I can't give any: Pitchfork refuses to say things blatantly, so I have no proof. It's just a guess, because they undoubtedly have listened to self-indulgent bands and recognized them as such. I'm going to agree with you on the over-indulgence thing. Somehow though they can't stand The Mars Volta because it's all over the place, but they absolutely love The Fiery Furnaces. (sup irony) I think the reviews are pretty random the more I think about it though. Most of the guys are good writers, but when they review albums, they go through a pretty weird process.

They use their patented formula for rating an album. See, there's two dart boards, "good" and "bad". If an album is good, they throw a dart to a board with numbers labeled from 8.5 to 10. The bad one works similar, only the numbers are labeled 0 to 4. You see, music is objective and therefore there's no mediocrity. Then, the actual review is influenced by how well their day is going.
