Ah the good old "I wouldn't join the military if it was the last option in the world" thought. It never fails me when I think of our current presidency.

I'd leave the country anyway. I'm a Marxist, and dislike the current system of government in America.

Meh, I can agree that Marxism isn't too bad.

My masculinity says yes, but my common sense says no.

Bartender 03-07-2005 06:29 AM

I don't think Marxism can be good or bad. Just right or wrong.
Actually, I'm hoping Bartender, Manuscript replica or i_am_jimmy_page win for their contribution this month.
Thanks, I suppose, though I'm at a bit of a loss as to what I've done particularly this month :-/

Also, this thread has far too much spam now.

That's subjective to the conditions and influences under which you've been raised.

It's a general discussion thread, it happens. It's a good thing to have in here though.

No, I mean the way I think of Marxism, it isn't a political theory of how things should be. It's just a theory of how things are (or, more accurately, will be).

EDIT: i.e. a meta-political theory, not a political theory.

Marxism and the Communist Manifesto are designed as guidelines to be used like any other blueprint. They don't state that this will undoubtedly come to pass, they just tell you how the system works, and give you an idea of how it can be achieved. Capitalism started out as nothing more than words on a piece of paper, and it was allowed to prosper. Why is it, that when even the smallest Socialist or communist country tries to get it's feet on the ground, America swoops in and bombs it into submission? Capitalism won't last forever.

LordDargon 03-07-2005 07:02 AM

Hey, you - if you had posted in the Titans thread, we might have let you stay.

Well, ok, we wouldn't, but it would have been fun to rip into an MoP fanboy.

When Marx was writing though, he wasn't writing with the immediate intention that this was what people should do. I mean, he clearly thought of socialism and, eventually, communism as a positive thing, and moving towards them a positive step, but he was writing to describe what would happen, in the natural evolution of human society. i.e. Capitalism gives way to socialism, which in turn gives way to communism.

I agree with you; capitalism won't last forever - but I don't think it will disappear the way modern communists (et al) would like it to. The reason it has lasted so far is because the leaders, the bourgeoisie if you like, have all read Marx. He said "amelioration or death", and they have done just that - ameliorated. "You want us to give you a minimum wage? Okay, to appease you, we will. Want us to farm our ship building labour (etc) to third world countries, so the former quarry and ship workers can now feel like they're middle class? Okay, we'll do that too". And they're still in power, aren't they?

I think the reason attempted communist and socialist societies have so far failed, is because they've tried; because I think Marx was right. We haven't yet had global capitalism, but we're moving towards it. Only when we get there, it won't be called capitalism any more; it'll be called socialism. Do you see what I mean?

Hey now, I thought I did post in that thread, in fact I'd swear on it, but that, like many of my recent posts, has been deleted by an unknown mod stalker. So far I've ruled out PDWAB, which still leaves far too many possibilities.

Besides, I changed my usertitle because the Titans Of Thrash one got old after two days. Put that in your elite pipe and smoke it.

I see your point, though there are holes in it, as I'm sure there are in my own. Global Capitalism isn't what I would classify as Socialism, because under Capitalism you have individual companies yielding their own profit from the manufacturing and distributing of goods and produce, where as, under Socialism only the government yields the profit, and then distributes a share of that profit in a country-wide "paycheck". Capitalism, even on an entirely global scale, is still based around who can make the biggest profit, and be the biggest buisnessman.

Bartender 03-07-2005 07:11 AM

Well yeah, my saying that global capitalism = socialism is a bit too much of a simplification. Hopefully you can see what I'm getting at, though.

Anyway, I've got a proctorial to go to, so I'll see you all later.

Captain Jack Sparrow 03-07-2005 07:12 AM
