenged it and so i went with people who i could prove are deserving. which isn't to say gordon shouldnt be up there. i just didnt nominate him.

Broken Arrow 01-13-2006 09:12 PM

I nominated Ward because he is one of my favourite drummers.

I really want Mitch to go far in this poll, he mgiht possibily be my favourite drummer.

Oh yeah, I'm starting to get into Jeff Beck a little. I really like songs like "Come Dancing" and "Head for Backstage Pass" but I'm still abit shaky about the rest of Wired.

P.S.- Black Sabbath's s/t rules

EDIT- This looks pretty cool

I don't know if you were talking to me or not, but I meant that I couldn't think of 15 good ones. Sure, Bonham was talented, but eccentric, and sometimes erratic. If I want to hear an insane drummer like that, I'll take Moon.

I like Kind of Blue; it's his only work I own.

On a related note:

I asked in the Jazz recommendations thread, but I did not recieve an answer, so can anyone tell me what roughly the top 10 jazz albums are? I only have a couple.

robo2448 01-13-2006 09:24 PM

I want Live-Evil. That looks really good. I like jazz and could give you a list of my top 10 jazz albums but I'm kind of a jazz n00b and they're other guys who could give you a much more definitive list. It's all opinion, but Schyma and Krabsworth seem to be the biggest jazz fans here.

And I've decided to start reviewing Brainwashed because it's like the greatest album ever. Even though it's already been reviewed by someone. I probably won't finish it till tomorrow though.

I think it's impossible to say what the top 10 jazz albums are, because there are so many types of jazz. It depends on what kind of jazz you listen to.

I picked up GY!BE's Yanqui UXO today. It's pretty good.

I also picked up Jeff Beck Live at Sin-E today. It makes me orgasm.

he MIGHT only play on the jeff beck group. good stuff though.

edit: you mean jeff buckley, deus? yeah, it's great.

i couldn't list 10 of them but some that would be included would be:

miles davis - kind of blue
miles davis - bitches brew
john coltrane - a love supreme
john coltrane - giant steps
charles mingus - mingus ah um
dave brubeck - time out
eric dolphy - out to lunch
mahavishnu orchestra - inner mounting flame
weather report - heavy weather

others to but i dont know.

Okay, well here's the thing.

I asked my dad when we were getting cable. He said a month. And, it turns out my modem is slow, but fast enough to view the site. Just barely. So, I left Norton running, and after 6 long hours of downloading, it's updated and a firewall is up. So, I'm back. For now. Until I switch to cable. I want cable. :(

In other news, my review for Concert for George is almost done. :)

gmoneyguy 01-14-2006 12:20 AM

Cable will take like an hour at the most to install.

MBS 01-14-2006 12:25 AM
Cable will take like an hour at the most to install.
I know, but from the point from where we have to ship back our modem to Verizon and recieve the hardware required to have cable from Charter (we install everything ourselves) it may take a week or 2, depends.
