I didn't make a link between wealth and access to telecommunication, you did. Poor doesn't not always mean wealth, it's just that monetary wealth gains access to those things easily. If you can access internet, the society you're in has enough structure that you're not deemed poor by my definition.
So, in your mind, someone living on the street, without an even remotely steady source of food or shelter, still wouldn't be considered poor so long as society has granted them free access to a computer? Either I'm misunderstanding or we have an extremely different definition of poverty. Mr. Ron:  |
Albany area. \m/
|
I drove through Albany once on my way to Boston. It seemed kind of boring, although I'd venture to guess that it isn't that much different from Buffalo.
|
Albany is kind of boring, but there are some cool places to go. The only time I've been to Buffalo is when there was around 2 feet of snow. Sort of sucked.
|
Haha, that could be just about anytime from September-May in Buffalo.
|
I connected flights in New York. I went outside for some fresh air, and it smelled HORRIBLE.

Hey Justin, can you up some Legion plox, I've been waiting, like, forever bro

Does Shane Italian still post here? Dude was hilarious back in the day.

Either I'm misunderstanding or we have an extremely different definition of poverty.
In my mind there's people who are poor in our [American/UK/US] society, but are unaware that there are support mechanisms they could engage that would assist them. But yes, there are poor people in our society. My earlier point though was to say anyone who is using the internet either, has access it to it through wealth and thus isn't poor, or they've seriously got their priorities wrong if they're poor but wasting their time on a forum instead of trying to better their situation. |
Gotcha. I definitely agree that anyone using a forum like this probably isn't poor enough to NEED to steal.

Mappy shut your ****ing mouth. Why don't you go troll another messageboard and conveniently reference how your brother got you into hardcore when you were 14 but you obviously are just a korn listening nu metal faggot who got into deathcore and decided to think that his backwards *** non-intellectual ignorant views on social stratification, race relations, and overall everyday life are somewhat THE definition of CORRECT. oh wait no you'll probably just call me a little kid or a hipster, but guess what i don't give a **** you are a worthless sack of **** and have the furthest thing possible from an actual clue about this because somehow you manage to live life and not shoot yourself in the ****ing head.
as for anyone else: i work two jobs that pay me jackshit, i go to community college off pell grant money and my own ****ing money made by me, my computer i bought in the fall last year when i had a scholarship on top of the pell grants that i once again used there. i have been poor enough to steal, for a three month period when i was 13 i did in fact not have an address and lived on the streets, and had to steal to eat. Maybe because i have actually experienced the hypothetical situations that moralist's propose, i have a different view on it than all you privileged sheltered ****ing housewhites. |
Stealing is stealing, regardless if you're ****ing rich or poor. I do not understand you guys. If you're poor, it's okay to steal? That's ridiculous.
Where do you draw the line? I'm not telling you, I'm asking you. |
there is no line, life is about survival and making sure you don't hate yourself in the process. harm no one is the only policy i live by, and i am not harming a soul when i steal from wal-mart.
|
i forgot how pleasant my childhood was and how much better it was than yours obviously. thx for the reminders babe!

Damn, Ben thanks for reminding me how ****ing rad/righteous you are. :smash:
You have no honor. Begging for change? Get the **** out.
Honor? Bum? Cool dude, didn't know you were the guardian of morality. I don't want a job. I get by fine without one. What I want in life can't be bought with money. I don't feel the need to comply with some of the demands of this society. Yes, I steal and frankly I don't give a **** about the companies I steal from at all and give myself a pat on the back for making even the smallest damage mark on mentioned companies. |
If you've got access to the internet you're not poor enough to be forced into the amoral situation of stealing to live.
Stealing to live isn't an amoral situation, but I don't think you meant that and this was probably just very poorly worded. It's also absurd to think that places that have the internet have strong enough social safety nets and that all of those poor people just don't know about them. That was probably just poorly worded as well (or so I hope). Although I don't want to turn this into a 'my childhood was worse' contest, I am inclined to agree with Ben when he presumes that a person with "cold" views on the poor probably came from a wealthier background than a person more willing to help them out. Then again, I know plenty of lower- to middle-class white people (most of my friends parents) who have been fooled into thinking that black people are taking all of the fruits of their labor and that Wall Street is on the side of hard-working Americans like them, or some crazy **** like that. |

I'm sorry I wasn't trying to make it into my childhood is worse thing, I felt that subject was pertinent to my point.
also martin: sounds good dude. i'm going to TRY to cruise around the area for a month or so but it may just end up being a couple weeks in portland at my aunt and uncle's. however if the latter is the case i'm still down to catch a bus or something and ride down into cali for a weekend or something. |

The thing is, you're NOT getting by fine without one. Look at what you're doing. Work sets you free and makes you a better person. Being industrious does a lot for you. Look. I don't hate you. You just piss me off because you have this "argrgrhrgrgh the world is out to get me, I live in the most prosperous country in the world but I don't want to legitimately work for any of it." Working sharpens your social skills, makes you a stronger person and not to mention gives you money for SS, medical, and pocket money. I'm guessing you're around 18-21. Just work at some little place for 3 days a week for 6 or 7 hours and you won't need to jump into trash cans or humiliate yourself by asking strangers for change. Oh no problem, I just wasn't willing to go into mine and I'm pretty sure if anyone else jumped in it would turn into a pissing contest. |

You are taking a product that wal-mart could have sold to make a profit, which goes to pay their employees. You are harming the business and the employees. Look, I hate Wal-mart too. Truly. Its nothing but trouble. I'm just looking at it from a purely disconnected and objective view. PS I've had nothing handed to me. I work two jobs right now and everything I own is by my own doing. If what I'm saying seems "classist", then it is just me pointing out the absurdity of people that complain that they're poor but don't even want to work, or some of the ridiculous anti-flag views out there. If you want something in life, you work for it. |

I've had experience with it and find it much more humiliating and harder than what I do at the moment for money. I don't want some fat douche bag manager of the store giving himself a power trip by ordering me around. Another reason I don't want to work is because I don't want to deal with bulls'hit customers who I would prefer spitting in their face. I also don't want to change my appearance to work, seeing as how if I would apply for a job I would have to cut part of my hair, etc. I don't ask (i definitely don't "beg") for money every day. It's not really humiliating at all considering its people I will most likely never see again. My parents paid for the computer, electricity, house and phone. And before I get **** about that, they would be paying for those things even if I didn't live with them. |
You are taking a product that wal-mart could have sold to make a profit, which goes to pay their employees. You are harming the business and the employees.
I'm almost positive that if nothing was stolen from Wal-Mart for a whole month, they would still pay their employees like **** and fire any of those who attempt to unionize. I'm also pretty sure that if twice as much was stolen from Wal-Mart in one month, they would still pay their employees like **** and fire any of those who attempt to unionize, except in this scenario they might install some more cameras into every store and fire some employees out of suspicion, then hire new people from the 17 percent of American that is now unemployed or underemployed. |
